Our Thanksgiving

We had a great Thanksgiving break celebrating with Chris’ family: 1 grandpa, 1 grandma, 4 aunts, 4 uncles, 5 granddaughters, 7 grandsons…..onto some pictures….

(and just to clarify: Biggest Brother is 5 1/2, Big Brother is 3 1/2, Littlest Brother is 1 1/2, Baby Sister is 4 1/2 months)

Big Brother thinks that whenever the cowboy hat is on he is Indiana Jones

Inflatable soccer goal, Ugly rainboots, Indiana Jones Cowboy hat, John Deere hoodie – thankful for my boy.11.09thksgive-2

What’s Thanksgiving without a little goat chasing?

11.09thksgive-3

11.09thksgive-4

The boat looked nice sitting by the pond….

11.09thksgive-5

All the kids left and Chris pulled the boat into the water so I could take a peaceful, relaxing ride around the pond by myself. He even packed a picnic meal of Pumpkin Pie and a caramel latte for me to enjoy as I floated about….it was dreamy.11.09thksgive-6

Oh wait, that was a dream. The boat did make it to the water, but the rides weren’t so peaceful and quiet…there was a small hole in it and the paddles were long sticks.11.09thksgive-711.09thksgive-811.09thksgive-9

If you have water and my boy, you better have worms too. His cousin (girl) was a bit appaled to watch the guys hook the worms. She said, “Why are you killing them? That’s wrong. Worms are creatures too.” She makes me smile.
11.09thksgive-10

This Thanksgiving I was thankful for chubby baby cheeks.

11.09thksgive-11

I didn’t take many food pictures, in fact I didn’t really eat. The circus act of feeding four little ones is my built-in way to avoid high calorie consumption during the holidays (at least if I look at it that way I can be thankful instead of grumpy). Then again I did stop by the cookie plates each time I passed the kitchen. My neice didn’t want to have her picture taken.11.09thksgive-12

There are 7 grandsons, ages: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 15. Can you imagine the food bill in a couple of years?! Here’s the 3 (mine), 5 (mine) & 7 year olds.11.09thksgive-13

Hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving….

FYI Google Reader still is not picking up my blog

bopha - man, i was sitting there thinking how nice your hubby is….all to find out it was just a dream, too funny

Jen - You’re family is adorable. I want to tell all my friends about your bloggy blog but I can’t until after Christmas or they will see all the crafty gifts I’m going to make for them. Don’t worry. I’ll send them swarming in 3 weeks :)

So glad I found your blog today!

JEN

Ysa - love your photograph =) it’s very nice

This is what happens when your dad’s inbox is too full and your brother (who is only 15 months older) wants to help dress you…

Just curious…for those of you who Google Reader stopped working on your blogs…did it eventually just start working again?

Melissa - Too cute… and no it hasnt started working yet for me!

Meagan - Mine still isn’t working, Ashley. Hope you had a good Thanksgiving!

Erin - My Google reader isn’t working either, but I’m just so relieved to find out you’re still posting- I have lots to catch up on!

ari Morris - nope, no google reader yet.

Jill R - So sweet! We also have a little “helper” at our house who likes to “help” with his younger brother. This picture captures that perfectly.

ElleBows - No, it’s still not working :-)

Cindy Scorsone - Mine is not working either!

Chelsea Strong - This is so sweet. Our munchkin is due in few days, and somehow, I see this in our future. Comfortable husband, baby, pile of laundry. And nobody seemingly bothered by the pile up :)

Love your blog, just found it this weekend. Your photography is amazing! (As I’m sure you know.) I’ve used your ISO tutorial this weekend to counteract my crappy point and shoot, and it’s definitely done the trick. Thanks!

Cheree - My google reader still isn’t importing. Love how your son “helped” dress your baby girl.

ElleBows - Oh, that was supposed to be a sad face and not a happy face that I put after working! oops!

Lacy - I just love your blog and your family.

And I miss that your blog has stopped showing up in my Reader!

