Hanging plate wall {my wonky version} - Ashley Ann Campbell

Hanging plate wall {my wonky version}

At some point over the last several weeks I decided to hang plates (that were previously above our fireplace) in out breakfast nook. I did not intend sharing about this project since it isn’t really done and it is a bit wonky. Most of my projects are wonky, so I never feel like I should share them here. I guess I think if you post a tutorial online it should be easy to follow and such. Mine are made up on the fly, so that isn’t the best for giving tips to others.

Anyway…several people on Instagram asked for more details. I took pictures of part of the process because it helps me visually see what I am doing to look at pictures. I don’t have many, but here are a couple.

Usually I just start hanging things and fill the holes if I mess up. This time I made templates for each of the plates, so I could be a little less on the fly and wonky about it all. After I made the templates, I taped them to the wall until I found a design I liked.

To hang the plates I primarily used Adhesive Plate Hangers. They are a little pricey, but I’ve tried other DIY versions and lost a couple plates in the past. I ended up adding two little plates (from the kitchen drawer) to fill some weird space. I didn’t have the adhesive discs for those, so I hot glued paper clips to the back. I WOULD not recommend this method for heavy or valued plates.

Most of my plates are from Anthropologie and a few are from thrift stores. I want to add a few more and wrap it over a bit on the wall with the window. Normally, I’d go to a thrift store and find some, but I can’t do that right now. Something to look forward to when things open up again.

I don’t have any good tips on a non-wonky plate wall, but Pinterest is full of design patterns and ideas! And for those now wondering – that is a quarantine cake from Laurannae Baking Co. We enjoyed it on my son’s 14th birthday and now I really want to buy another one. Maybe I will get myself one for Mother’s Day. Or Teacher Appreciation Day. Or both.
