Explore OK {Tulsa’s Gathering Place} - Ashley Ann Campbell

Explore OK {Tulsa’s Gathering Place}

In September 2018, Tulsans celebrated the opening of Gathering Place. I can’t begin to explain or describe this place. 100 acres along the Arkansas River – a privately funded park for the diverse communities of Tulsa to gather.

Adventure playgrounds, a boat house, a lodge, food trucks, restaurants, skate parks, sports courts, hiking trails, bike paths, gardens, and SO MUCH MORE – it is a natural setting, free to the public, encouraging exploration and learning. A gift to Tulsa – a gift to promote coming together in a place you can’t buy a ticket and everyone is welcome.

We took advantage of warm weather and headed out. Since we went on a school day, it was pretty empty. 3 hours was not nearly long enough. I’d recommend packing a lunch and staying all day…bring a book, too. There are plenty of places ideal to read or sit and strike up conversations with others!

We headed to one of the playgrounds first…then slowly meandered through other areas. These pictures do not begin to capture the extent of Tulsa’s Gathering Place. Whatever you see here – keep in mind it is just a tiny glimpse.

That is my mom in the swing (photo below)!He quickly realized he could get more push power by going up with the swing and pulling down. Always taking things up a notch!In the bottom level of the lodge you can get a gelato for $1.75 in a cone. The privately funded park began with a vision to gather Tulsans regardless of the demographics and things that often separate us. I love that there is even ice cream that is intentionally priced with hopes that as many visitors as possible can enjoy it.

If you are remotely near Tulsa, Gathering Place is just off several major highways and interstates. It is absolutely worth your time to visit. We were there in the slow hours, but I’ve heard that since it is so massive even in the busy hours it doesn’t feel cramped. There are also shuttle service available on the days that it is needed.
