Ashlyn {senior session}

Several months back I received a beautiful email from a mom about her daughter. From the email I could tell this was a mom that deeply loves her daughter and is tremendously proud of her. It has been a while, but I am pretty sure I cried reading it. Well that email led to this senior session this GORGEOUS senior session. I sure don’t remember high school girls being so beautiful when I was there….

Ashlyn, it was an honor to meet you. I hope these pictures live up to your high expectations! Congratulations on your senior year…I had so much fun with you and your mom doing this session!

Big Brother was watching me edit these and stopped me when I got to the ones below. He said she looks just like a princess.1009ashlyn-08

Before anyone sends me an email…no I am not currently booking sessions or weddings. I do still have a few on the books from WAY back.

There is a tab on the top of the blog “info”, under that tab is a listing of local photographers. Sorry.

We did this session on a very overcast day – which typically people think is terrible for pictures. It made me think about doing a post sometime on taking advantage of the automatic settings on your camera for those of you that do not know how to shoot manually. Is there an interest on that?

Thoughtful gentlemen

There are those few great moments when I know I am getting through to my boys. For instance this day – the boys and I were playing legos and on their own initiative the Lego Men gave the Lego Girl a flower….I was so proud – they are becoming thoughtful gentlemen.
1009eraser-01

And then there are the other days. Like this one…where I found a random object on the floor. At first glance I thought an animal got into the house and left something behind.1009eraser-02

Then I found another piece just like it…only with bit marks.1009eraser-03

I continued to find several all over the house and could not figure out what they were from. Any guesses? It is so obvious to me now.1009eraser-04

The front of my dry eraser.1009eraser-05

The back…chewed up by one of those thoughtful gentlemen. I assumed it was the 1 year old. Nope. It was the 3 year old.1009eraser-06

I asked him why he took bites out of my eraser. He responded, “I was bored and my breath was getting tired. And I needed to be hydrated.”

Well, that obviously makes complete sense.

Shannon Phillips - I love it! I can’t stop Keegan from eating any sort of paper product. Toilet paper, newspaper, tissue paper, printer paper. You name it.

Trinity - So glad he knew why he did it……that makes complete sense!

Alba - I am laughing alone, hidding in the back of my pc, my collegues must think that I am completely crazy. this is an unbeatable explanation! ;-)

christina larsen - Of course, I always go to the back of the dry eraser when my breath gets tired. lol.

kelly - LOL! Well they do erase dry things, so I guess that makes them hydrating. :) That is too funny!

Little Dresses for Africa {a site makeover}

A few months back I contacted Little Dresses for Africa to see if they would be interested in a little website makeover. Their site was meeting all their needs, but I just had an itch to help with some changes if they were interested. They said “yes” and we set to work. I contacted ProPhoto to ask if they would consider donating a template since Little Dresses for Africa is a non-profit and all donations go directly to getting dresses to those in need. ProPhoto GENEROUSLY agreed and I am excited to say the new site is live. Please go check it out and let me know what you think of the new look!

Here’s a peek at the frontpage of the old site:1009ldfaold1

And here is a peek of the frontpage of the new site:1009ldfanew1

If you are a photographer looking for a blog template I highly recommend checking out ProPhoto custom blogs. If you choose to purchase one, use the code ASHCAM473 to get $10.00 off your purchase. I obviously love my ProPhoto blog. The customer service there is top-notch and I have nothing but good to say about their product.

I also want to thank Evie Houston designs for donating time and creativity in creating new print pieces for the organziation. Thanks Evie!

Amy Butler…Craft Hope…Great Grandpa

It arrived…my prize from the Amy Butler Midwest Modern contest. The fabric is super fun, but I have NO CLUE how to read patterns! So I guess I am going to be learning. The patterns I received look beautiful and the software looks amazing. The software has lots of patterns that you can customize and change digitally…oh to figure that out one day. I am stoked (to use one of my husband’s favorite words) to learn….I hope my mom is as excited to teach me :)
1009quilt-01

