not really a ‘camp’ person - Ashley Ann Campbell

not really a ‘camp’ person

It has been a long time (maybe a decade or two) since I was a camp counselor. Years of babies and toddlers and elementary aged kids wiped me out. I’m not really a ‘camp’ person. You know the kind – the loud, extroverted, loves chanting cheers, super fun camp counselor kind. Chris is a camp guy. I’m a ‘put me alone on a lake shore to camp in a tent’ kind of girl.

And yet…I was a camp counselor for 2nd grade girls a couple of weeks ago.

Jessie (my co-leader) summed up our time like this:What she said about loving moms that label underwear – yes. A million times – yes!

It is easy for me to use “its not my thing” as an excuse to not do things. Of course, we shouldn’t say “yes” to everything. Anyone that knows me, knows I am really good at saying, “no.” Sometimes, I am a little too good at it.

Anyway – this ‘not a camp girl’ went to camp with 12 2nd grade girls and one incredible friend. The couple days at camp didn’t transform me into the cheery, chant-leading, fun counselor. It also didn’t turn me into a ‘camp girl’, but it did remind me how incredibly beautiful kids are and the significance of pouring into the next generation – outside of my own kids.

Our girls had moments of being moody, dramatic, messy and 100 versions of wonderful – just like every adult I know. Aside from the gift of getting to know those girls, I was given a chunk of time with a dear friend. I have a sweet spot for friends that make fun of me 😉If one camp wasn’t enough for this ‘not a camp girl’, I am headed to our church youth camp in a couple of weeks too. Every Sunday morning I get to co-lead a group of 8th grade girls. I figure if I really want to get to know them, the best way is a week of time away with them…and I do firmly sit in the ‘teenagers are awesome’ camp!
