the beach in the fall {DSLR}

“I could never stay long enough on the shore;

the tang of the untainted, fresh, and free sea air

was like a cool, quieting thought.”

~ Helen Keller

“Like a cool, quieting thought,” – what a perfect way to describe an empty beach. It is why I miss it so much now. A cool, quieting thought.

The shoreline inspires thoughts, but it is also a simply breathtaking place to photograph. I couldn’t get enough of the vast empty backdrop the ocean provided. I like empty and open. I like margin and space. Yet, the very thing I like so much is so hard to come by these days. So, I soaked up all that wide open and I snapped away with my camera.

I shot the next two photos moments apart. The first shot was with the standard iPhone 5 camera. The second shot was with my DSLR. I edited the shots exactly the same using RadLab. Yes, I was standing in the ocean with my camera and iPhone. No they didn’t have water protection. Not smart, I’m sure. I like to live dangerously. Not really.

While I really like both shots, I prefer the DSLR version. Seeing the two photos side-by-side was a good reminder to me that though my phone captures great images, I prefer my DSLR. There are days I grab my phone to get a shot now, when a year ago I would have grabbed my DSLR. Seeing these shots reminded me why I don’t want to capture all our moments with my phone. Besides the quality of the images, I really just like the way my DSLR feels in my hands. I like the weight, the sound of the shutter, the control over the image.

So, here are just a few DSLR shots from last week…because I know you don’t really want to see all of our vacation!