Still not working for me, either. :(

Jenny Lynn - I just realized today that my Google Reader had stopped! I had wondered why you hadn’t updated for awhile but I hadn’t looked at your blog because I knew you were in my reader. Then, when I was looking at Daily DIY today I saw your tutorial for the canvas bag. Then realized I’ve been missing a lot of posts!! I’ve got some catching up to do :)

So You Think You’re Crafty

sytyc

A month or so ago I went with my sister to see So You Think You Can Dance? It was a great show…my sister shaked her booty the whole time, but mine can’t find a beat if someone tried shaking it for me! Lesley was excited each time a new dancer came on stage and performed – I felt a bit left out to an extent b/c I had never seen the show. NO WORRIES I have found my replacement…….So You Think You’re Crafty?! It is an online challenge “10 Weeks – 10 Crafters – 10 Challenges! Who’s the craftiest? You decide!” Yep, an online craft challenge. It’s fun to see what they come up with each theme…crafters aren’t revealed until after you vote, so you are never sure who you are voting for. I just think it would be so much fun to be a crafter on it! Here are some of my favorite projects so far:

sytyc-leavessytyc-bagssytyc-headbandThis week’s challenge is based on this:

sytyc-turkey

Each week a tutorial is posted of the winning craft. This week I am hoping this skirt wins because I really want to try my hand at making it!

I won’t be posting again until Monday (at least that is the plan)…enjoy your Thanksgiving!!

christina larsen - Neat idea!!! Happy Thanksgiving!

Mique - Hi Ashley-
Thank you for the email. I added you to Bloglines- so it’s a OK there. Still getting your feeds. :) I’ve had that happen with 30days a few times and it’s so frustrating. Not sure why it happens.
And my turn to thank you- that little leaf headband was mine. Thanks for posting it here. Still in the competition and loving it!
Happy Thanksgiving!

Crystal - Fun…love a contest!! Great crafts but leaning towards the skirt myself-so cute!

Ashley - Ashley – Just saw your doilie bag on design*sponge – CONGRATS! And I love that skirt too. I hope it can be made in grown-up girl sizes. Happy Thanksgiving!

Allison - Just saw your tote on Design Sponge too! Congrats. Thanks for the link can’t wait to vote!

Nikki - I was looking for the crafts from the womans gathering and I cant find them.. Is there a way you could direct me.

Lesley - Ha! You crack me up :) So you think you can craft, craft, craft…I’m singing that to the beat of the intro song! Happy pre-turkey day!

Meagan - Yes, I agree. I voted for the cute skirt too!

maegan - I’ve been loving so you think you’re crafty. I think it’s a terrific idea, and I do love that skirt too. Want to make one for me and my little girl.

Kate - Happy Thanksgiving!

Maria - Hi!

Love the things you do! I will be visiting soon again.

Maria from Sweden

around the house

First, let me say Happy Birthday to my mom…one Nana that can take on her grandsons in the leaves…

1109floor-09

This has been the norm in my house for many years…(just fyi wrestling is more fun if you pull your shirt over your head too)
1109floor-011

And now we have this cute little thing in the house…I kind of have a feeling she’s going to hold her own in the wrestling matches.

She’s got the best cheeks and rolls for kissing….oh I love them!

(Thank you Chris for agreeing to tear out carpet and put in painted wood floors…whenever you are ready to do it to the rest of the upstairs let me know!)1109floor-021109floor-031109floor-04

Basically the most impossible thing in my life right now is getting a picture of her smiling and looking at the camera. She smiles AT ME all the time, but not so much when I put a camera in front of my face…1109floor-05

On a random note…I got our 2009 Christmas ornament in the mail from Lisa Leonard. I love everything about it and it turned out better than I hoped. I wasn’t sure if she’d be able to fit all that I wanted on it, but she did. 1109floor-06

I will share pics of it later…when we first got married I had the great idea of making a special ornament each year and for each kid. That last until our second son was 6 months old…haven’t made one since.

and that’s a wrap

Just a quick note to my faithful blog readers…we wrapped up the Christmas Gathering tonight and now the blog is slammed with tutorials below. Chris took a couple shots of the night and me presenting. The tutorials begin after this post.

Shanalea - Where would you suggest looking for such a large frame. I have been wanting to a do a chalkboard frame for awhile, but haven’t found a frame large enough.

