So I have a few questions for you….

Well, before I get to my questions…a few pictures to share….

I got to have some girlfriends over for a bit of crafting. I believe latte bowls are better for holding hot glue & mini chocolate bars than actual food. If this party were at my sister’s house, they would have been full of yummy things to eat. Speaking of my sister…here are more pictures I took of her family (including a RAD surprise pic)!

Our craft was not headbands, but there was a lot of fabric involved…and my friend Jamie. I convinced her to walk me through Cakies headband tutorial. I made one for me and one for FireCracker.

The photos of my girl & I were taking with my Android phone. I know…. a Mac addict…with an Android and not an iPhone. Let’s just say it has something to do with a great phone plan that doesn’t support iPhones. Such a shame. I seldom take pictures with my phone, but that will change soon. I had no idea there were apps for Androids! Anyway, cell phone pictures are a great example of how Photoshop actions come in handy. I processed the ones above using free actions from Pioneer Woman. She has lots of great freebies…among the other billion things she does seemingly perfectly!

A simple google search for “free photoshop actions” will bring up more resources for actions than you could probably ever use.

Okay, so now on to the question portion of this post. I need your help…

1. Chris and I are going to Chicago….neither of us have ever been there! I will be getting a Chicago dog, but what else is a must? What neighborhoods should we visit? Restaurants? Keep in mind, we are fans of local dives, ethnic food and hole in the wall spots….not fancy stuff. Shopping is not a priority for me.

2. I need a cute camera bag. For the first time in 7 years I am not carrying around diapers…that means I can’t wrap my camera in a diaper and throw it in my bag (yes, totally do that). So…what cute & functional camera bags are you guys using that you love?

3. I conned Shannon into doing a couple session with Chris and I….however, I am the worst at fashion stuff. Hello…jeans, tanktop & flip flops…I  love you. Any fashionable outfit or shop suggestions?

Just a reminder: The RadLab giveaway is still going on & the September SnapShop registration ends this week.

Stephaniecmc - Awe….congrats!!!! What an awesome way to announce an upcoming birth! Chicago is an awesome city to visit…not to mention eat your way through! Are you going to be downtown, Northside, Southside??

Katherine Bach - I saw an idea on pinterest http://pinterest.com/pin/115416328/ and I had to try it. It was a tutorial to make your own camera bag using a cute purse you can buy anywhere & sewing covers for foam inserts to protect your camera. I made one out of a cute faux leather ruffle bag I got at T.J. Maxx for like $25 and I love it! You should totally try it before you go spend hundreds of dollars on a fancy bag. :)

Katie @ Wildwood Creek - You must check out this post from Funky Junk Interiors. She’s featuring bags from Jeanne Oliver. There is also a similar camera bag. Love these bags–a bit funky and so cute.
http://funkyjunkinteriors.blogspot.com/2011/08/my-500-jeanne-oliver-windfall-and.html

Samantha S. - Never been to Chicago, but I *LOVE* my Jo Totes bag! Reasonably priced {as in, cheaper than an ephipany!} and fun colors. That being said, if you have time, there are TONS of tutorials floating around on how to convert a purse into a camera bag. Have fun!! ♥

Mallory @ R. Simple Life - You HAVE to get Chicago style pizza at Giordano’s. It’s a Chicago must. And it’s the best pizza ever. PS LOVE the announcement through your photos of your sister! Such a cute way to tell everyone!

Karla - Best Chicago dog is Gene and Jude’s in River Grove – it was recently voted number one dog in America by Rachel Ray’s magazine. Just don’t ask for ketchup!

Emily F - Ahhh!!!!! I am SOOOO EXCITED you are coming to CHICAGO!!!! I’ve lived here for the last 6 years and think it’s the BEST city in the U.S. I will think about what you HAVE to do throughout the day, and post again later. :)

AND CONGRATS on being an AUNT again!!! :)

Katie L - Definitely Chicago pizza – Giordanos is a good chain, but little places do it great too. Also, Garrett’s popcorn – If you like any forms of fancy popcorn (caramel, etc.) this place is great, though the line is often out the door and down the block a little ways (well worth the wait, though).

Laurie J - i LOVE chicago! Giorodanos pizza is a must (stuffed. it’s like no pizza you’ve ever had) it may not be a ‘hole in the wall’ or ‘ethnic’ place, but you just can’t return home w/out trying it! NAVY PIER. it’s fun and free and along Lake Michigan. depending on the day (poss just on wkends) they’ll have some vendors there who will sell all kinds of homemade goods. you won’t have a hard time finding ‘local eats’–they’re everywhere! ENJOY
<3

valerie - Welcome to Chicago! You can totally come to my house. :) The traditional Chicago fare of deepdish (I’m partial to Giordanos) or Italian Beef (Al’s is super-greasy and super-yummy) are fantastic. My mom is Thai and our favorite Thai restaurant in the city is “Siam Rice and Noodle” http://www.yelp.com/biz/siam-noodle-and-rice-chicago it’s on the North side and has great sticky rice. The Old Town Triangle (around North Ave & Wells) is full of interesting buildings/streets, and has the famous Second City comedy club. And don’t neglect to take a ride on the “L”!…which you could do if you were coming over to my place. :)

Sarah @ w30 - Oh fun! You’re going to love Chicago! Okay, it is pretty touristy, but Second City really is so much fun and lives up to the hype. And it’s so cool to look at their wall and see who got their start there – Bill Murray, Steve Carell, Stephen Colbert, John Candy…

Jess - Honestly girl, you’re not gonna make yourself a bag? Something seems wrong with this picture! ;) I was lucky enough to win a Jo Tote somewhere around a year ago. It’s cool and everything… but kind of bulky and a little too big & fancy for me. I have an old backpack-style, free-from-the-hospital diaper bag that I padded and covered with patches and pins. LOVE that old thing (but I guess it has emotional value for me too).

Lisa McCracken - Hi Ashley! Just started following your blog and I love it! In the pictures above (which are adorable, btw)….the words “YOU & ME” on the wall behind you…where did they come from? I’ve been looking for letters just like that (goldtonewith antiquing). I want to spell “HOME” and I cannot seem to locate anything like that. Can you tell me where I might find them? THANK YOU!!
And….have fun in Chicago! :)

Alicia - Definitely Chicago style pizza. Our favorite is Lou Malnati’s. Oh I could so go for a slice right now! Garret’s popcorn is another fave. The Chicago mix (while it sounds strange) is so good! Prepare to have orange fingers though. Portillo’s is great for a dog or burger. My sil recently turned 21 and went to the Signature Lounge at the top of the John Hancock for drinks with friends. She said the view was amazing, the best she’s seen of Chicago. Enjoy! Chicago is such a fun place.

valerie - Oh! I forgot to mention Artopolis in Greektown: http://artopolischicago.com/ they catered our wedding and I love them more than anyone should love a restaurant.

kari signe - As a Chicago suburb native, Giordanos pizza is a definite must for you to try. It is the standard for classic Chicago deep dish pizza (I always request it when I go visit my parents). Science and Industry Muesum is the best and way fun (even as an adult) plus a tourist must is the Bean. My friend has an awesome camera bag but I don’t remember who made it. I will find out for you.

Amanda - I’m a chicago-land ex-plant who recently honeymooned there. You are in for a treat. Everything about Chicago is awesome: food, service, entertainment. There is so much to do you could stay there years and never do it all. Here are a few ideas to get you started. Everyone says Giordano’s is good, but the truly best Chicago style pizza is Gino’s East. The chicago river architectural cruise is a great way to learn some of the history and layout of the city as well as well as to get some breathtaking views. Renting bikes at navy peir is totally worth it, there are great paved trails through the parks all the way down to museum drive along lake michigan. There are some great comedy bars in old town which makes for a fun evening. Pretty much everywhere is good. We had fun just going out with out a real plan and exploring. The food is all amazing, and it’s even better if you stay away from the franchises. Hope you have an amazing time!

Abigail - regarding fashion, I would say find or make an embellished or dressy tank top, pair it with cute jeans (boot cut perhaps?) and flats (or boots, depending when this photo session is), maybe a scarf (with tassels?), and you’re set! You don’t want to go _too_ far from the tank and flip flops because that is who you are and where you’re comfortable. Who would want a picture that didn’t show you dressed comfortably? You want to be yourself :-)

valerie - Ok, last thing…if you can go WAY north to the edge of the city, there is Little India on Devon which is like stepping into another world. Tons of great restaurants and sari shops, etc. There is an 80% off deal on restaurants.com right now for a bunch of places up there (and Giordanos) Rogers Park is the most diverse neighborhood in America, and Little India is a really cool part of that. Refugees from Iraq and other places pour into that corner of the city every day.

Michele V - I don’t know so much about the food in Chicago but sounds like a lot of others have pointed you in a good direction. If you have a chance to go to the Blue Man Group I believe Chicago is their hometown and their prices are way cheaper seeing them there rather than somewhere else. We went and were impressed. A great show they put on. And the shopping is great, their stores have a bigger selection than ours, unlike our store selections. I think their Old Navy store is like 3 or 4 floors….so take time for maybe a little shopping.

robyn - Well, I’ve never been to Chicago and I carry a point and shoot. But, I have been to the mall and you look seem like a perfect Fossil girl. We can always find something great and a lot of their things mix, match and layer really well. Have fun getting ready for your trip. (P.S., if you let the sales people help you, they really do have some good ideas!)

lindsey - Ashley – DesignSponge has a really great section on Chicago on their city page. They cover all the really unique shops in the city that you may like. As far as eating goes, I have a few friends that live in Chicago and frequent Skylark restaurant. They say it’s very local and delicious food. Look it up!

AnnMarie - I heard that Howl at the Moon is a great place to go if you like to go out at night. It’s a bar where there are piano battles. The crowd requests songs and there are dueling pianists that duke it out. Sounds like really good entertainment. I hear it gets pretty busy tho so go early.