I originally thought I would use the fabric I won for my Craft Hope quilt, but it hadn’t arrived yet and I really needed to get started (seeing how I have never made a quilt before). I rummaged through my fabric piles and choose some that coordinated. I didn’t use all these, but they gave me a place to start. I will say I was intentional on the fabric I chose. I always thought my first quilt would be for my daughter, but I think one day she will be happier to know that my first quilt went to a child that really needed it. I didn’t want to just use fabric I had around and didn’t like so I picked specific fabrics for specific reasons. (I think about things way too much!). I chose the fabric that was used as curtains in my oldest son’s nursery, fabric from my daughter’s quilt, fabric given to me as a gift and fabric I had bought for myself because I liked it so much.1009quilt-07

I will say it is much easier to work when kids are asleep and though I do take advantage of that time, I also try to be intentional about making certain things when they are awake. I wanted my boys to be a part of making this quilt so I included them in whatever way they wanted to help. Big Brother wanted to help lay out fabric then he wanted to test it to see if it would work good for Hop Scotch – since he knew the kid getting it would want to play Hop Scotch!1009quilt-08

Littlest Brother doesn’t understand all of it, but he loves his blankets and he knows we are making a blanket as a present for another kid to keep warm.1009quilt-09

The finished top part. Obviously I am not a quilter so I chose to do a VERY simple block pattern that I made up as I went.

I really like it…I want to keep it…I can’t wait to give it away!1009quilt-10

I attempted to get some pictures of Baby Sister on it. Her brothers tried to help me get her to look at the camera. Big Brother is blowing a kazoo while pointing to the camera. It didn’t work.1009quilt-12

He kept blowing it at her and she just closed her eyes ignoring him…cracked me up, frustrated him.

I wish you could hear the loud annoying sound to appreciate how funny her response is!1009quilt-13

Turns out I had to wait until the boys took naps to get a good shot or two.

1009quilt-21

Again here I go thinking too much, but thought went into these pictures as well. My grandmother (you have to click on that link to see how cute my grandparents are) snuck me this dress a while back. It was my grandpa’s as a newborn…in 1926!!! I’ve had it for a while trying to figure out what kind of picture to do with it for him. My grandma is a tremendous quilter…she is non-stop quilting and giving those quilts away. Since this is my first quilt and one that will be given away I thought it was a perfect backdrop to use my grandpa’s dress (not sure what to call it for baby boys). I love that this picture of her has pieces of two of her great-grandparents in it. Today is also my grandma’s birthday…Happy Birthday Grandma!

Surprise Grandpa…hope you like these! Prints are coming your way.1009quilt-20

Valerie - Love this post! Too cool that you won all the Amy Butler goodness, and I can’t wait to see eventually what you make with all of it. Your quilt top looks great — what a good reminder that I need to get on the ball and finish mine. And the beautiful shot of your baby made me smile, especially seeing the full-body shot that your grandpa will especially approve of. ;)

christina larsen - Wow. I love the fabric for the quilt and the pictures of your kiddos with the quilt. Good luck on completing it. I also love the patterns you won, congrats. It sounds like you mom will be helping you interpret them, but if you need help; I do know how to read a pattern.

Jeannette Swan - I don’t even know what to say. How amazing and touching!! I love the pictures and the process, you are simply amazing!!

Emily Beaty - I love that last one of Baby Sister in the dress, on the quilt. So special!!

Jenny Lynn - the last picture is precious.
i love the quilt and i definitely think all the thought that you put into it is awesome.

Tess S - what a beautiful quilt! it’s so lovely. i’m looking into some fabrics to make a quilt for my daughter, and you’ve inspired me to get moving on it!
I adore your sentiment.

carrie - Her patterns are pretty easy to follow. My mom has a quilt ministry here in town. She says they come together fast! Can’t wait to see them!

ashlee - your quilt is beautiful!!! and Amy’s patterns are fantastic! i love the new shirt/jacket/dress one…i just saw that one on her website:)

patti - what a beautiful first quilt! well done.

sheridan - such a thoughtful post and process to hear you go through! thank you for sharing and i LOVED the one of sister closing her eyes through the craziness of her brothers.

PamperingBeki - That fabric is YUMMY!
But baby girl is even yummier.

I’m a complete fabric ho and I can’t even sew. It’s pathetic!
Doesn’t stop me from buying it though. :)

amber - WOW gorgeous patterns! Greta prize win! Congrats!