Christin - Love all the ideas! My favorite has to be the tote bag. I think that will be such a cute christmas gift for my son’s teacher & he can help make it! Thank you for taking the time to post all these tutorials on the blog for all of us that couldn’t make it to the Gathering.

a pocket full of posies - OH MY GOODNESS!!!! LOOOOVE them ALL!!! AMAZING!

Jill

Tess S - i would have been shaking in my boots! i’m not good in front of a crowd.

shanalea- i was just at the thrift store and saw some really darling frames attached to some questionable art pieces for well under $10. i’m sure you could always knock out the print and work from there.

my kidz rock - WOW! God has really blessed you with some talents! Thank you so much for sharing your fantastic ideas! I attended the Gathering, and now my daughter and I are making clipboards for all of her friends for Christmas (we just bought the scrapbook paper at Hobby Lobby). Please post the instructions – when I click on the top link it’s only the cork boards. Thanks so much!

Kate - I really like the round wood tray – I L-O-V-E your idea of using the shadows to trace!

nikki - I am looking fo the clipboard in structions and any advice on where to buy blank ones? I had a blask last night and I ready to crank out some crafts. I have a ton of craft supplies and always need new ideas.

christina larsen - I loved all of your ideas. Three of my favorites were the frappacino box/caddy, notepads covered in paper, and the cake plates. I hope I can find time to make these.

Mara - I adore all of your craft ideas. Your site if by far my favorite for crafts and photography! I am so inspired and I am going to attempt the Bandana Apron and gift them as gifts. Hopefully, I can make it to IKEA so I can tryout the Cork Coasters and Round Wooden Tray.

the inadvertent farmer - Can’t wait to look through them all…what a great list! Thanks, Kim

Nikki - Really enjoyed your crafts. I have bought the stuff to do the clipboards, but cant find instructions

Lynnette - I am in love with all your DIY! What a great find your site is today.

Suzan - wow,
I really think your site is awsome. there’s not much I wouldn’t make my self. I read the post of the nasty comment. the old grouch must not know what real crafting is.
I will link your site on my blog.

DIY {custom notebooks}

A quick and easy fix up for a basic notebook. I think it would be cute in a stocking or in a little gift basket with other things…

Supplies: Scrapbooking paper, ribbon, decorative tape, notebook (mine were a pack of 3 for $2.99 from Target), stickers, Mod Podge if you want to seal it1109ntebooks-01

Step 1: Measure scrapbooking paper to fit the cover and a bit on the inside

Step 2: Use spray adhesive to adhere the paper to the notebook (if you want to cover with Mod Podge you could)

Step 3: Hot glue ribbon to the top back of the journal

Step 4: Cover where the tape connects with decorative tape, label or sticker1109ntebooks-02

I added a few stickers with the initials of the recipients. Cute stuff.1109ntebooks-03

Lora Grim - Ashley,

I am curious about the spine of these notebooks. Do you put adhesive or mod podge on these or do you leave them untouched so they will be flexible when opening?

Thanks for all the great ideas. Lora

AshleyAnn - I ended up not using Mod Podge, but I think you could do a thin coat and it would still be flexible

ari Morris - i’ve been missing your posts…they havent’ come through my Reader since Nov 5…so sad! But now i’m up to date.

Ari

Mindy Howard - I tried this with Mod Podge twice and both times he paper wrinkled up and it looked terrible. What can I do?

DIY {bandana apron}

Okay you ladies that deem yourself as not having a crafty bone in your body…this tutorial you will love! Now, of course, there are TONS of ways to customize and create an apron…this post is not going to touch on any of those. I originally saw this idea in a Martha Stewart magazine years ago. These would make super cute Christmas gifts to go along with some homeade cookies or some other finger licking good food…

Supplies: Heat-n-Bond tape, ribbon, bandana, Fray Check

1109apron-1

Step 1: Cut your ribbon long enough to go across the width of the bandana and wrap around a body…tied in a bow. Apply Fray Check to ribbon ends to prevent fraying.

Step 2: Cut your Heat-n-Bond tape the width of the bandana

Step 3: Iron on the Heat-n-Bond1109apron-2

Step 4: Remove the paper backing from the Heat-n-Bond

Step 5: Center your ribbon on the center of the bandana

Step 6: Turn ribbon and bandana over to iron together. If the ribbon has a print on it, the iron can mess that up if you iron directly on it.

