art with kids {paint pouring}
Among the piles of boxes, kitchen gadgets, and displaced furniture there are still art supplies hiding out in our studio. While we have been so consumed with the addition project, I’ve skimped out on art projects. This week I finally decided to put down the gallon buckets of paint and pull out the acrylics. I’ve had the supplies to try pouring paint for a while and we finally made it happen.
- Acrylic Paint
- DecoArt Pouring Medium
- Canvas (I opted for 8×10 canvases, you could use anything though)
There are fantastic videos on the DecoArt website that show the steps for creating poured paint pieces. I will walk through the very basics.
1. Pour a bit of acrylic paint into a small container. Add pouring medium. Stir. The more pouring medium you add, the more ‘cells’. The less pouring medium, the less ‘cells’. We did about a 1:1 ratio.
2. After you mix up your colors, you then combine them into one container. Take an empty cup and slowly pour various colors into the cup. You don’t need to stir. Once you have all the colors you want, you slowly pour it onto your canvas. You can also hold the the canvas on the top of the cup and then flip it upside down (watch the DecoArt video to see that in action).
3. Rotate your canvas to spread the paint, making sure it covers the canvas. If it is having a hard time to get in the corners, you can tap the edge to get the paint to move into the corners.
These were so much fun to make! I opted for 8×10 canvases because the kids don’t have tons of wall space in their rooms. I want to try this with terra-cotta pots next, but I need to get more of the pouring medium.
I will note that I picked out the paint colors and set all the supplies out before my kids joined me. I tried to pick colors that would compliment each other. If you had a room in mind to hang the painting, you could pick your colors based on the colors of the room. Despite having the same color options, my crew’s paintings were all so unique.
