diy {vintage puzzle & utility shelf}
Despite our whole kitchen being a massive DIY, I got sidetracked over the weekend and tackled some smaller DIYs for the kitchen.
Years ago I purchased a vintage puzzle tin with pieces still inside. I figured it would have missing pieces, but I was hopeful that just maybe they would all be in the tin. I emptied the tin to use as a wooden spoon holder in the kitchen (it was the right height and I liked the colors). With the puzzle pieces dumped out, we discovered there were in fact missing pieces.
The puzzle was so pretty, so I decided to attempt to make new pieces. In case anyone ever attempts the same, this is how I did it:
- Traced out the missing sections on paper
- Traced the paper onto cardboard the same thickness as the puzzle
- Cut out the cardboard pieces
- Painted the new pieces to match the puzzle
MMMyMy pieces didn’t fit perfectly, but once they were painted you can’t really tell from a distance.
I thought I was done with the kitchen and then I saw a quick shelf tutorial that @ispydiy posted on instagram. I ended up tweaking almost every step to make it work for my kitchen and the supplies I had at home. Her shelf has a cute bracket from Ikea, but the closest Ikea is 4 hours away…so I went with a spindle from my garage.
The end result is a cute little shelf and a bit of a wonky puzzle greeting me next to the pantry door.