Catherine - I love that second last photo so much. Love the story behind it too – just beautiful.

bopha - love the quilt, another talent to add to your reportoire (sp?).

christi - i love this post! your quilt is beautiful. i love all the headbands you put on your daughter … do you make them or buy them?

Meagan - Ashley, that is so special! I’m sure your grandparents are going to LOVE those pictures! Breese looks so beautiful against that quilt (which is looking awesome BTW!)! I have picked out some of the fabric for mine, but I really need to get going on it since it’s my first too…I’m going really simple also…

Jaimie - I so love that quilt! I wish I could do that or sew. At all. The kids are precious.

Ashlee Archibald - these are gorgeous pictures! :) And I clicked to see how cute your grandparents are and I started tearing up at the second picture. Best. picture. ever.

joyce & Ken - What a surprise. Had no idea that I once wore a dress. Sometimes when I view pictures of by beautiful great granddaughter, I sorta get choked up.

ashley - Hey Ashley! Can you tell me what the name of the yellow and gray fabric is? It is exactly what I’ve been looking for. Hope you can remember!

P.S. My name is Ashley Ann too. Smart moms, huh?

SnapShop {round 6}

Crazy to think this time last year I just tossing around the idea of stepping back from shooting sessions and begin doing some teaching…I also had no idea we were going to become a family of 6! Well, over the weekend I wrapped up the 6th and final SnapShop of the year. I have really enjoyed all aspects of SnapShops and look forward to more next year. I won’t be offering any more this year or early next, but watch out in the spring for new dates. I plan on doing several in the spring, summer and fall of 2010….I even have partnered with My Funky Camera for the 2010 SnapShops!
Here’s a few pics from our day. I am grateful to have a husband that truly makes it possible for me to do these. He manages all 4 kids and is our food coordinator for the day. He does an incredible job balancing it and supporting me. Thanks babe!

Since my daughter arrived, she has been put to work too. Quite a cute model

A little hands-on practice during the indoor teaching sessions.

I try to do a little bit of shooting at the first of each location, but then I try to get out of the way for the students. As a result I tend to take a lot of shoe pictures and other details simply because the models are looking elsewhere. I love both of these. The first is of the mom & daughter…1009snapshop-16

I love the kneehighs and school bus in the background…kind of rocker school girl to me1009snapshop-14

And my favorite shot of the day. She wanted to do an action shot and that sounded good to me.

Thanks K, B, & E – you guys did an incredible job modeling for us!

Leanne - I love all these photos! Amazing job! Where in the world can I find that cute stripey-polkadot with pom-pom scarf? It’s absolutely adorable!

AshleyAnn - Leanne – I have no idea where they got the scarf…it is super cute!

bopha - very cool models. can’t wait to see what you’re going to do with the funky camera, i’m asking for a cool strap for christmas.

Jeannette Swan - Awesome!!!! I wish my kids were that cooperative in pics! I’m asking for the strap for my birthday. But, had forgotten the website. Thanks for the reminder.

Jamie - This is very random and has nothing to do with this post, but I was wondering: Are you going to post pics of your “new” kitchen? I loved the backsplash and light fixture so I’d love to see it all! Just curious… :)

AshleyAnn - Jamie – Yes, I am going to post pictures, but the kitchen isn’t finished yet. I bought hardware to install on the drawers and cabinets, but haven’t had time to put it up. I also have stuff to hang on the walls…probably won’t finish it until Christmas Gathering! I will post pictures when it is done though!

Valerie - Thanks, Ashley, for an awesome day! Not only did I have an amazing time AND accomplish my goal of being able to finally shoot manually, but you also blessed me with the gift of a kid-free day with other great moms. Your teaching style was able to finally flip that switch and give me a lightbulb moment where everything about shooting manually made sense. I’m excited to get some more practice in and see what I can come up with. :)

ashlee - love the picture of the feet:) i cant WAIT to take one of your snap shops!

kelly hopson - Ashley, Great Pics and Great Times!!!! I was going to post some of mine on my blog but….after seeing yours maybe I shouldn’t HA!! Such a helpful course!!!

