From Latin to Spanish {Rosetta Stone} - Ashley Ann Campbell

From Latin to Spanish {Rosetta Stone}

When I was in high school I enrolled in Latin for the sole purpose of scoring higher on my SAT. It definitely worked for that purpose, but I also gained a tremendous understanding of how languages work. When I entered college I knew I wanted to study a language I could use in conversation on a regular basis in Oklahoma. Spanish was the obvious choice. My years of Latin created a strong foundation for me to pick up Spanish and parts of other languages.

Early in our homeschool journey my kids began learning basic Latin. As they advance in grades, their Latin studies grow in intensity. I see tremendous value in studying Latin, but I have also known that in many ways Latin was a stepping stone for them to study other languages.

After spending last summer living in China (last as in 2017 – it is still currently summer in my heart), Corbett developed a passion for learning to speak in other languages. He was blown away by the number of languages most everyone he met could speak. It was eye-opening for him to realize how multi-lingual most of the world is in comparison to America.

After studying Latin for several years, we both felt like he was ready to begin really studying another language. When it comes to being able to practice conversational language, Spanish is the obvious choice for our community. The options for learning Spanish were countless, but we wanted something he could do from home, for now.
As we began researching options, Rosetta Stone homeschool curriculum stood out. Corbett began it a couple months ago and I often have to remind him to only do one lesson a day. The first couple lessons caught him off guard because everything in entirely in Spanish – complete immersion. He quickly got the hang of it and is growing increasingly excited to practice what he is learning.

As a mom I am constantly watching for what sparks a desire to learn in my kids – what are the things they can’t get enough of? What makes them excited? What do they love learning?

As Corbett has begun Spanish through Rosetta Stone I’ve seen that spark ignite!
I asked him what his favorite aspect of the curriculum is and he said the option to have conversations with others. The group conversations are entirely optional and easy to monitor, which is important to me. He is able to do lessons and then participate in conversations where he is immersed in conversational Spanish.When he returned to our homeschool on-campus day, he discovered several of his classmates began Rosetta Stone Spanish this school year, as well. It was an unexpected surprise that makes the learning process more fun.

He is also already planning trips to Spanish speaking countries, which I’m pretty sure requires that he take his mom!
