this year new lego set…next year new stockings - Ashley Ann Campbell

this year new lego set…next year new stockings

Two weekdays in a row with no post…weird. I’m a creature of habit, so it kind made me feel ‘off’ – so odd am I. I had decided to take it slow with posts this week. Honestly, all I can think about is waiting for that I800A form to arrive so I can mail off our dossier. We took a little road trip to enjoy time with extended family. I left my cable to connect my camera to my computer, so I don’t have any regular pictures to share. If I did have that cable, you’d be seeing that FireCracker’s cowboy boots have been replaced. My dad picked out a pair of pink glitter TOMS for her and surprised her with them for Christmas. She’s in love.

Legos fill every nook and cranny of my life. I broke down and got my 5 year old his dream watch. It is the ugliest thing I have ever seen. He will wear it everyday for a good year I am sure. Grin and bear it Ashley…you made his year. I bought myself some Legos…a girl set that came with a camera, laptop, work table, coffee cup, ruler, craft drawers and an inspiration board…Legos just got a whole lot more fun.

I am quite possibly the world’s worst road trip partner. All four of my small kids do better in the car than I do. Something about being confined sitting down for so long makes me feel restless and all over blah. This particular trip Chris commented on what a good job I was doing. I told him to thank Pinterest. I spent a good 90minutes making an inspiration board for my “Someday Studio”  I’m dreaming of one day.

Do you remember these stockings I posted last week?

They are from Pottery Barn. I got my oldest son his and have added to them as we add kids. I went with Pottery Barn stockings because they are very traditional and I knew I could continue to add to them and they’d all coordinate. There is only one problem…they just aren’t me. They stand out in my living room like a sore thumb. Don’t get me wrong…they are beautiful and classy. I grew up with the same stocking all my life. In my head, it is a general rule that you don’t change out stockings. The one you get as a baby is the one you use your whole life. You MUST choose wisely and not go with a fad because stockings must stand the test of time.I was complaining to Chris about not liking the stockings. Why don’t you just get new ones? Shock. Horror. Change out stockings when are kids are not babies?! I told him you can’t just change out stockings, you have to keep them FOREVER. He didn’t understand the unspoken rule that to change out stockings was like crushing the very spirit of Christmas traditions.

Then, my friend Rachel reminded me that oh, yes, I can change out stockings. I do not have to be doomed to a life of hanging traditional stockings when I am just not a very traditional girl.

Every year Rachel posts pictures of her home decorated for the season. It is gorgeous and fresh each year. Her blog has been one of my very favorites since I first discovered blogs. In fact, Rachel was one of the first bloggers ever to link to my blog and encourage me as I began sharing in this space. She is a diy contributor on A Beautiful Mess and keeps making my mouth drop with the projects she has been coming up with lately. She is one of the few people I would be completely comfortable leaving my house and letting her redecorate it from top to bottom. She has been living in rental homes for several years and is proof that you don’t have to own a home for it to be beautiful and reflect the ones living in it.

Next year there will be new stockings hung in my home. I’m breaking tradition. It works for me…and I’m pretty sure at this point no one else in my home has an opinion on it! Well, if I get to mail off my dossier I’ll be back tomorrow because I won’t be able to contain my excitement. If not, I’ll probably be stalking my mailman or sulking in a corner somewhere…:)
