We’ve been gone {Bent’s Old Fort}
Good morning! I feel like I’ve been gone from here for a long time. While crafts were posting each day last week I was enjoying a vacation with my fam in Colorado. It was a great week, but it is always nice to be home too. In order to get to Colorado that meant a long drive in the car with small kids. Honestly, the boys do far better in the car than the two girls. I was once the worse road traveler in the family, now I come a close second to FireCracker.
In order to break the trip up a bit we looked up random locations on the route we were taking. I wanted to go to this castle, but Chris convinced the boys that running around Bent’s Old Fort, a reconstructed 1840s adobe fur trading post, would be much more fun. He was a bit sly in his tactics, but he convinced them and I lost. It worked out for the best. After being cooped in car for several hours they got to RUN…or maybe we made them run. Either way it worked.
It was pretty cool. We were there early on a weekday morning so we basically had the entire place to ourselves. History is so fascinating to me. To walk around the fort and imagine what happened there nearly two centuries ago – pretty incredible.
The military used the fort for a short time in 1846 during the war with Mexico. The kids enjoyed pretending they were soldiers defending the fort from bad guys. They may or may not have fired finger guns at other tourists entering the fort.
There was one area of shade on the walk back. I attempted a kid pic…I wish I had positioned them differently so the tree wasn’t directly behind them.
All that running around backfired on us a little bit. A couple hours down the road we stopped at Chilis for lunch. After about 10 minutes in a booth, I escorted these two to the car where the three of us ate animal crackers and oranges while Chris and the big boys got to enjoy lunch. Bummer on cranky toddlers in a restaurant. Bummer on eating cold food in the car.
Eventually we arrived in Colorado…..more tomorrow.