Ranee - I would second giordano’s pizza as a must…just remember that the pieces are gigantic so you don’t need much to fill up! I need a camera bag, too, so I’m looking forward to reading the suggestions.

kali - our favorite spot to eat when we visit is this little restaurant called Chicago Pizza and Oven Grinder. http://www.chicagopizzaandovengrinder.com Their pizza pot pies are AMAZING! salad and mediterranean bread are a must there too! it’s in lincoln park-definitely local place-it’s hidden quite well. and so crazy-the same guys is there every night and if there’s a wait, they don’t put your name on a list…he just remembers the list in his head to seat you! cash only :-)

Sara - If you love a good burger (Um, seriously who doesn’t?) then go to Kuma’s Corner! Go to their website to their burger menu and prepare to drool….The burger combinations are CRAZY!
Have fun in Chicago! Your little girl is the cutest thing ever!
Xoxo,
Sara

http://www.kumascorner.com/

BriBedell - I might have to steal the baby announcement idea!!! As for Chicago you must go to Navy Pier & ride the ferris wheel! Then check out The Bean in millennium park! Taking a cab here and there is actually pretty affordable (I wouldn’t recommend driving it yourself parking is horrible!!) Gino’s East pizza is delicious! Authentic deep dish! Takes 45 minutes for it to cook!! but totally worth it! Also check out the glass balconies on the 103rd floor at the sears tower for some awesome pictures (and feel a little dare devilish). I don’t have a nice camera but I’ve heard good things about those Jo totes!

caroline tyler - 1. Pizza from Lou Malantis is a must. http://www.loumalnatis.com
2. Kelly Moore has a bunch of adorable camera bags! And they are all super functional as a camera bag and a purse/diaper bag at the same time! http://kellymoorebag.com/
3. Ann Taylor Loft has a bunch of cute tees and tops!

Lacey - I love my Ketti Bag from Etsy… they are hard to get, but worth it! They are all handmade so special, and cute!

Katrina - I’ve never been off the west coast but Gala went recently. Here’s here post: http://galadarling.com/article/chicago-an-international-playgirls-guide. I could give you some ideas.

I just got a camera bag from Jo Totes (http://jototes.com/) and I ABSOLUTELY love it. It’s a beautiful purse and very functional camera bag. Plenty of room for your camera, lenses and whatever else you put in your purse usually. I got a Rose in plum and I was amazed at how useful it is.

As for clothing, I love thrift shops. Elsie at A Beautiful Mess (http://abeautifulmess.typepad.com/) has been fully inspiring me lately. There are tons of cute ideas there.

Good luck and have fun!

Danielle - I use an Epiphanie bat (I have Ginger) and really love it. I can cram a TON into that bag. I also have been eyeing the Ketti bags but don’t have one . . . yet!

Epiphanie: http://epiphaniebags.com/#/shopginger/
Ketti: http://kettihandbags.com/

Christy - ooh camera bags I would recommend Jototes or Epiphanie bags
I have the (Jototes) Rose teal bag and love it. They are reasonably priced too.

farmgirl - Lucky you! Le Colonial is fantastic, 1920′s style French-Vietnamese, a little upscale (more casual than the photos) but definitely not stuffy at all. We took our daughter for her 13th birthday. http://www.lecolonialchicago.com/ If you don’t go there, at least visit the website to listen to the great song : )

http://msichicago.org/whats-here/exhibits/fairycastle/ is a must-see if not this time, some day with your daughter! Colleen Moore, a silent film star, had all the movie studio construction experts build a 12ft fairy castle, complete with running water and the most amazing miniature collection on the planet! She had a mini autograph album signed by all the luminaries of the day that is so valuable the museum keeps it locked in a private vault.

Have a wonderful trip!

lindsey - oh! and on fashion, I think you would look great in a loose floral-like sundress, belted (maybe try Francesca’s) chunky fun necklace, mid-length cardigan, and cowboy boots. Also, I really like your hair back in those multi headbands!

Farm 2 Market Photography - Just saw the greatest tutorial on Lil Blu Boo for turning a cute purse into a functional camera bag. Love PW’s free actions! They have helped me save money and make my pictures look a lot better. Have a great trip!

the whyte house - Have you not seen the tutorials on pinterest for diy camera bags? Oh, my…they’re wonderful. I’d check them out!!

Missy - No great answers for your questions. I’ve never been to Chicago (well a layover doesn’t really count…but I was headed to Tulsa!), I don’t have a camera bag myself, and my “fashion” comes from Target and Old Navy. I do, however, want to congratulate you on being diaper free. AWESOME!!! No please do a post on potty training. :)

Erin K Miller - HI Ashley,
My husband and I have visited Chicago three times for little vacations and you’re going to have a blast. Our favorite mode of transportation is the “L”. We usually park at the airport and then take the “L” to our hotel. If you do this, find a hotel close to a subway stop. We buy a CTA pass online before the trip and have it sent to us. You can buy daily passes for fairly cheap. We love walking around different neighborhoods. We love “Old Town.” Little Italy has a great restaurant that reminded me of old Italian mob movies. It’s called the Rosebud. The last time we were there, we tried to do the architectural tour because it was highly recommended but it was pretty pricey. If you go over the weekend, you can go early at 8am and get a cheaper fair. There are LOTS of touristy things to do: planetarium, Shedd Aquarium, Field Museum, the Bean in Millenium Park, Lincoln Park Zoo is free and fun to walk through.

Nicole - Yeah for Chicago! So much to do. I would second Gino’s East. Tapas at Café Ba-Ba-Reeba are fun as well. There is also an Argentine steak house called Tango Sur that is BYOB – kinda funky and romantic I guess – (my friend who used to live in Evanston raved about it). I use a Crumpler bag – not cute but I love it and it has room for me to toss a few extra things in it when I’m out with the fam. Fashion – no idea – I live in flip-flops and jeans. Sorry, not much help there!

megan - Definitely check out the Epiphanie camera bags. They are awesome! http://epiphaniebags.com/

Erica - If you are looking for a great local dive, I would HIGHLY recommend Pequod’s Pizza on Clybourn. I used to go to Giordono’s and Gino’s East, but Pequod’s was the best by far! Of course as a Cub fan, I say you must visit the friendly confines of Wrigley Field…if there’s a game when you are going. Also, the coolest thing I’ve ever done in Chicago was the architectural boat tour down the Chicago River. Even if you don’t want to do much shopping, you should walk down the Magnificent Mile on Michigan Ave. It’s amazing! You could make a pit stop and get some Garretts Popcorn! I LOVE Chicago!

Alicia - I’ve never been to chicago so I’m no help there…. and camera bags… well it depends on what exactly you are looking for… shootsac.com is great. I am in <3 with Kelly Moore bags ( kellymoorebag.com )… but they might be a little more purse styled than what you're looking for. As for what to wear… I personally just like to throw on a sundress and call it a day. and on J. Catherine photography blog she has these what to wears that she posts and even though it's for family coordination mostly you can get some inspiration for outfits even with JEANS.. that are FAB and will make you feel like a fashonista for sure!! http://networkedblogs.com/ltsAH

Betsy - You should totally visit a Paper Source store if you’ve never been to one. They are so inspiring! You can see the list of Chicago Paper Source stores here http://www.paper-source.com/cgi-bin/paper/locations/il_chicago_lincoln_park.html

cailan - I still don’t have a camera bag either – anticipating what you come up with. And hope you have some major fun together in Chicago!

Hollie - Lou Malnati’s is a great place to eat Chicago style pizza! My dad used to take me there, great memories. http://www.loumalnatis.com/

Sandy W - The Pancake House is awesome for breakfast!

Rhonda M. - Whenever we go to Chicago we make sure to eat at Ginos East. Gotta get some deep dish, Chicago style pizza for sure! And I also like valerie’s recommendation of Devon Street if you like Indian food. Yum! I think I’m going to need to take a trip up there now with all this talk of food.
Navy Pier is a fun visit too.

Minnesotamom - Giordano’s pizza on North Rush. My favorite place by FAR for Chicago-style pizza!
I don’t know if I want to share about the camera bag because there is a limited stock coming back up on Thursday, but it’s SO your style that I will. Jeanne Oliver Designs.
And for clothes, I think a cute modcloth dress with some jeans or leggings and boots would be adorable on you!

Minnesotamom - p.s. People will say Gino’s East is just as good, but DO NOT LISTEN (haha)! I’ve had both, and Giordano’s blows GE out of the water. ;)

Christi Smith - I would LOVE to see you come up with a DIY camera bag. I have been wanting to do this for myself too and I would imagine there are a LOT of women who could benefit from your ideas on this.

I haven’t ever been to Chicago, definitely on the to do list but I KNOW I want to do the architectural boat cruise. It’s a way to see most of the famous buildings in Chicago and some beautiful scenery to boot!

Katie Sellers - Congrats on your new niece or nephew!!

You will love Chicago! I surprised my husband with a trip there a few years ago for his 30th birthday. Some of the restaurants we did and loved: Adobo Grill they had the best table-side guacamole, I found a recipe for it online and now it is much requested at parties(awesome Mexican, more upscale)–followed by a comedy show right in the same neighborhood, it was a first for us but it is Second City is where all the greats from Saturday Night Live got their start. Check out Gino’s East for the classic Chicago pizza. We went to the Field Museum (more up my husband’s alley than the Art Institute — but I want to go there next trip). If you like wine we love Bin 36, it is a restaurant where they pair the wines with the menu items–really delicious! We still have never been to a Cubs game–it was rained out. We did go to the Lincoln Park Zoo though, it is a wonderful FREE zoo right in the middle of the city–really neat! And then it is just fun to walk the city–down by the lake, Michigan Ave (even if your not shopping) and Millennium Park. Oh, one last restaurant suggestion — Gibsons (again more upscale, couldn’t get a reservation the last time we went, it is a good steak place if that is something you like! Have a great time!
Katie

Jessica Lynette - Fun! We were JUST there a month ago on a family trip.
I posted about it here: http://www.jessicalynette.com/travel-2/day-in-chicago/ – we mainly just did the zoo {free} and the Navy Pier {also free, with lots to pay to do}.

Other then some hotdog vendors we didn’t hit up any exciting local food while in the city – really sad we missed out on that as it’s totally something we love doing too!

Chicago is a beautiful city – have fun!!

Jenny - How about a cute outfit from modcloth.com or shabby apple??? I love their stuff!!!

Emily B. - I’m with several others, I’m sure, when I say…go to Giordano’s!!! Best pizza ever. Also, if you have a chance, look up Molly’s Cupcakes–such a fun place. The Art Institute of Chicago is amazing, as is Jamba Juice (not exclusive to Chicago, but something I always look forward to when we go). There are some sweet thrifting places/all around awesome places in and around Wrigleyville. Have fun!

