Replichrome – Film for Lightroom - Ashley Ann Campbell

Replichrome – Film for Lightroom

I posted almost exactly two years ago that I used RadLab for my editing. I download photos from my camera to my computer, organized them in Lightroom, open them in Photoshop (individually) to edit in RadLab. I really like RadLab and had not taken the time to update my beta version of Lightroom. It was just one of those things that felt like too much to mess with at the time. RadLab has options for Lightroom, but I had the old version of Lightroom.

Anyway, I have been spending too much time editing pictures individually when I could edit them all at once in Lightroom. About a month ago I finally upgraded Lightroom. Wahoo…I’m no longer behind the times. I was contemplating getting the Totally Rad Presets for Lightroom (which I still might do) when I got an email from Totally Rad that they were releasing Replichrome for Lightroom. Replichrome consists of presets that mimic the effects of film. So…I sent an email back and am now the proud owner of Replichrome.

Here are my thoughts on it…it has a learning curve if you aren’t used to the film names. I am still trying to find my favorites and how the film style fits my style. The grain is also more noticeable (duh, it is mimicking film) and I don’t really want a lot of grain on all my images, so I reduce that part of the preset. I am still figuring out those two things, but I am a big fan. It has been fun playing with the different options and trying new ways to edit my pictures. I am still a fan of natural looking editing, but I also really like the different feel these presets give my photos.

Below are some before and after shots, using the presets at full strength so it gives you an idea of how they affect the image.

Also – my Canon 5d is biting the dust. The reds are so vibrant and highly saturated. It drives me crazy. In these pictures the ground was red, so that reflects back on the kids and makes matters even worse. Half the time I opt for my phone simply because my camera is not getting the shots it should. I can’t complain though. I’ve had it for 8 years and have used the life out of it. For the wear and tear it has received for 8 years, it is a beast of a camera. The beast needs some rest though.

I still have a lot of learning to do and a lot of playing around with the presets in my future before I even begin to get a handle on how they can really impact a photo. I’ve used Totally Rad products for years now and will always highly recommend them. So, if you notice something a little different about my pictures in the near future…it is just meaning learning new software and having fun in the process.
