Guacamole – the apprentice

My oldest daughter makes guacamole almost as much as she makes cookies – which is basically every other day. Good thing we have so many in our family and that the next door neighbors wander over to eat it too.

Her little sister wanted to learn to make it and has carefully watched the process over and over…until big sis told her it was time for her to try on her own.

She pulled up the step stool my grandpa made Corbett nearly 15 years ago. It didn’t quite give her enough leverage for juicing the lemon, so on the counter she went.

I offered to help, but she was determined to do it on her own. I love her determination – most days. I chopped the cilantro and onion for her. She did the rest. Once it was finished, she called her big sister over for approval. Her big sister declared it one of the best batches of guac she’s ever tasted, held up her hand for a high five, and made her little sister’s day. The approving high five and that grin are my favorite. The bowl lasted about 3 minutes.

Here is how we make our guacamole – for those wondering:

  • Avocado – mashed with a fork
  • Lemon – we use a LOT because we like it sour
  • Chopped cilantro
  • Chopped onion
  • Garlic salt
  • Pepper
  • Splash of salsa