Rose - We love Chicago. I personally prefer Gino’s East over Giordanos for pizza. (Know that any Chicago-style pizza takes quite a while to bake so give yourself some extra time for dinner.) Star of Siam is a great Thai place and make sure you get the Chicago mix at Garrett’s Popcorn. The Museum of Science and Industry is a classic must and Millennium park is a fun spot to check out! The Tribune Tower has pieces of rock from all over the world built into the outside. It’s fun to check out! Buckingham Fountain has a fun evening ‘show’…oh and if the Cubs are in town you should definitely go to a game at Wrigley. A perfect place for photos of the skyline is between the Shedd Aquarium and the Adler Planetarium. There is street/meter parking along the road. Also, not sure when you’re going, but the Renegade Craft Fair is in Wicker Park Sept 10-11. Whew! Sorry for the long response! :)

Kirsten - Well, I’m out for ideas in Chicago. And my idea of dressing up is a clean pair of yoga pants. But I do LOVE my Epiphanie bag. I have a Lola and it is awesome! It is just big enough to carry my purse items, body with lens and 2 smaller and 1 larger lens. They have larger and smaller bags, but all are pretty darn cute.

Ryan - Kelly Moore has awesome camera bags but they’re pricey. I love this one: http://kellymoorebag.com/mens/moore-men-s-bag.html

But I guess the camera you’re putting in the bad wasn’t cheap, so we might as well spend a little to protect it and look cute. I’m a big fan of camera bags that don’t look like camera bags. If you’re out and about (especially on vacation in big cities), I think it’s smart not to advertise that you’re carrying around an expensive camera by having an obvious bag.

Kiera Chambers - just a comment on the fashion….be yourself…
you don’t want pictures that aren’t you…so if you’re a jeans and tank top girl just do that with some bling…maybe a tank with ruffles or extra jewelry, and some nice strappy sandals or blinged out flip flops…
don’t go and take a bunch of amazing pictures that aren’t YOU…

Joanna - I would agree with Garretts Popcorn…it is definitely worth the wait! (It was one of Oprah’s Favorites years ago) very very good.

Jeannette - I don’t know anything about Chicago! Congratulations to your sister – how exciting for them!! I have always wanted a sister – but it would be especially good if I had one as awesome as you!

Erin - Helllllllllllo – I’m a college student in Chicago and nearly jumped out of my seat when I read that you’re coming to Chicago! I’ve been following your blog for a few years now and never commented … but now that you’re coming TO CHICAGO … heck yes I needed to comment!!! So, here’s what you should check out – from the eyes of a college girl – Logan Square, Bucktown, and Wicker Park are all areas of Chicago with lots of character and lots of stuff to do … if you do some research online, I’m wiling to bet you’ll find some farmer’s markets/outdoor festivals/neat stuff going on in the next few weeks. Piece Brewery and PIzzeria is a great place in that neighborhood and their pizza is so great .. although not deep dish! Also… the lakefront path is beautiful and worth checking out – right by the water, great views, and lots of green space (for Chicago anyway). Also, if you wanted to come be my best friend I’d like that, too. OK GREAT!

Michelle - Hot Doug’s for the hot dog. It’s north of downtown but a quick cab ride. He makes, I believe, the sausages and hot dogs on site. On Fridays, the fries are fried in duck fat. Divine! There’s usually a line around the building, but it moves quickly. And, for a less expensive trip on the river, take a water taxi (picks up by the Wrigley Building) to China Town. I think it’s $6 for an all day pass. Also, Cozy Corner right by the California blue line stop is a yummy breakfast place. Hope you’re staying for about 2 weeks because we all have you going all over the place!

Christina - I love the “Acme Bowler” camera bag (Google that, the link is muuuuch to long). At least I love it when I don’t need all my gear. It is quite tiny. If you are trying to carry all your gear, it won’t work…as it is made for one slr. It is quite cute and the perfect size for the basics.

Suz McA - As a former Chicagoan, you MUST try deep-dish pizza (Gino’s East and Lou Malnati’s are faves). The architectural boat tour is always a hit for both tourists & locals. Of course, check out the tourist must-sees – including our favorite parks (Millennium, Grant & Lincoln), Navy Pier, and the Magnificent Mile (I rarely shopped there, but it’s fun to walk down Michigan Ave). There are also some cool suburbs close by & accessible by the L including my former hometown, Oak Park (in addition to a cute downtown with great restaurants, you can visit Frank Lloyd Wright’s home & studio as well as mosey through some really cool old neighborhoods where you’ll find other FLW homes along with other beautiful homes). I’d also add Evanston to your list…. home of Northwestern and just all around a beautiful place (also accessible via the L). You can get pretty much anywhere via public transportation so don’t waste money on cab fares and just pick up a CTA schedule. Have fun! Chicago is LOVELY this time of year!

Shannon Phillips - Go shopping for our shoot at H&M!

Suz McA - … other must-sees I forgot about but would second after now looking at the other comments – Museum of Science and Industry, the Sears Tower (now called the “Willis” tower), John Hancock Building, and DEFINITELY Wrigley Field if you are a baseball fan. Get bleacher seats and enjoy a Cubs game!

Nori R - I can only help with #2. I love my chocolate Betsy bag from Jo’s Totes. It holds a lot and is so stylish. Love the feel of the leather too… so soft!

Have a wonderful time!!! I’ll look forward to seeing the pics.

elisabeth (bovagoods) - jen from “i heart organizing” wrote this great post on her awesome camera bag. she really loves this thing and i can see why!

http://iheartorganizing.blogspot.com/2011/02/february-challenge-project-photography_10.html

Pix - I lust over Epiphanie bags. http://www.epiphaniebags.com Never splurged and bought one though. The John Hancock tower is fun. Have a drink up there but dinner isn’t that great. Navy Pier is fun. Of course you have to go to The Bean. Super fun to photograph.

Madaline Meatte - I just got back from Chicago last weekend!!! We had a blast. Mr. Beefs…hole in the wall place, delicious italian beef. bring cash for that. you must get garrett’s popcorn…the chicago mix of course. and go to Francesa’s for dinner in Little Italy! (http://www.miafrancesca.com/) Seriously the best italian I’ve ever had. Its not touristy at all! Oh and like the others said…go to Gino’s East. Thanks…now I want Deep Dish Pizza and Popcorn now…. Have fun!!!!

Krisi - Ashley,
You need to visit the Chicago suburb of Oak Park. It is full of book shops, coffee and green grass parks. It also has TONS of little restaurants and an ice cream parlor. OH…and best of all the houses are at least a century old and so gorgeous!

Second, if you have an afternoon, take the L to St. Charles or Geneva (an hour outside of the city) and rent bikes on the river. There are also tons of thrify boutiques to explore.

This is my advice.

Andrea - We love to visit Chicago!

You must try either Giordano’s or Ginos East. I love both of these pizza places! Visiting the Navy Pier is fun too.

Have a great time!

Jenny - GO TO ED DEBEVICKS!!! (Hope I spelt that right…) It is a blast! The servers aim to be rude, so it makes for a very entertaining meal :) Also, Navy Pier. So fun. The Shedd Aquarium is huge! And so fun. And Six Flags is 30 min out if you want to have some amusement park fun with your hubs.

Another great way to find some new little places and whatnot is going on livingsocial.com or groupon.com or any of those deal finding spots. A lot of new places put up vouchers on there to get out there and be seen. So you save money on stuff, and find new places! :)

Mallory M - Oh how I miss Chicago! My favorites are Wrigleyville and Bucktown. Bucktown is more artistic. And you have to go to Portillo’s for an Italian Beef. Yum! I love Giordano’s but also Gino’s is awesome. The walls are covered with people writing their names and what not. There are food tours you could do. I was suppose to do one but ended up being too sick to walk, let alone eat. And if you are in museums, I recommend the Museum of Science and Industry. That’s my favorite one. I personally think Navy Pier is a waste. Unless you feel like spending lots of money on rides.

Alycia - Ashley, you NEED to go to this amazingly yummy pizza place called Giordano’s. Its right across from the Sear’s Tower. Its been on Diners, Drive-In’s and Dives and my boyfriend raves about that place from when he lived in Chicago. The pizza is delicious!!

Leslie - I can’t help with 1 or 2, but 3 I can offer an opinion… denim always seems to photograph well, and you can add pops of color with accessories. There are LOTS of denim chambray options in stores right now…lots of cute little simple chambray dresses.

Taryn Smith - Hi Ashley!
I grew up outside of Chicago, Portillo’s has the best hot dogs you will ever eat. Everyone tries to “copy” the Chicago hot dog and they NEVER compare to Portillo’s. They also have Italian beef that my husband always gets. Everyone I know who ever goes back to Chicago goes to Portillos. They are located evrywhere in the Chicago area. Have fun! Taryn

Hannah B - I’ve always wanted to go to Chicago just to spend every night at Second City shows and maybe take some improv classes. That’s my kind of thing. But then, I saw this special on the food network which made we want to go to Chicago even more….it’s a place called “iCream” and you get to make your very own ice cream from scratch! You choose the milk, the flavor and the color…so you could have chocolate ice cream that’s green and made with soy. Then, during the winter they sell custard and you can create yourself.

Two reasons to go to Chicago: Second City & iCream! :)

Hope you have a fun trip!! :)

Rachel S. - I live in Chicago…it is a BEAUTIFUL place this time of year! Some of our favorite foods comes from M Burger (several locations downtown), Lou Malnati’s (great deep dish pizza and amazing cookie dessert pizza), and Forever Yogurt for self-serve frozen yogurt. Mmm. Portillo’s (in the Gold Coast area) has great dogs, burgers, and cake shakes. As for ‘hoods to visit, you can’t really go wrong in Chicago because there are a lot of fun ones. Navy Pier is cool if you’re from out of town. The Lincoln Park area has a free zoo and a lot of beautiful homes by the lake. Wicker Park has a really fun corridor along Milwaukee Ave. and North Ave. with all kinds of shops and people. Really, it’s such a fun city!