Tabitha - Thanks so much for the great class! I can’t wait to get started practicing.

Rachel - Great models! They are totally stylin’!

meredith - Ashley, The kids had a BLAST! (amazingly, even the boys) They were so sticky from the lollipops! :) Love your pics sooo much! I know the ladies learned so much from you.

Leanne, the scarf is by Little MissMatched. I got it at last years Christmas Gathering at The Church at BattleCreek in the Christmas store. We love it!

Meagan - Wow! Awesome photos!!! Beautiful models!

Wanda Little - I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE your pics! I have 3 beautiful granddaughters, and have been taking pictures since I was in the 4th grade! I definitely want to take your SNAPSHOP workshop in the spring—please let us know as soon as you have the dates sent. I have a great camera, but have never learned how to use the aperature, ISO, etc. I’m ready to move up a step in my camera-taking techniques–I’m excited about this!

a day in the life {the baby sister}

WARNING: This post may cause a strong urge to have a baby.

I love to watch her wake up. Baby yawns kill me.1009day-1

Big Brother likes to join her on the bed in the mornings. On this morning he relayed the story of my plane ride. I am now just as cool if not cooler than Indiana Jones in regards to adventure. It’s was fun to listen to how proud he was of me and how much watching me fly impacted him.1009day-2

Hanging out with her brothers in the morning…1009day-3

Nap time…and outfit #2.1009day-4

Nap time on the bed didn’t last long, she prefers that I hold her in the wrap. So we did a little crafting together.1009day-5

Enjoying a little afternoon lego play with Big Brother

1009day-9

Crying…and being comforted by tender hearted Big Brother1009day-10

Going for a walk…Littlest Brother pointing out her body parts. “mouth. nose. hair.”1009day-11

Back at home and enjoying the window view while sporting her ElleBow (see the link at the bottom of the page)…I love the handmade flower. (outfit #3)1009day-6

Getting a little mid-afternoon cuddle from Littlest Brother. Leg Warmers – my FAVORITE girl accessory.

I love how cute AND practical they are….and her chubby thighs are just too much in them!1009day-7

Falling asleep while I was trying to get some new pictures of her. Already bored with the camera.1009day-8

Finishing up the day in outfit #4 -  a dress made by my friend Lauren. She is shocked that I don’t enjoy washing all the clothes she spits up on or drools all over.1009day-12

I told her when she is bigger she has to do her own laundry.1009day-13

Her days are so different from Biggest Brother’s when he was a baby. Have I mentioned I love having a ‘big’ family? My cup overflows…so does my washing machine, dishwasher and trash cans :)

Alba - I’m done with two little boys, but she is so cute. I would love to have a baby girl, but … there are so many “but” that I can not think about it. All the pictures are as fantastic as always, but the one with Big Brother is so tender!

Emily Beaty - She is SO cute and has already grown SO much! I love her accessories – the headband, leg warmers, hat… adorable. I also love how her brothers interact with her!

lesley - love this post! I really like the one where she’s big eyed with her mouth open and the leg warmers are so cute!!

amanda torres - Love the post! She is SO adorable and so thankful for you. Families are one of God’s greatest gifts to us.

Miranda - I love this post! It does make me want a baby, but that already existed before I looked at you blog. Little baby girls are SO sweet! I agree having a big family is awesome!!

meg duerksen - watching a birth…then a friend telling me of her shocking surprise pregnancy…now you post this. not cool. my womb can’t take it. my poor husband can’t listen to me whine about it anymore. we can’t have anymore. but that doesn’t stop me from wanting it really bad.
she is doll.
love the legwarmers. :)

christina larsen - Absolutely precious.

Meagan - Can totally relate…to it all…We love our leg warmers too! They are the cutest!!!

Heather - Love this post! And I love all the snuggle time with her big brothers :)

Lisa - Everytime I see her I get that 2nd baby urge!!! Loving this blog post. What a life :-) Thank you for the ElleBows link – I just adore that picture.

Shanalea - I am always amazed by how fast my washer and dishwasher fill up. I take one day off and poof 3 loads appear. I will say though I would rather have a full washer and a full house rather than an empty one.

ashlee - oh my she is a doll!!!

steph anne - Aww. You have beautiful kids! Are you planning on having more kids?

