SnapShop Kids! - Ashley Ann Campbell

SnapShop Kids!

So…are you looking for something for your kids to do this summer? How about an introduction to photography?!

It’s been nearly 10 years since I started teaching adults photography. When we started homeschooling, I had no idea I would have so much fun doing it. I’m not sure why it has taken me this long, but I finally connected a few dots….my love for photography and for teaching kids. I am so excited to announce I just finished my first SnapShop Kids course!

The past few weeks I’ve been connected to my computer writing the content. I’ll be honest, it was more fun writing for kids than it is for adults! It was also a ton of fun picking out pictures to use in the lessons.

My kids and our neighbors have been helping me test out the content and the daily practice assignments. I owe them all a big ice cream party for all their help!

SnapShop Kids is part of a regular SnapShop membership. While your kids are learning photography this summer, you can learn too! As an added bonus, throughout the kids course we link to related adult content, so you can dive deeper with your kids if you would like.

The course is set up as 30 short lessons. I thought some families might want to do it over a month, some might want 6 weeks worth of 5 lessons a week, and others would want to make it fit in with summer plans. The lessons each take about 5 minutes to read, but then there is a practice assignment each day. Like all SnapShop courses and lessons, it is self-paced.

My kids had so much fun practicing and learning together. (This picture was from a lesson on learning to observe your surroundings and anticipate moments – being prepared for what could happen.)

The content was written with 8-12 year olds in mind. However, older kids can certainly take the course. With a little help from a parent, kids younger than 8 can also participate. There isn’t an age limit – young or old – you know your kids best! (And, honestly, we think adults might like this course as much as kids).

You can visit the SnapShop Kids Table of Contents page for a complete list of the lessons included in the course. Kids will learn basic things like exposure, how to focus, and common composition rules. We go over the differences in lighting and how to capture fun things like movement and water. Students will take time to capture specific things related to their daily lives – like what they are thankful for and how to tell their story through photography. We also discuss respecting others with our cameras and ways to use photography as a gift for others. I encourage students to share what they are learning with their parents and I give prompts for family discussions related to photography.

My hope is that kids not only learn photography, but they have fun doing it with siblings, friends, and parents. I hope the course helps cultivate time together and provide meaningful discussions between kids and parents.