1109apron-3

Step 7: Pose like you are a rockstar for pictures.1109apron-4

I love these aprons because they are inexpensive and cute…which means I feel free to use it alot without worrying about messing it up. If you know a big sports fan you could make it out of the colors of their team….OSU an orange bandana with the polka dot black ribbon.

ashlee - your rockstar pose is right on…have you been practicing?! So this is what my girls, 11 & 9, are making for anyone they want for Christmas! great idea!

ElleBows - You are too cute!!!!

karen brown - LOVE this one for the little girls! My 5 year old would totally wear this and think she was big time!

Amy Tietsort - Ashley,

I attempted to make an apron tonight. My ribbon is not adhering to the bandana. Do you have any suggestions or answers to why it might not be sticking?

Love the idea and was going to give as Thanksgiving gifts for Christmas aprons.

Thanks.

AshleyAnn - Amy – I am not sure. I just followed the instructions on the Heat and Bond, you might review those. Make sure you iron settings are what the directions say…

katie - Just made 5 of these aprons for family for Christmas. They are TOO cute! I love matching the bandanas with all different kinds of ribbon! Thanks so much for such a great, easy idea that turns out so cute!

Flea - Have you made the tutus with ribbon and tulle? Those are frighteningly simple, and absolutely adorable.

Cat - I just made two of these for my nieces as an early Christmas present. (They’ll need them for baking cookies at Christmas and this way it won’t seem like I’m spoiling them on Christmas day! ;-) I made one with a pink bandana and one with a purple bandana, their favorite colors. Even used the polka dot ribbon! Great craft, thanks!

Andrea @ The Train To Crazy - Brilliant! Why didn’t I think of that?

DIY {Scrap paper magnets}

Not sure about you, but I have TONS of little scraps of paper that is just too pretty to throw away. So what’s better than making a set of custom magnets instead of throwing all that cuteness away. I saw the idea here on Sei Lifestyle, her’s are super cute with sewing to boot.

I kept mine pretty fast and simple. Coffee sleeves provide the base.
1109magnets-01

Cut your coffee sleeves with a 1 1/2 inch circle punch. Do the same with various papers or stickers…use Mod Podge to glue them all together. Top it all off with a coat of Mod Podge then attach a magnet to the back.1109magnets-021109magnets-03

Add a bit of cute wrapping and you have yourself a fun stocking stuffer. I think this would be a great idea for girls to make for their friends…they would stick to lockers.

Donna Rankin - Hey Ashley — after visiting ya’ll in OK, Katy was excited to show me your blog. It’s full of wonderful ideas and beautiful pictures of your kids. I used to do crafting when my kids were little too. Makes me want to get back into it. : ) Katy and I talked about trying the clothespins using recycled Christmas cards to hold next year’s cards. I’ll keep you posted on that…..

Happy New Year to you and your family!
Love,
Aunt Donna

Tonia Darge - Love this!!! I told my husband I will start this craft by going to Starbucks every day for week in order to collect enough coffee sleeves. Makes sense, right?!!!

DIY {closet dividers}

I’ve always dreamed of a cute, well-organized closet, but mine is far from that. My daughter’s, however, is shaping up quite cutely. Remember the hangers I made? Well, now there are dividers too. Necessary…probably not. Fun to make…yes. Good gift idea for your next baby shower or a Christmas present for a new mom…you bet (especially combined with the hangers)!

Supplies: paint, scrapbooking paper, Mod Podge, # stickers, wooden letter “O”s1109closetdivider-01

Paint the back. Trace onto paper. Glue paper to wood.1109closetdivider-02

Trim paper. Add stickers for the sizes. Top coat with Mod Podge.1109closetdivider-03

Jessica Payne - This was my favorite thing! I loved this idea.

Ann McNellis - Just wondering how you get the “o” on the rod if it is mounted in the closet already? Did you open it up somehow?

Thanks for all the great ideas last night. I had a great time!

Meagan - So cute! Beautiful closet!

AshleyAnn - Ann – all the rods in our closets have one side that has a section cut out so you can easily remove the rod….