Juliann Brenner - You’re right – these pics do make me want to have another (would be #4)…but then there are the NIGHTS, which make that first year so hard for me….

Jill R - That IS the life! I would love for someone to dress me in cute outfits all day and have 3 adorable boys at my beck and call!

Jeannette Swan - It doesn’t take much to make me want another one!!! Well, except the thought of more laundry than I have now – yikes! My washer and dryer never stop, it’s a wonder they don’t over heat.
She is beautiful!

Amnah - Oh my goodness… too cute!

carrie - Her lips are so kissable!!!!!

the inadvertent farmer - As a mom of 4 boys and 1 princess I must say those photos made my heart melt…Enjoy! Kim

Lauren Roberts - I love her in her dress! So sweet!

Lisa Johnson - oh my. This may just be my favorite post ever. What a sweetie!

kerry - i love the framed picture of the different sized shoes!
so much love from the brothers to little sister, simply heart melting:D

Melissa - what a doll and YES it makes me what to have another, but not the hubby!

Kara - Love the airplane picture! They will love that pic some day!

Jolie - oh stop with all the gorgeousness…you know, you aren’t helping the baby fever around here, any!!! She just looks utterly divine!

jennifer - Love your blog and LOVE your photography!!!

WHERE did you get the sling that you have your little one in??? Is it a moby wrap or like a moby wrap??? How do you like it??

I have a 4 month old son, who is starting to prefer being held and I need something like that!!!!

Thanks SO much!!
Jennifer

Mandy Metcalf - Oh my goodness she is such a doll! Such a photogenic little girl! Your family is beautiful! :)

AshleyAnn - Jennifer…it is from Etsy, seller name is “Loveyduds”. I think it is a lot like a moby wrap…I love it, but now that she is getting bigger I might start trying a simple sling.

Amber Dearman - I love these pics!! My favorite is the one in the chair with the orange stocking cap and the leg warmers…darling!!!

Trina - Love it. Pls tell me where the legwarmers are from – fantastic! my daughter needs some!

AshleyAnn - Trina, the legwarmers are from Target. I think they were about $2.99!

She left proof {Aleida’s Challenge}

For this post I went back to the year Biggest Brother was born to pull out just some simple candids of me with the kids. I purposely chose pictures that aren’t “great” photographs…just run of the mill shots. Most are of Biggest and Big Brother….I lost track of time looking at old pics. In fact the only one with Littlest Brother is the second on the top row, the only one with my daughter is the third on the bottom row. It is amazing how many of Big Brother look like Littlest Brother (like under the “mommy” circle)

Last week I mentioned I was speaking to a group of women in Glenpool…I also mentioned that I was excited about a project they were working on. Well, I had a great time with those ladies. They were gracious and hopefully they enjoyed what I shared – I am in no way a speaker. I think I did a lot of rambling. The project they are working on is called “She Left Proof”. Here is a brief summary from the flickr group dedicated to this…it is well worth your time to read it. The below is written by Emilie Ahren:

“Many scrapbookers knew Aleida Franklin. She was a wonderful wife and mother and a brilliant artist. I didn’t know Aleida personally, but she taught me something I will never forget.

She emailed me last year to tell me she loved my blog and to ask if I liked my short hair-cut. This lead to a series of emails which eventually led me to remark that I really loved how often she posted pictures of herself with her children on her blog. And she replied to me, “Have you ever seen a photograph of your own mother and thought to yourself how fat she looked? Or how she wasn’t wearing make-up? Or wasn’t dressed in a glamorous outfit?” Of course my answer was no.

She then responded with saying that she made it a goal to take a picture of herself with her children at least once every month. And that to use excuses about how we look, as women, is ridiculous, since our children will never care what we looked like, but only that we had physical evidence of the bond between mother and child.

Aleida tragically and unexpectedly passed away in an auto accident in September of 2008, leaving 2 small children and a grieving husband. After she passed I thought of how those children must feel to have those precious photographs. I have made it my personal goal to follow her wise suggestion and I try to take photos of myself with my children….double chins, make-up free, bed-head and all.

