preserving the dignity of others {photography}

In 2016 Corbett and I had the honor to travel to Ecuador with Compassion International to document and share the work they do with children and families there. Joining us on the trip as the team photographer was Mike Varel. For a week I watched Mike photograph the people we met with humility, respect, and grace. Mike captured photos that not only expressed the beauty of his subjects, but also honored them despite their difficult circumstances.

Over the years of teaching photography I have watched many students grow as photographers and develop a desire to use their new skills and gifts to serve and help others. There is a delicate dance when it comes to photography and respecting the dignity of others – especially those facing hardships. This topic is so important to me and I could think of no one better to share on it than Mike. I am incredibly grateful he is lending his voice and wisdom in a new SnapShop interview.
