recently on the gram… - Ashley Ann Campbell

recently on the gram…

A few recent – well, somewhat recent – posts from instagram. Some are from my @underthesycamore account and some are from my @sycamorewell account. All are random thoughts by me 🙂

Apple Schmear. 10ish years ago the kids saw the family on the movie “Cheaper By The Dozen” play this game and it has been a yearly tradition for us too. Basically we pummel bad apples (from our trees) across the yard with rackets, nunchucks, and baseball bats. The chickens flock around the field and get to go to town on them. When we started the boys could barely swing a bat. Now they, well, they definitely can swing bats! His shirt says ‘My Life Rocks’….appropriate for a summer night of apple schmear.

I asked my daughter what she likes about her Crossfit Kids Class. The first thing she said was, “Everyone is so kind.” I feel the same way about my classes. It sure is good to be around encouraging, kind, and smiling people!

Our weekly Campbell 7 Friday Donut Dates have looked different lately – at least in location. Seasons change, life moves forward, and sometimes we get to cling to the ‘why’ of things while learning to embrace changes in the ‘how’. I’m thankful for this family of mine, for my grandma at my table, for the years we had with my grandpa, and for this tradition that brings generations together.

I thrive in the variety of movements and challenges of Crossfit, but every now and then I need the simplicity of running to clear my head. Running down Main Street in the early hours of the day reminds me of the scene in You’ve Got Mail – where the views of NYC in the early hours are so different from the hustle of the day. My Main St. is obviously not NYC, but the morning view is one of my favorites. Gardeners, delivery trucks, city crews, closed stores, empty sidewalks, and a sun rising – mornings are my favorite.

Pretty sure if they were standing straight, she’d officially be taller. Pretty sure I won’t be telling him that. {10 & 11 – 15 months apart}

Thankful: friends who bake with my kids and send them home inspired to attempt the same recipes on their own.

Quiche is in top of both of their favorite foods list, but their brothers feel quite the opposite. So naturally, the first night the other boys are together at camp these two teamed up for a quiche dinner. The dog stays near the cooking bacon!

This morning coach told the girls in class to get 20-35lb dumbbells for goblet squats and guys to get 40-50lbs ones. He’s always telling me to go heavier than I want to, so I grabbed at 35. A round in, he switched mine out for a 40. Another round, he came back and switched it to a 50. I’m pretty sure he walked around switching everyone’s dumbbells. I’ve never used a 50lb dumbbell for anything and definitely would not have picked it on my own. For the most part I’m pretty good at pushing myself, but I know I am stronger today than I was yesterday because of the people that raise the bar even higher for me. I’m so grateful for those people in my life – inside and outside the gym.

Growing up I often did adventurous stuff (sometimes dangerous) and would wait to tell my mom until AFTER I did it. There were enough broken bones, sprains, and dislocations I couldn’t avoid her knowing about (life of a gymnast) , so I hid the injuries and anything ‘dangerous’ I could. (Sorry Mom. Not really.) ?
?
Now that I am the mom, I figure if I do everything alongside my kids – just maybe they won’t follow in my footsteps. Instead of hiding their adventures – even the ones that are a bit dangerous, I hope they invite me to come along. We can wait to tell their Nana about it all after the fact when she can’t worry.