Hannah B - Oops…I forgot to give you the link to iCream (http://www.icreamcafe.com/)

Krista Lund - so jealous! my hubby and i also want to visit chicago! i have my eye on a kelly mooro b hobo bag:
http://kellymoorebag.com/womens/kelly-moore-b-hobo-bag-1.html

Sherry - I don’t know if anyone mentioned this already or not (I didn’t read the comments), but I use a Jo Totes bag and love it! It’s so functional and cute at the same time. It comes in many color options. Here’s their site: http://www.jototes.com

Kate @ Songs Kate Sang - I love my Jeanne Oliver bag… http://www.jeanneoliverdesigns.com/item_30/Ellison-Camera-Bag.htm

It is so cute and has been a lifesaver for me!

Chicago… I LOVE that town! My bestie grew up in Chicago. If I could tell you one thing to do… it would be to find an Ann Slather for breakfast and eat there! Mmmm….

Have a wonderful, wonderful trip!

Marianna - I’ve been wanting a hobo bag from Kelly Moore – http://kellymoorebag.com/womens/bhobo.html

Sara Hasstedt - I love the look of the Kelly Moore bags and I’ve heard great things about them. I’m still saving my beans to buy one. :)

Kate @ Songs Kate Sang - OH, (Sorry for a 2nd comment!) Yes, Germantown is so fun to walk around. and the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum…

giozi - I love the second on the left. Is adorable

ruth@gracelaced - So, I’ve not been to Chicago, but I know if we were going, we’d have to stop at LegoLand. Without kids, I’d be heading to the Art museum. And as for camera gear: you could make your own insert since you are *sooooo* good on the sewing machine :) , or neoprene case, or these bags: http://www.gracelaced.com/2011/05/19/talkin-photography-gear/
Outfit for photo shoot: You should wear a dress (!!) from Shabby Apple. :)

Jordan - We lived in Chicago for a couple years, so I’m going to emphatically second several suggestions… We LOVE Greek town, lots of good restaurants, so go with any previous suggestion, but really fun for culture and fabulous food. Giordanos or ginos east just to say you ate Chicago style pizza. The science and industry museum for the dollhouse exhibit among many other cool things. The art institute is free on certain days/evenings so look it up online before you go. And the architectural tour is a must!! You learn and see so much about the city in a short amount of time. So great for an artist! Have a wonderful time!

Cassie - Ok, my husband & I just moved back to our hometown after living in Chicago the last 4 years and I miss the food SO much!

1. Go to Greek town! Greek Islands on Halsted. They have the BEST Avgolemono soup. And free valet parking, too.

2. If you’re up for it, Indian Garden on Ontario (really close to Michigan Ave) has the best Indian food I’ve ever had in my life. When my dad (total foodie) came to visit, that’s the only place he ever wanted to eat. And the West Egg is just around the corner, awesome breakfast food.

3. If you want some late night fun, go to the Greenmill Lounge. It’s a jazz lounge that used to be own by Al Capone. All kinds of famous jazz singers performed there in the 20′s-40′s. They have awesome jazz music and poetry readings. It’s in Uptown.

4. For awesome locally-brewed coffee, go to Metropolis in Edgewater. The best.

5. Scoozi is a fun Italian restaurant in the River North neighborhood, but if you can make the treck down to Littly Italy you can’t go wrong. It’s all delicious.

Have fun! We’re loving being close to our family, but we definitely miss the city a lot.

You would love all the boutiques in Wicker Park & Gold Coast, too. Awesome shopping.

Anna Joy - I envy these camera bags:
http://kettihandbags.com/
I want one.

I’m not good at giving fashion tips since I’m a jeans, tshirt, and flip flops/Toms girl. Mehhh.

And I’m so happy for Lesley. SO HAPPY!!!

Danielle - jo totes camera bag!!!! all da way.

Cassie - P.S. If you’re taking the kiddos, the Lincoln Park Zoo is free and AWESOME. You can get a city pass for all the museums, too. The Shedd Aquarium is amazing, and I think they still have the jellyfish exhibit, which is hands down one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen. I’ll second that the architectural boat tour is really interesting, and a fun way to see the city (probably not with kiddos though).

Kendra F - 1. I’ve never been to Chicago either so I’m no help

2. They’re pricey, yet so so pretty: http://kellymoorebag.com/
Or you can make your own insert and than use that in any bag.
http://vanillaandlace.blogspot.com/2011/01/diy-camera-pursebag.html

3. I like searching around Pinterest and Polyvore for outfit ideas. Just search “clothes” or “outfit”

jenn - Jo totes has the best camera bags! A must have for sure!

Sarah - My husband and I believe Lou Malnatis Pizzeria is a must when in Chicago. Best. Deep-dish. Ever!

Denise - I recently went to Chicago for the fist time and ate at Pizzeria Due. We just sat at the bar the whole time and split the *most amazing* deep dish pizza. *droooooool* Have fun!

Sandy - I have been using a Crumpler bag ever since I went on a trip to Europe. I love it because it is super sturdy, but it doesn’t necessarily scream camera bag! I am pretty sure mine was a 5 million dollar home. Big enough for the camera and two lenses.

Jens - You *must* go to Devon Street!! It’s got a bunch of Indian and Pakistani restaurants and shops. It’s like a Little India. We ate our way up and down that street and had some of the best food of our lives.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Devon_Avenue_%28Chicago%29

Emily Peck - I second Giordano’s for pizza….i got to Chicago every year on businesses and this is where we go….it’s UH-MAZING. As for camera bags, I’d love to know what suggestions you get! Nicole just featured one yesterday: http://makingitlovely.com/2011/08/30/brooklyn-camera-bag-giveaway/ {she also lives in chicago area so maybe has some tips?} Clothes…HMM…I’m like you and it’s HARD! I really love everything on Ruche (http://www.shopruche.com/) and it’s affordable!

Sunny - I love my camera bag from Jo Totes. http://jototes.com/handbags (I have Rose in Moss. Its big, so it holds my camera and four lenses plus accessories, but the other bags are a little smaller and just as functional!) I’ve only heard good things about the bags. They are a little bit pricey but good quality, functional and very cute! In Chicago, you should definitely go to Millenium Park and see the Bean (touristy but so cool!), Giordano’s Chicago style pizza is a must and the Art Institute is beautiful.

Maggie @ Midwestern {Sewing} Girl - Love those photos, Ashley! I think pretty much any food you get in Chicago will be delicious…seriously. You have to try the pizza, but you already know that. Try to hit Lincoln Park, Bucktown, of course the Mag Mile…
You’ll have a terrific time!

Joanie - Chicago is one of the best places for “eats” in the country. All the locals have a favorite pizza place, so I would say try Giordano’s or Gino’s East (I prefer Giordano’s, but the cheese is practically a choking hazard. It’s amazing. My husband prefers Gino’s East because they use a cornmeal crust like you can get nowhere else.).

Hot dogs are taken quite seriously here. Portillo’s is a local chain that grew from hot dog cart, but there are lots of little stands around the city. I’d just eat at the ones who have Vienna Beef on the sign somewhere. Also, for a true Chicago dog, the local wisdom is that you don’t put ketchup on it. There wa even an article about it: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/craig-goldwyn/ketchup-on-hot-dogs_b_928338.html

Take an architectural boat cruise. You can drift by the skyline and have people tell you all about the city. I absolutely love this place and hope you have a great time.

Rachael - As soon as you said “RAD surprise” I KNEW it :) Congrats to the families :)

Liesel - My husband got me an Epiphanie bag for Christmas last year. I LOVE it and get tons of compliments. I love that the interior sections are velcroed in so they can be adjusted or taken out when you aren’t carrying your camera. I have one that has space for my laptop. I’d love to have a smaller one for just my camera!

stephany - I love my Kelly Moore bag!
http://kellymoorebag.com

Mary - Giordano’s Pizza is my fave. I’m not a deep dish fan, but still love their thin crust! Always stop there when I’m in Chicago. Navy Pier is fun and I love the aquarium.

Jill C. - I have the jo totes bag–with the flower on it. I love it. I get stopped all the time with people asking me where i bought my purse.

Emily - I happen to work in the apparel industry and feel like people are always asking me “fashiony” type questions. My best fashion advice is to buy basic clothing. And dress it up with accessories! I love find accessories at Forever 21 (which is also a fun place to shop if you can fit into their sizes) as well as H&M. A really fun necklace and bracelet can dress up the most basic outfit. Wish I lived closer so I could “style” you! Good luck!

Gina - Giordano’s for deep dish pizza…you have to have it while in Chicago!! Uncommon Grounds for breakfast (I think it is in the same neighborhood as Wrigley field…or at least it wasn’t too far of a walk from there!), this place has amazing breakfast and is all local organic! Garret’s popcorn, yum!

Natalie@TheShadyAcre - After years of wrapping my camera in socks or cramming it into a purse, I found an Epiphanie bag (http://epiphaniebags.com/) that I really like. Kelly Moore has cute bags, too, but none of hers had a zippered top when I was looking. I know she’s introduced more styles, so check hers out, too.

Brittany - If you are looking for some Chicago fun, head to the Green Mill in Uptown. It is a vintage looking jazz lounge north of Wrigleyville. Lincoln Park and Wicker Park have some pretty great, one of a kind boutique shopping! Also in Lakeview, go grab some amazing, healthy frozen yogurt at Red Mango…you won’t regret it! As far as ‘musts’, going to a beach or walking on the Lake Shore path is a Chicago pleaser. If you like Mexican, head up to Wrigleyville for El Mariachi on North Halstead. One more addition–non-chain, amazingly cute coffee shop very close to that, go to Corona’s on Irving Park Rd and Fremont, only a block west. YUM! Hope you enjoy Chicago!

heather - is it weird that i find it strangely comforting that you are like me, a mac addict with an android? we have the same sitch, so there will be not be an iphone in my near future. i use the vignette app and i LOVE it. lots of fun options. i think it was $4.99?

Meg G. - Definitely try and get into some of the neighborhoods in the city – It’s less touristy and you get a better feel for the city. Bucktown, Old Town, Wrigelyville. Plus that’s usually where you find some of the best small neighboorhood shops and eateries. Cafe 28 is one of my favorite restaurants in the city up on the northside – it’s cuban/mexican fare and is amazing. If it’s nice out I would do the architectural boat tour down the river. Great brunch place is Southport Grocery & Cafe – everything on the menu is delicious. It’s small so try and get there early to miss the line. I really hope you guys have a great time in our city!

