Chinese New Year 2014
First, let’s just point out that I am a born and raised Okie. I’ve got a lot of Chinese friends, but celebrating Chinese New Year was not regularly celebrated holiday in my home until two years ago. I’ve learned so much about the holiday from friends, but our celebration is very much our celebration. It looks a little different each year and I am sure that will continue to be the case. We are learning. We are trying. Most importantly, we are celebrating with all our extended family.
Red envelopes filled with money – one of my kids’ favorite traditions.I was going to make traditional almond cookies, but that did not happen. Maybe next year. My younger son looked up how to write Happy Chinese New Year in characters. It isn’t perfect, but I love that he tried so hard and did so well!
Last year my mom made a snake costume in honor of it being the Year of the Snake. This year they created a horse costume to celebrate it being the Year of the Horse. Traditionally, there is a lion dance to celebrate Chinese New Year. I like that our tradition looks a little different and was the creative idea of my mom. We are grateful to have extended family excited to celebrate with us. Next year is the Year of the Sheep. My seven year old is already practicing his “BAAAA.”
Little One enjoyed some rice puddling and all the noise of the evening.
This is my very favorite picture of the night – my grandpa and daughter. My grandparents helped us build this studio space, so it is extra special to celebrate holidays in the space with them. And I just adore pictures of these two!
It was a great night!
