Christmas Gifts {a dslr}

Besides orders being placed the most common email I am getting right now is “I want to get a camera for Christmas. What do you suggest?” So here goes…

I recommend a dslr over a point & shoot…even if you don’t know how to use a camera on anything but the automatic mode. The basics of photography are fairly easy to learn and a dslr opens the door for so much more than a point & shoot. They are bulky, but well worth it in my opinion. As far as specific dslr cameras go, I shoot with Canon so naturally I lean to Canon. Nikon is also a great brand. I personally would stick with one of those. I buy most of my equipment at BeachCamera.com, but there are tons of great credible online stores. Locally, I would recommend Camera Gallery at 71st & Memorial. They can really walk with you through what camera will fit your specific needs.

I recommend:

any of the Canon Rebel versions ($450-$800) - This would be my #1 recommendation for most people

Canon 20D, Canon 30D, Canon 40D, Canon 50D

Nikon D40, Nikon D60, Nikon D80, Nikon D90

You will also notice there are several different lens options. To explain it in the least technical way, here you go:

18-135mm: This is a zoom and a wide angle. Numbers below 50 allow for a wide angle.

f/4.0: In simplistic terms this is how blurry you can make your background. The smaller the number the blurrier the background. I only buy lenses that are f/2.8 or smaller.

You can always invest in the camera with the lens it comes with, learn photography beyond the Automatic mode and then invest in lenses that fit your personal needs. Hope that helps….just a little note to say I’ll be doing more teaching related things next year, but a dslr will be required :)

Canon is offering a rebate on certain models, you find that rebate HERE

Shane & Christi {engagement session…proposal}

I was thrilled and honored that Shane invited me along as he planned to propose to Christi. Halfway through the session he asked her to be his wife. It was BEAUTIFUL - oh yes, I was crying. It is clearly evident that they are crazy about each other. I wanted to get the proposal pics up so they could share with friends. I will post the rest of their session next week. Some of you might recognize his twin brother from a previous session. Congratulations Shane & Christi!

Christmas Cards & fall sessions

It is crazy to believe fall is nearly here…which means fall sessions with everyone wanting pictures for Christmas cards. If I have you down as reserving a fall slot you will be getting an email by Thursday evening with more details on what to do to schedule those sessions. If you do not get an email, you probably did not reserve a spot in time. There is a chance a few slots will open up, if so I will post those here. With all that said, click here for examples of the custom Christmas cards I am offering. If you have previously done a session and would like to order cards with your pictures, please email me and I will get you details on pricing.

If your initials are K.E. , M.S. or S.V. - I can’t find your email address, so shoot me an email at ashley@ashleyannphotography.com

my new camera

Here’s a few pictures with my new camera. I love it….

Shooting with the wide angle function on the trampoline

Shooting on the standard mode

Some from our fishing trip over the weekend…which the battery died because evidently I didn’t charge it long enough in my excitement to use the camera. I wish I had the 3rd picture in this sequence, but I jumped back screaming as Hudson began flinging the fish around while it hung off his finger. Maybe my sister will post that one on her blog.

And now for those of you still wondering what camera I got (funny how everyone assumes it is some big fancy thing)…it is the Canon PowerShot SD870 IS - a point and shoot camera! I love having something small I can tuck into the diaper bag or my purse. I hate being the mom that pulls out the massive camera at the playground, not to mention how hard it is to lug that thing around when I am by myself with 3 boys under the age of 4. So…I am joining the rest of you in the point & shoot world….but not giving up my dslr!

Matilda Jane Clothes {premiere party}

If you read my etsy post last week, you might have seen Heather’s comment about Matilda Jane clothes. They are super cute…Heather is a Trunk Keeper (you can only buy the clothes at trunk shows). She is hosting a Premiere party on Saturday August 23rd from 6pm-9pm. If you would like more details on the party or about hosting one email Heather at heathers@matildajaneclothing.com. You can see pictures of the clothes on their website, blog, and lots here.

If I had a girl {etsy dealers}

Did anyone see the men’s gymnastics team competition last night? It was great…they lost 2 of their leading team members - the Hamm brothers - and were written off with no chance to medal. They won the bronze. I am a huge Olympics fan (especially gymnastics) - I’m also hugely tired from being up so late watching!

I was looking for some boy stuff on etsy and found these instead. If I had a girl these are some the etsy sellers I would love to support….why aren’t boys clothes as fun?

Top Row: Rockerbaby, Pretty Me, LouandLee

Middle Row: Rocker Baby, LouandLee, Oh So Sassy, Portland Beanie Company,

Bottom Row: LouandLee, Earth Groovz, Penelope and Buster

***I did not take any of these photographs, you can visit the dealers etsy stores to find more information on the specific photographers they use if available…

eames side chair {Joz consignment}

Wow…it was a fast and furious weekend. I shot a beautiful wedding and worked on what seemed like a million sheets of iron on paper for a special project. I also updated my blog…an attempt to strike back at the spammers that seem to love to leave comments lately. I’ve wanted to share a few pictures of my fun new dining room chairs (well eventually they’ll make it to the dining room). My sister (who took the pic below) introduced me to Joz Consignment near 15th & Columbia in Tulsa. The first time I walked in there were 2 orange Eames chairs in the window…they are now in my house along with their other 2 matches. My sister has bought several great pieces of furniture there. If you are in the Tulsa area you really need to check it out, tell him I sent you!

***I apologize again for any of your comments that were deleted, I am pretty annoyed with this spam comment stuff….

Pretty Tags {sale going on}

I received an email yesterday that Pretty Tags is having a buy 3, get 1 free sale just in time for school. I received one of these as a gift for Everett’s diaper bag…much cuter than the sharpie on masking tape the other boys got. There are so many paper designs to choose from…great for backpacks, diaper bags, lunch sacks, etc.. They are only $4.00 each and are super cute as gift tags for other gifts…