Jess - Congrats on becoming an Aunt again!
Can’t help with the camera bag as I am the opposite of you and just beginning my diaper bag days. Trying to find a solution to taking the camera along (other than wrapped in a diaper;).

CHICAGO: We live across the street from the Lincoln Park Zoo and I’ve been in the city for 13 years…DEEP DISH: Lou Malnati’s, Uno and Due are the best. Malnati’s has multiple locations and just opened a new one in the the Gold Coast (we actually call the exact location the “Viagra Triangle.” DOGS: Hot Doug’s is the best! But, out of the way and not a “quick” cab ride. If you’re up for the trek DO IT and you won’t regret it. It’s cash only and check their website to make sure Doug isn’t on vacation. STEAKS: My fav is the Chop House. Gene & Georgetti’s is good too. SCENE-Y: The Roof Bar at the Wit hotel, Sunda sushi/asian fusion, The Girl & the Goat Top Chef Stephanie Izard’s place (so good and the bar is 1st come 1st serve if you can’t get a res). Castaways at North Avenue Beach is just fun. SITES: Millennium Park is a fav of locals and tourists alike. Second City is in Old Town and on cute Wells Street w/boutiques, bars, restaurants Adobo & Topo Gigio…Zanies Comedy Club is also there and good for Stand Up. The Wendella Architectural Tour is awesome. Bucktown/Wicker Park, Lincoln Park/Old Town & Ravenswood/Lincoln Square are all really fun neighborhoods away from the tourist zone. Great little boutiques in all those neighborhoods. Also, the showrooms on the 1st floor of the Merchandise Mart are open to the public and you can look at all the high-end kitchen and bath designs…really fun, but ask before taking pics. Art Institute is great and the Modern Wing is so cool. Look also to see if there are any street festivals. Good Shopping everywhere. Get into the neighborhoods…those are what really make Chicago Chicago. Our fav’s: Malnati’s for deep dish (all over), Spacca Napoli wood fired italian style pizza (Ravenswood), Lula (Logan Square) for brunch or dinner AMAZING, Topo Gigio (Old Town) is solid Italian and the have a good patio. Sorry for the novel:)

Cherron - I think you would totally dig my friend Ketti’s camera bags!! http://kettihandbags.com/collections/all She restocks every Monday, but they go fast! :)

tae - CHICAGO!! my birthplace :) i love casual places, too and I would say that Chicago has really great breakfast/brunch joints. the iconic “Ann Sather Restaurant” (http://annsather.com/Restaraunts%20Pages/Index_Restaurants.html) for the amazing cinnamon rolls; “Toast” (http://www.toast-chicago.com/) – a quirky cute place for brunch and the veggie eggs benedict is delicious!; and then “Orange” (http://www.orangerestaurantchicago.com/Main.html) – not the greatest website, but amazing food! i hope you can check them out! (and if you go to Lincoln Park for either Toast or Orange, be sure to check out that neighborhood; it’s pretty cute.)

for camera bags, I really love the SLR sloop from Photojojo (http://photojojo.com/store/awesomeness/slr-sloop-camera-bag/). it works great and is cute. I also have a Jo Totes (http://jototes.com/index.html) bag for “fancier” camera-necessary occasions and i love it, too. I don’t think they have the style that i purchased anymore but there are a bunch of options there.

Jennifer Waldrop - girl I have tmobile (and an AWESEOME plan that I never want to give up) and I have an iphone! We bought a 3g off a friend when he got a 4 and jailbroke it. I love love love it. I can see you rocking something like this http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-B_gPAH38ugU/ThPaag3plrI/AAAAAAAAALQ/Eroawkrr_j8/s1600/boyfriend.jpg + or + http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-GPPCYUqMZLg/TZjKOVpVn-I/AAAAAAAAAFw/sMt_dUPbcfA/s1600/c%252Bl.jpg you could wear oxfords with the white pants and denim top too. I just got some really cute brown ones from Target for 19.99! Have fun!

Debbie C - So excited that you’re coming to Chicago! I’ve lived in or near Chicago my whole life. One of my favorite restaurants to go to is Lula Cafe (lulacafe.com). It’s in the Logan Square neighborhood and they offer really good, fresh American-style food using local ingredients. The menu changes with the seasons. Not the most kid-friendly place, but it it’s just you and Chris, give it a try! If you are on Michigan Avenue in the morning, a good breakfast place is Yolk in the South Loop area (http://www.yolk-online.com/). Hope you have a great time!

Lesley - I’m so jealous you get to eat all the great food people are talking about here today. Mmm. Deep dish pizza and a REAL Chicago Dog. Seriously. Can I send a cooler with you so you can fill it up with treats to bring home to me?

Rutheah - Chicago!! How fun. I don’t have any cool suggestions as to where you should go…however, I did just get a nifty camera bag for my birthday! It’s a J. Tote…or Jo tote…something like that. I looooove it and it’s doubling as my purse/diaper bag too. Hehe. :) It even has a pocket that perfectly fits the iPad! So there’s my two cents. :)

lauren - congratulations!!
i have an epiphanie bag for my camera/lenses and i LOVE it! (http://epiphaniebags.com/). very versatile and everyone always compliments me on my ‘awesome purse’! :)
i’m not exactly sure what to recommend for awesome clothes for your shoot, but i do see a lot of cute and fashionable women wearing clothes from Ruche. their prices are great and you can dress-up without looking too overly fancy! (http://www.shopruche.com/index.php)

Emiles - LOVE Chicago! Lou Malnati’s for pizza is amazing! Get a Chicago dog at any street vendor really. You’ll also want to find a good Italian beef sandwich while there. As for places to go – we’ve gone to the aquarium every time in town never disappointed. I love Milennium Park– pack a picnic or grab a dog and just head over to people watch and enjoy the day. This is also a good place to go after hitting the Pier all day…which is a place you should definitely go. The views from the Sears tower and John Hancock to me weren’t totally worth the wait in line. Finally we never have had a car in the city that we regularly used. Public transportation is fabulous convenient and cheap! Parking is not! OHHHH and definitely get the Chicago mix popcorn at Garrett’s. I agree with you on shopping…I tried it once in Chicago and everything was so expensive it was ridiculous.
As for places to get clothes…I’m currently in love with Banana Republic. They run deals online all the time for 40%25 off and I have to be pulled out of their outlet stores.

Carissa - Ack! I can’t believe no one has mentioned the IT bag by the Joy Bag Collection. It is one of the less expensive ones… as in only 70 some $. It fits in ANY PURSE! I love it! You can fit so much in it… body, couple of lenses, and still have some space in whatever bag/purse etc you carry it in. I usually have my body, a lens, a couple of diapers, my cell, etc in the bag and its still has room. :)
http://thejoybag.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1&products_id=10

courtney - The best food I’ve ever had in Chicago was at XOCO, a Rick Bayless place. The line is long (you order and pay at a register, but they won’t let you order til there’s a table available), but SO WORTH IT. Everything there is good, but especially the desserts…homemade soft-serve vanilla ice cream with maple bacon streusel and a caramel sauce. Or the churros dipped in the crazy dark chocolate sauce.

I also love making the rounds of the ten billion photobooths in Chicago…it’s a great way to see discover little Chicago neighborhoods. You can find where they are at http://www.photobooth. net. Have fun!

Holly R. - Ohh how fun! I have a couple of places that I like to go to in Chicago that are more local to the area. You have got to try Argo Tea if you like tea. They have so many choices. I like the chocolate mint tea. Amazing!

I have always enjoyed the Weber Grill restaurant in Schaumburg, which is a bit of a drive from downtown depending on the time of day that you are travelling. I have loved everything that I’ve tried there.

I hear that Penzey’s spices has the best spices and lots of choices. And I’ve always wanted to go to the Shedd Aquarium.

I actually like black leggings with a longer shirt is a fun look. I also like dark jeans with a fun tank or nice shirt. We are getting family pictures taken in October and I can’t decide what to wear either. Good luck Ashley! You are going to have so much fun!

Kimberly - YAY!!! CONGRATS on being an AUNT AGAIN=) So happy for your family!!! LOVE Chicago but only been there once:( Have a WONDERFUL time.

Dawn - Have you seen this bag? I wouldn’t call it cute… but sturdy and practical – I love it! http://www.onabags.com/store/women/the-brooklyn.html#chestnut Enjoy your trip!

Alison - Well you’ll need a good coat and a good scarf and probably some mittens – Old Navy has a decent trench right now, but you could probably find a better one. The wind off the lake can be fierce! But then again it can also be hot as ballz so you need shorts as well. City dwellers tend towards solids more than prints, and I say that having lived in a few. And deep dish pizza! You must get yourself some Chicago deep dish! There is a Swedish/Lesbian district in town (you have to think that those are related) but I forget where it is. If you feel like spending money on a meal, Chicago has a few of the world’s best restaurants and chefs (Michael Kornick, and some other chefs I’ll never remember the names of). Epicurious.com has a great little “chicago’s best restaurants” list! Also Chicago has a really gorgeous old theater some place, but that’s a landmark and you can’t miss it. Vietnamese sandwiches are also good there. You could go to Second City!! Oh my gosh go to Second City. It’s near the Cubs stadium. Tina Fey, Rachel Dratch, Tim Pryor, Amy Sedaris…oh my gosh so many people are alums of Second City, and they do shows all the time for pretty darn cheap. GO THERE :D

Lindsey Millard - For the camera bag….I was having the same issue. I couldn’t commit to just one bag. Luckily I came across this little gem. It’s a padded insert made for cameras/photographers so you can make ANY bag your camera bag!! It’s on http://www.thejoybag.com and it’s called the IT bag! I put the link below to take you right to the page. I love mine and I love being able to swap bags without it costing a fortune! Good luck and have fun in Chi-town!

http://thejoybag.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1&products_id=10

Katherine - I haven’t read through all the posts so I don’t know if I’m repeating things here, but here goes:
I’m a lifetime Chicago resident and I love my city! I really think you’d love the Lincoln Square neighborhood (different from Lincoln Park) up north. There’s so many cute little shops and a great German restaurant called Laschett’s – if you’re looking for German – a total dive but the food is fantastic. Also, there’s a beautiful bakery called Cafe Selmarie that has ah-maz-ing baked goods and delicious food.
Hmmm…. Definitely check out the main attractions – Art Institute, Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium. Walk along the lakeshore. The Architecture boat tour is worth the cost of the fare – you learn so much and it’s really fun and relaxing. Woo hoo! Have a blast and take lots of your beautiful pictures to post!

