Explore KY {Nolin Lake State Park}

We recently returned from a road trip to Kentucky. Our niece was getting married in eastern Kentucky, so it seemed like the perfect opportunity to visit another national park – Mammoth Cave. As part of our geography curriculum the kids have studied aspects of Mammoth Cave for several years. When looking to book a campsite, there were not a lot of options that worked for our preferences and travel dates, so we opted for outside the park at Nolin Lake State Park. It was a great decision!

When we arrived Saturday night there were quite a few campers, but by Sunday morning most had left. The campground was quiet, beautiful and we felt like the only visitors most of the time.

Well, us and the geese at the beach. One particular girl was very worried they might try to steal her mini muffins…
Hudson was cast as Micheal Banks in Mary Poppins Jr. this fall, which means we are hearing all the songs. All the time. Corbett was not so thrilled to be at the beach with a show tunes soundtrack.Years ago a friend with older brothers casually mentioned how she never played sports with her brothers growing up because they would comment about her ‘playing like a girl’ in a negative way. I tucked her words away and thought about them often after our oldest daughter was born. As she grew I became proactive and intentional with her brothers regarding their words and influence over her – especially when it came to playing sports with them. On the brink of turning 10 she’s got a pretty great spiral and the confidence to match…due in large part the the 3 older brothers whose words and actions have turned “You play like a girl” into a compliment around here.

Nolin Lake State Park had hiking trails (or biking if you have one), the lakefront, a basketball goal (with a beautiful view), and several campsites with lake views. I think the lake view sites are a few dollars more, but totally worth it. I am not sure what the park is like during the week or in the summer, but we sure enjoyed our time.

If you are considering as a place to stay while visiting Mammoth – it is pretty close when the Green River Ferry is open. It was closed on our visit, so it took us about 45 minutes to get to Mammoth going the long route. Just a heads up.

If we could have changed one thing – it would have been to bring an inflatable kayak. Several other campers were enjoying being out on the water and we all watched with longing eyes. We are now on the search for some affordable options. They’d be easy to carry in the trailer!