Yolanda - #2–I adore my Kelly Moore bag (I have the Posey). But definitely like the styles offered by Epiphanie. Jo’s camera bags are less expensive, but don’t seem as big or durable based on the photos, can’t say from personal experience.

#3–You can’t go wrong in a sleeveless dress + cardigan + platform sandals . Check out Kohls Simply Vera Wang collection for budget friendly options. If you wanna rock it but don’t have budget concerns, I think you could easily rock Anthropologie with your small frame.

christa - Chicago is a great city to visit! So much to do! Ive seen only a few postings for Portillos, but I would recommend it as the # 1 place to try. There are locations all over the chicagoland area. Good EVERYTHING – ESP their chocolate cake! You also must try a chicago style hot dog. And also very “chicagoan” is the deep dish pizza. There are 3 places all competing for the top spot: Giordanos, Uno’s, and Lou Malnati’s. All are good, and everyone has their own favorite. I would def check out Millennium Park on Michigan Ave to see the “bean” and the spitting faces. A walk up and down Michigan Ave will also give you great shopping and lots of people watching. A walk along the lake or on Navy Pier is a great idea as well. Have fun!

kari signe - Okay so my friend has an epiphanie ginger bag which is awesome because it totally doubles as a purse. Also she has looked at the Ketti Bags and Kelly Moore bags.

Jennifer - I went to Chicago 20 years ago with 4-H. We had dinner in Greektown and Chinatown and ate Chicago-style pizza. Yum! Another fun place was Ed Debevics–do a google image search to see a little about it. I ordered an epiphanie bag (ginger in brown) several months ago, but I won’t get it for several weeks.

Amanda - Hi Ashley! My husband and I love Chicago and we go there a lot.

We use hotwire to stay in the Steeterville area but we stayed out by the airport and took the Metra train in everyday. Free nighttime parking and daytime parking was $2 at the Elgin stop. We bought a punch card for the weekend which is cheaper than individual tickets. Parking is usually $40 a night downtown. It adds up.

The best breakfast place to go is Ronny’s Steakhouse and split the Ultimate breakfast and watermelon juice for $10. Downtown Dogs is the best hotdog place. We’ve been meaning to try Hot Doug’s for gourmet dogs. Dinner time is always fun because there are so many choices! We use Groupon Now! for a lot of deals. Old Town is a pretty hip neighborhood and the L will get you there. Adobo Grill is there and is some of the best Mexi food I’ve had. Giordanno’s Pizza is a must for chicago style pizza. Garrett’s popcorn is the best but be prepared to stand in line for up to an hour. FLiP Crepes at the Chicago French Market are also tasty for breakfast. Ghirardelli’s chocolate factory is good for a hot fudge sundae.

If you are staying downtown, a nighttime stroll down Michigan Avenue is fun. The city is beautiful at night. The clubs are expensive. Even when we don’t have kids, we are still tired enough to go back to the hotel. Ikea is there too. Yeh.

For your photoshoot: I am in love with Old Navy’s fall clothes right now. There is a striped crocheted cropped top that would look sweet with a white cami and some dark denim cropped jeans, bracelet and flats. I am a jeans, flip flop, tee kind of girl that is slowly trying to break into a fashion realm. Slowly. Nobody cares what you wear in Chicago though. Take an umbrella. They are expensive there.

Kelly Moore bags are awesome and not so awesomely expensive. I have a Sony Nex-5 (mini SLR) and I have a MIniMass bag from Patagonia that I use as a daily purse/camera bag/stash a few diapers and sippys bag.

Your sis’s pictures are perfect. Great work. I also adore the fact that you put your computer away for your kids. Naptime is my weakness.

I hope you have fun in Chicago.

amanda torres - You HAVE to go to Jimmy’s Red Hots. Just google it. It is definitely a local place. No where to sit. You walk through this little building to order, then eat outside or in your car. The polishes & hot dogs are wrapped up with fresh cut fries that are the best I’ve ever had. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. Whatever you do DO NOT ask for KETCHUP! Be sure to visit the Art Institute (such a great collection and I think Tuesdays are free, maybe not all) and then a quick walk to Millenium Park (gorgeous). Giordano’s is not a local dive, but it is the best Chicago style pizza. We’ve eaten many different pizza places and it remains my favorite! Also, do Navy Pier and Lake Shore Drive. Really pretty. Lincoln Park Zoo is also neat. A zoo right in the middle of the city with free admission. If you’re already in the Lake Shore Drive area, you should walk through. Okay, my novel is over as I do not have any valuable to say about the other 2 questions.

amanda torres - One more thing…Chicago is set up in ethnic districts and of course I find the Puerto Rican district the best. You’ll know you’re there because there is a gigantic Puerto Rican metal flag that goes across the entrance and exit. Any of the restaurants there are delicious, but the one across from the high school is the best!

Carol V - You might want to check out this Etsy site. My daughter bought me this camera bag and I love it.http://www.etsy.com/listing/80499846/camera-bag-messenger-style-in-rich. As far as photo session outfit, I love jeans and tank top! Simple, add one cha cha in the form of jewelry or scarf. Have fun.

Brendazzle* - I have a super cute camera bag from Jo’s Totes (http://jototes.com/handbags) that I love. I have the rose one in sugarplum and strangers are constantly surprised when I tell them that it’s a camera bag, not a purse. The velcro dividers do occasionally need to be pushed back into place because I find I’m constantly tugging them loose but other than that, it’s simple-stupid to use and I can find everything!

Robyn Burgiel - You HAVE to eat a “Fat Johnnie’s”….the BEST hotdogs in Chicago! It’s not in the best neighborhood, but worth it…7232 S Western Ave, Chicago IL 60686.
If you see Fat Johnnie (ummm, you can’t miss him), tell him Tillie’s daughter, Robyn, sent you!

Urska - I am not from Chicago but my favorite place to eat breakfast or brunch is m.henry. When I think of perfect breakfast food, it is from them. you won’t regret it. http://www.mhenry.net/

Jenni - 1st- I LOVE that you are giving tips on photoshop actions… thank you!

Now, to your questions:
1. I have yet to visit Chicago so I can’t help you there… although, I will be excited to see what you do so I can add a few things to my travel list!
2. I would check out JoTotes (http://jototes.com/handbags) for a cute/functional camera bag. They are currently having a giveaway at 1825 (http://eighteen25.blogspot.com/)! Heck, you might be able to snag them as a sponsor and get to try one out!
3. I LOVE your style. I think you should totally rock your style in photos… afterall, they are supposed to capture you in a moment in time. But, if you want to up the ante on your own style then I’d check out the many cute fall outfits being “pinned” on pinterest nowadays!

Betsy - My husband and I went on an architectural boat tour in Chicago a few summers ago and I LOVED it. So fascinating to learn more about the city that way. Sailing would be dreamy, too, although I’ve never had the chance to sail on Lake Michigan yet. If you like deep dish pizza, definitely try Giordano’s! SO YUMMY! I like it stuffed with spinach. :) Oh, and catching an outdoor concert in Millenium Park is very fun, too!

Rebekah @ It Only Gets Better - Camera bags: If you want a do-it-all laptop, camera, accessories enormous bag then I suggest Epiphanie’s Clover bag. I have one that I like to travel with so that I only have one bag to keep up with.

If you want a fashionable but more reasonably priced option I just discovered JoTotes’.
http://jototes.com/handbags Millie bag (I want one for me!)

If you are cheap and just want something more versatile and easy to carry, like me, then I suggest a Built bag that you can get for less than $50 at Adorama.com. I use my bright orange small Built bag for photo sessions ’cause I can keep it slung over my shoulder and it doesn’t get in the way.

http://www.adorama.com/catalog.tpl?op=itemlist&cat1=Cases&cat2=Camera%20and%20Gear%20Cases&cat3=System%20Bags%20%26%20Cases&Feature1=Built

Mareen - I think this one (http://jototes.com/handbags/rose-teal) is the cutest camera bag ever. One of my friends has it and she loves it.

Sarah - Horray for going to Chicago! As someone who is originally from there I have to respectfully disagree with those telling you to go to Geno’s East, very touristy and greasy. BLAH. You can get better pizza elsewhere. Also the ladies that suggested the smaller neighborhoods I think are going to be what your looking for. Cool vibes and local dives. Have fun this is a great time of year to visit Chicago.

Becky - My favorite things to do when people come to Chicago are the architectural boat tour and going to the Signature Room on the 95th floor of the Hancock. The view is better than the Sear tower in my opinion. My favorite restaurant is Icosium Kafé at Clark and Foster (granted we live on the north side). Yummy creperie!

Stephanie - I have only been to Chicago once and I loved the boat tour. I do not have a camera bag because I dont have a camera yet :( Yes that is my sad face. I however vote to wear your tank tops and flip flops in your photo session. Oh and I LOVE your new kitchen chairs! You always have some awesome scored thrift finds. I hope I can find/score 4 chairs soon any advice on where? My husband is going crazy with all my flea market adventures.

Tina I. - Gino’s East, Portillos, Billy Goat….I could go on and on….Love Chicago. Sorry I don’t have any suggestions for fancy-pants places. We aren’t fancy-pants people:-) Have a ball!

Debbie C - A couple more restaurants to try: Chicago is Rick Bayless land! Try Frontera Grill for awesome Mexican, or go to Xoco, right next door, for more casual Mexican or hot Mexican chocolate. If you want Spanish tapas, go to either Cafe Iberico or Cafe Ba-Ba-Reeba!, and make sure to get some sangria too. Both places are really good, and really crowded on the weekend evenings, so try to go during the day or a weekday. Enjoy!

Rachel Dallaire - Eat at Billy Goat Tavern in Chicago. Not the one on Navy Pier. The other one that you go under the road to get to and looks kinda scary from the outside. They have amazing cheeseburgers. http://www.billygoattavern.com/

Jenn - Here’s my fave outfit I’ve seen on Pinterest. Still tank top and jeans just a little dressed up! http://pinterest.com/pin/152453746/ Have a fun trip!

Christie - Born and raised on the south side of Chi-town! So much to do and see! Gino’s East, Ed Debevics, art district, Millenium Park, Lincoln Park, farmers markets all over the city every day, whatever you do, you’ll love it!

Abby - I love love LOVE my epiphanie bag http://epiphaniebags.com/. Was also lusting over a kelli moore bag for awhile…. http://kellymoorebag.com/ happy shopping!

Becs - Can’t help on 1 or 3 but Jo Totes gets my vote for the camera bag. I LOVE mine. Becsx

MissJillian - Oooh, we are celebrating our 10 year anniversary in Chicago this winter so I started a Pinterest board dedicated completely to Chicago – restaurants, lounges, attractions, hotels. Maybe it’ll help. Here’s the link: http://pinterest.com/missjillian/chicago-anniversary/ Happy trip planning!

Erin @ AroundTheFarmhouseTable - I’ve seen it posted several times, and I have to agree that Giordano’s Pizza is a must. I am a Tulsa girl myself, and I once walked a mile in the snow (no joke) to get this pizza when we had a delay at the Chicago airport.

Laurie - Check our Kelly Moore’s bags. So Cute!!! I have one and love it!

Molly - deep dish chicago style pizza….follow your nose:)

kellie s. - Giordano’s and Portillo’s – just like others said. :D

Laurie M. - My husband and I LOVE Chicago. If you’re going to be there for a few days and really want to see a lot of museums and take some boat tours, the City Pass is the way to go. Definitely recommend the Museum of Science and Industry. Catching a Cub’s game. Gino’s East. We especially loved the boat tour of downtown. We love everything about the city. The view of the city from the women’s restroom on the 97th floor of the Hancock Building is seriously the best view in the entire city. Go at night if you can.

Jenny B. - Fun!! I’ve only been to Chicago once, and it was for a wedding several years ago. The rehearsal dinner was at Giordano’s Pizza http://www.giordanos.com/ (don’t know which location), and it was DE-LICIOUS! :D

Kendra - I have had and SOLD Jo Totes bags. Not the greatest quality. I had a Kelly Moore, but did not like how big it was & returned it. I had an Epiphany, like it but sent it back due to price and wanted a color that went with everything. I have this Jill-e http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000SKT2MO & LOVE it! Perfect size. I’m also considering this one http://www.amazon.com/Jill-Designs-049742-Carryall-Bodacious/dp/B004UAF0GA/ref=wl_it_dp_o?ie=UTF8&coliid=IU4G6AEVEWFMM&colid=3N6L6WGU8TIK or this one http://www.amazon.com/Case-Logic-SLRC-206-15-4-Inch-Backpack/dp/B002DW99H8/ref=wl_it_dp_o?ie=UTF8&coliid=I1WGGPD9D3748S&colid=3N6L6WGU8TIK for small trips.

Alyssa - Hi! I have lived in Chicago for 6 years ago and know a thing or two about the best, less expensive things to do. Here you go:
- My favorite place to eat (and Tina Fey’s) is Athenian Room in Lincoln Park. AMAZING cheap Greek food. You must get the Greek fries.
- The zoo is free and beautiful, also in Lincoln Park.
- For food after the zoo, either R.J. Grunts or Pizza Oven and Grinder (although it’s not “typical” deep dish).
- For the BEST deep dish go to Pequod’s in Lincoln Park (it has a caramelized cheese crust), but Giordano’s and Malnati’s are good too. I stay away from Gino’s East.
- To get great city views, don’t go to the Sears Tower. Go to the Hancock on Michigan Ave. and go to the Signature room. The entrance is on Chestnut Street. You don’t pay to go up there…instead buy a drink or appetizer. The best place to take pictures…the women’s bathroom!
- The architectural tour (really any of them) are a must. Amazing information and views.
- At night check out a jazz club on Lincoln Ave. in Lincoln Park. (Chicago Blues is good)

Hope that helps!

Krystina - In Chicago you should go to Gino’s East for Pizza. Yummy, yummy, yumm. If you go to Chicago and don’t have pizza it’s like flipping them off or something…

Second, for my “camera bag” I just use an over sized purse. I took the padding out of my “traditional” camera bag and sewed in the padding to my purse so it would be covered. It works like a charm and it’s super cheap! (If you have the materials at least).

Krystina - Oh I almost forgot the more important part! What to visit.

Go to Millenium Park. It’s free and there are some fun things to see, like the bean/cloud gate. It’s near the Art Institute. Also, Navy Pier. If you are there on a Wednesday (and Sunday?) there is a fireworks show at night. I’d pick the John Hancock Tower over the Sears Tower (and if you go to John Hancock the concierge at the top will give you a business card, if there’s a line at Gino’s East you show them this card and you jump to the front of the line!)

There’s also lot’s of good shopping, Lake Michigan is nice. That’s all I can think of for now but I know I’m missing all sorts of stuff.

Rachel T. - I LOVE my Kelly Moore handbag. It’s beautiful, durable, and they come in a billion sizes. It’s SO perfect. Please check out their stuff – really really really great.

Amy - :D

Chicago is my hometown and there are a few hidden secrets beyond the multitudes of first timer hot spots. Check out the free museum days! (Yes they’re free on certain days). Millenium Park will offer you a break from the concrete with free dance lessons in the park (also check this out!). Navy Pier has a free firework show (set to music) every Wed and Saturday night at 9pm (or 9:30). Oak Street Beach will give you a day at the beach like none other (you’ll feel like you’re getting the best of both worlds). Use the public transportation if you can, its cheap, and can get you ANYwhere you want to go.

Some helpful links before you leave:
http://www.metromix.com (Chicago)- everything that is going on and more info than you’ll ever need.
http://www.chicagoparkdistrict.com (we offer many free perks to the Chicago visitors (movies in the park, etc.)

http://www.transitchicago.com (transit system) You can take the Orange Line from Midway Airport all the way into downtown and beyond, as well as taking the Blue Line from O’Hare Airport into downtown and beyond. No cabs ever needed.

Last but not least if you get a chance. Have a Bacino’s (yes Bacino’s) stuffed pizza, Brunch at either Yolk, or Sweet Maple Cafe (both are better the earlier you can get there), and try not to leave town without at least a bite of a italian beef.

Have Fun!!!!

Claudia - BEST RESTAURANT IN CHICAGO IS MELI’S!!! Everything is organic and homemade. There are only two spots open and the lines are long, but the food is great!! Only open for breakfast and lunch so go early (and a weekday preferrably).

Jessica - I saw this on Pinterest and thought it was super cute . . . and not too camera-y.

http://jototes.com/handbags/rose-marigold

Micki - So if you are looking for an adventure away from downtown, I say head to my neck of the woods, Rogers Park (the very north neighborhood in Chicago). There is a local hippie-restaurant-bar/general store here that has been around since the 70′s. It’s called The Heartland Cafe.
http://www.heartlandcafe.com/
We frequently take our 2 young boys for dinner. Great food, laid back atmosphere and it is very accessible from the red line (the ‘el’). From the restaurant it is a short, pleasant walk to the lake. Rogers park lake side is lovely and I would highly recommend spending an afternoon, anywhere along the lake (people watching, renting bicycles, or watching the free fire work show from navy pier on Sat evenings at 9:30 – best seen from the concrete wall just north of oak street beach). I could go on and on. But if you are looking for a dive – this is one of my favs. Have a great trip! ps. I love your blog.

Becca C - I have a feeling you’d love the ideas of http://www.bodenusa.com. Super cute and funky clothes- and all so colorful! their prices are crazy, but they have an “outfit maker” that’s pretty fun to imagine what things look like together. I mean, I’m all about Target after going on their website. Treat anything as a neutral and wear it together…at least that’s what I used to tell people when I worked retail haha.

sonal - I went here: http://www.manafoodbar.com/ and had an amazing experience. It’s vegetarian but holy cow… it’s inventive, hip, organic, lovely. You would love it and I hope that you consider it. Enjoy!

Susan - I love my lowepro backpack…it’s not the cutest, but it is soooo handy to carry around. i tied some ribbons to the zipper to give it a personal touch. It get get dirty when we hike and play in the mud, camera stays clean, and I throw it in the washing machine. Holds my phone, credit card, snacks, and cash. Everything I need when I’m with my camera, hubby, and kiddos! :-)

Chantelle - Chicago style pizza at a local dive Gino’s East. I lived in Chicago for a year and another favorite was the Big Bowl for fresh Chinese http://www.bigbowl.com/.

Melissa - For old school Italian food, go to Gene and Georgetti. We went to Chicago about 4 years ago when I was pregnant with my first. The food was amazing. The pizza at Lou Malnati’s was really good. We stayed at Palmer House and loved it. Have fun, it is an amazing city!

Jill - I lived in Chi town for years…love and miss it! I agree with others about deep dish, but would recommend Pequod’s for you since its much more local dive than some of the others. Eat breakfast at Ann Sather…amazing! Potbelly is a great sandwich place. Kingston Mines if you want to go out for some awesome blues! And, really try to go to a Cubs game if you can…Wrigley is the best! Go to Yakzee’s before or wvwn during the game. Also, the architectural boat tour is a must, also a drink at signature lounge in John Hancock to see the amazing view, and the bean at Millenium Park. Have a great time!

emily (justem) - I live in Chicago and pretty much everything that I wanted to say has been said, but I’ll say it again. ;)

Pizza – I prefer Giordanos to Gino’s East. Gino’s has a cornbread-y crust that I’m not a fan of.

Other restaurants – A friend and I have dined a couple of times at Davanti Enoteca in Little Italy. It’s SO good and not touristy. I also second heading up to Devon (pronounced DeVON)for some great ethnic food.

Navy Pier – just walk outside for the view…the inside is hideously touristy. I do like the stained glass museum, though.

Architectural Tour – My favorite is the Wendella combined river/lake tour because you get both the architecture part on the river but also the great views from the lake.

The View – John Hancock is better than Sears Tower, but skip the overpriced dinner on the 95th floor…just get a drink.

Museums – The Art Museum and the Field Museum are both incredible, but a little stuffy and a LOT to see. As others have said, I prefer the Museum of Science and Industry. It’s just FUN. :)

My favorite places to just meander are Oak Park (out of the city), the Armitage neighborhood/L stop (brown line), the Southport neighborhood/L stop (brown line).

Transportation – take the L!! Or cab it. :) Paying for parking is just plain silly!

Tracy Pousseur - I found these really great camera bags at http://jototes.com/handbags, recently on eighteen25′s blog.

Monica - Thanks for the freebie link, Ashley. I’ve never been to Chicago, but I hope you guys have a great time. And how totally rad that little Miss Sweet P is going to be a big sister!

Julia - authentic Spanish tapas and the world’s best sangria! Cafe Iberico. you won’t be sorry :)

Sharon Osborn - Borsabella.com makes some great little gadget bags that I use for my camera. You can request a skinny shoulder strap so that you can carry it cross body too :)

Karen - Thank you for sharing the free actions from Pioneer Women! So much fun! I’ve never been to Chicago and I don’t have much advice on a camera bag… but I hope you and your husband have a wonderful time!!

MaraMay Baca - I have been wanting Belle from epiphaniebags.com since the beginning. lol There are also these fabulous looking bags on etsy the shop is called mariforssell.etsy.com, I love them. I want one of each. LOL Good luck and I can’t wait to see what you end up getting.

Kari - If you like beer, for sure the Hopleaf, which is in Andersonville. If you are there during the day, there are great vintage shops. Not cheap, but great looking! Scout and Brimfield.

Nicole - Which reminds me…we’ll be married 7 years this month and I still don’t have a wedding album…I purchased the digital negatives but haven’t done anything with them save for having a few prints made – how sad is that?!? To be fair, we’ve had three children in that time so the album hasn’t exactly been top of mind ;) great idea on your wedding photos – they look great! You guys do look young! But I can’t believe how much I have aged in the last five years since our oldest was born – a little scary but I’ll take some dark circles and fine lines for those little stinkers for sure! Happy Anniversary!!

Lauren - You will not regret going to Lincoln Park… I could have strolled the streets all day! (and the zoo is incredible and free!) Uno’s pizza is a hole-in-the-wall pizza place and it is AMAZING! You can’t really go wrong with pizza anywhere in chicago. Have a great time! It’s my favorite city ever!!!!!

Kristin - I live in the Chicago suburbs and LOVE Chicago. It is by fa my favorite big city in the US. Giordanos is my fav. Chicago deep dish. Also Pockets is a yummy little restaurant. I have heard amazing things about Salvage fom some friends although I haven’t been able to go. The zoo’s are a blast, Brookfield and lincoln park even without kiddos. Improv Olympics or second city is too much fun. Any place u go will be fabulous. And if u are there on a Sunday and need a place to worship New Hope church of Villa Park would love to see you. ;)
And about your pictures. I agree with going with a dressed up version of yourself. Jeans a fancy tank or cute tunic shirt, bling sandals or flats. I am a huge fan of the Loft for fancier casual clothes. :) have a blast with your hubby in Chicago. Oh and the Kane county flea market is awesome if you have a rental car.

Kristen - Ooh, you’re first trip to Chicago?! You are going to have tons of fun!! I live here and love it. I think you would really like the Bucktown/Wicker Park area. Not touristy at all, lots of cute shops. Go eat at Big Star. Amazing tacos and great place to sit outside and people watch. In the general mag mile/downtown area, a local favorite is Portillo’s. You can get a great chicago dog here. Garret’s popcorn is a must, get the “Chicago mix.” I live in Lakeview, near Wrigley field. Easy cab ride from downtown ($15). If you find yourself up there, you won’t see many tourists if you eat at Angelina (cute, romantic Italian place located at Broadway & Addison) or Rocks (fun bar with good food). Like other people have mentioned, the architecture river cruise is really fun and a great way to see the cool buildings without walking everywhere. Can’t wait to hear how your trip goes!

valerie - Just to whet your appetite for all things Chicago: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D8pmNwvbV3Q&feature=share

Keshet Starr - Camera bag ideas: Jo Totes, and Cheeky Lime!

Ashley - I have a Kelly Moore camera bag that I just used on a two week trip to Portland, OR. I love it! It isn’t the biggest bag you can get, but it held my camera body w/50mm lens attached, my 18-105 mm lens, and all my personal items as well. It looks just like a cute purse! http://kellymoorebag.com/womens/bhobo.html
My friend has an Epiphanie bag that she used for the same trip and she loved it! http://epiphaniebags.com/#/shoplola/

Ashley - Hooray! You’re coming to Chicago! I live downtown in the heart of it all and am absolutely in love. Here’s my suggestions.

1. Grand Lux Cafe on Michigan Ave. (Fantastic food, you won’t be disappointed)

2. Third Coast on Dearborn St. (For lunch. This is my favorite place in the city! Very local, no tourists.)

3. Pizano’s Pizza, 864 N. State St. (This is a hole in the wall, LOCAL sit down pizza place that is so, so incredible. It’s my favorite pizza in the city, and I LOVE pizza.)

4. The Kerryman, 661 N. Clark St. (Most beautiful outdoor patio I’ve found, and good food)

5. Soprano’s, 2901 N. Sheffield (Italian)

6. M Burger (For a quick casual lunch, amazing burgers!!)

7. Molly’s Cupcakes, 2536 N Clark (Again, my favorite, and a super fun atmosphere!)

8. Coffee Shops: Lovely Bake Shop , 1130 N Milwaukee
Filter, 1373 N Milwaukee
Julius Meinel, 3601 N. Southport

9. Breakfast: Bakin & Eggs, 3120 N. Lincoln
Nookies, 1746 N. Wells
The Original Pancake House, 22 E Bellevue Pl
Yolk

10. Chinese: Ben Pao, 52 W. Illinois

11. And shhh, don’t tell anyone I said this, but do yourself a favor and DO NOT go to Gino’s East. If you want to go to a mainstream pizza place, Lou Malnati’s at 1120 N. State (This location is gorgeous- it used to be an Anthropologie :)

12. And I agree with Garrett’s Popcorn! :)

Have a great time!

Ashley - I love my Kelly Moore camera bag!

Emily - Ditto one of the Amandas who rec’d the architecture cruise. My parents & MIL have been on it multiple times and found it fascinating. Another thing that sounded cool was the Chicago ethnic food tours (http://www.chicagofoodplanet.com/). Our AAA magazine had an article about it earlier this year and it sounded like a really fun way to sample food @ some smaller places.

Kellie B - I have some wardrobe suggestions for your photos:

a) Skinny jeans, cute flats, and a flowy top. Your husband should wear something equally casual chic, like jeans and a sweater, etc.

b) Dressier outfit: a cute dress with or without a belt.

I like when the photographer lets you change outfits, that way you have a few different options if one doesn’t turn out. But, you are so cute that anything you wear will be darling.

Jamie - Congratulations Auntie!!! Wonderful pics you did for them, and super cute way to announce the little arrival!

Jamie - Camera bags….Kelly Moore, I have the B-hobo in grey…LOVE it! Although I now wish I had gotten the next bigger one.
Also LOVE Jo Totes! Super cute bags and a little less expensive then Kelly’s bags!

Megan S - DEFINITELY visit Devon on the north side. You feel like you’re actually in the middle east! I think you’d love it. Great food, cool little shops, unique atmosphere.

Aimee - My friend Ketti makes the most adorable camera bags… I have 2! Love them! Ketti Handbags.

Melissa - Hi Ashley! I LOVE Chicago–I live about two hours from it. :) You definitely have to get a deep dish pizza! Try Giordianos. It’s amazing. Also, Wicker Park is a cool neighborhood to check out with lots of bars, independent bookshops, coffee shops, etc. Have fun!

Meg - Since I am too lazy to read through all the comments..Garretts popcorn- Caramel corn for sure, though many swear by the Chicago mix (caramel/cheese popcorn) If you are flying into O’Hare there is a shop there, otherwise a couple all in the city.

Kelly - My best restaurant suggestions for Chicago are breakfast ones. Bongo Room will blow your mind with it’s wonderfulness! We went to Orange this last time and enjoyed it as well but Bongo Room is best.

I was impressed with E.leaven a bakery that filled up my 16 month old’s cup with soy milk for free! I always enjoy going to Trader Joe’s when I’m there for groceries for a picnic or a snack for the hotel or whatever. I will second many others and say that Giordano’s Pizza is so super yummy!

I know you said you’re not super into shopping but one or two places that might interest you are P.O.S.H. It is sort of a “flea market shop”. I really enjoy browsing there. They have lovely things, sometimes silver from hotels, old airline or hotel dishes, etc. They play relaxing music and the whole atmosphere is just lovely.

I also enjoy browing at Paper Source. Their mission is to inspire you to do something creative every day.

The Bean is really fun and full of great photo ops. Buckingham Fountain is a must for me too. Oh and the Botanic Garden. It is way far north but you can take the Metra out and then walk to it just about a mile. It is free (except for parking). The cafe is great and it is just a gem! We have been twice and really enjoy it.

I don’t know if you will be there when the Summer Dance series is still going on in Grant Park but if it’s a Friday night and it’s still going I would highly recommend it. So many different people all out eating and relaxing listening to music. Great atmosphere and people watching.

Evanston is pretty far out of the mainstream but it has a good Mediterranean place call Olive Mountain.

Have fun! Kelly

Nicole - I put my camera in a soft lunchbox! It’s not too bulky or too expensive!!

W - Oh my gosh you are coming to Chicago! Will you have time to do a photo shoot? :) Seriously, our family would love to have photos taken by you – you are so amazingly talented! Please email me! Thank you!
Great Chicago restaurants:
Hot Doug’s, Sun Wah Bar-B-Que, Chi Cafe, Bandera, Le Colonial, RL restaurant, Cafe Iberico or Cafe-ba-ba-reeba, Joy Yee’s, National 27, XOCO, Berghoff Cafe, Brett’s Kitchen, Sprinkles cupcakes

W - Also….90 Miles Cuban Café, Artopolis Bakery & Cafe, Ken Kee Restaurant

As many have already mentioned, Architecture boat tour, drinks at Signature lounge of John Hancock building.

If you don’t have time for the Architecture tour, take a water taxi ride.