I invite Mothers everywhere to take Aleida’s Challenge. To photograph yourself with your children each and every month. And to post them here so that we can see Aleida’s legacy unfolding.”

Powerful. I love looking back at pictures of my mom – especially her LONG 70s hair. What a great challenge this is to moms (and dads) – to get over how we look in pictures and capture ourselves with our kids. So grab your camera, a tripod, a friend or a spouse and capture yourself with those important to you!

Courtney Connelly - Ash,
I checked your blog first thing when I got to work this morning. Thank you for the post, it was a reminder that I really needed today. -Court

Trinity - Great reminder….I love looking at pictures of me and my mother…you can see her love for me in her eyes and the way she holds me…..good reminder to leave that for my girls! Thanks! Good way to start out the day…being appreciative of what the Lord has given to me!

Jamie - Wow. Thank you for sharing this. I tend to think that my kids would be embarrassed of me years down the road when they look at pics of us bc I rarely have on anything but comfy mom clothes and no makeup; I don’t want them to think I never looked “pretty” so I just avoid the camera altogether and wait for a day that I am a little fixed up — and that never happens. BUT this post has really changed my life. You are so, so right. I absolutely have to start making a point to get in pics with my babies no matter what. I feel like crying now over so much wasted time. This has been a total eye-opener. Thanks for sharing.

griswold fun - That’s powerful! I don’t have kids but totally agree… I am emailing your page to my friends who do have kids already!

meg duerksen - oh i totally crying.
it’s so true….my mom always says “i look awful” in every picture of us together and i have never thought that when i see them. she just looks like my mom!

Alba - thanks for the post! it makes me think about how fragile life is. i’ll also email this post to my friends.

Jill J - This was touching to read yesterday. And SO TRUE! Thanks for this. I gave myself an assignment of getting into pictures with my kids this weekend. I just love reading your blog… So inspirational and beautiful.

stephanie - that’s such a sad story! thanks for sharing- i’m going to make it a point to take more pics of me with her, even though i usually look horrible!!

Kenna S - What a precious reminder and tribute. Thanks for sharing.

Tammy - Beautiful. I just joined.

julie - Thank you Ashley. This is so real. So true. I have maybe ten total pictures of my girls and I. Out of the thousands on my computer. That is not okay. It will change.
P.S. you are super adorable in all of your pics!

Alison R - Wow! What a beautiful post. I am new to your blog and just checking it out. I have to leave a comment on this though. You have just inspired me. I click pictures of my children as often as possible but cannot say that I have very many of me with them. I am going to have to remedy that situation. Thank you so much! I love your blog already and your pics are amazing!

Lori McDonough - Thank you for this. I am soooooo going to share this on my blog with my readers. I have never ever thought of it this way, but am now completely inspired by it. I love my mom and cherish every picture of her and I together. I owe it to my kids to do this.

sara - this is such a touching story. thank you for sharing it. i have been avoiding getting in any pictures & started changing my ways today! thank you for sharing this.

Meredith - Thank you so much for sharing this story and your challenge. I accept! There IS a big hole in my photo journals….one that I’ve accidentally put there. I keep forgetting to include myself in the family photos. Thanks for the reminder.

jen@odbt - This is why I post weekly in a “where’s mom” photo challenge. I don’t have any pics of my mom in my childhood and I can’t remember what she looked like back then.

DIY {leaf alphabet}

I saw this photo a while back on One Pretty Thing and knew I wanted to make several for our house. You can find the tutorial here. I love how simple it is. So I had a great plan to take the boys to the park and use child labor to gather tons of acorns. I bribed them by saying we were going to go feed the ducks…which we did.acornwreath1009leaves-1

After feeding the ducks I handed them 2 pails and got them excited to fill them with as many acorns as we could find. Turns out the acorns were still hanging from the branches, so I came up with Plan B on the spot. We gathered leaves….1009leaves-2

Of course you can’t gather leaves without running and diving in them too…1009leaves-3

Or without flipping into them….1009leaves-4

Or without getting major grass stains on 1 of your 2 pairs of school pants…1009leaves-5

Later that night I set out the leaves, glue and a big sheet of paper to make our version of ABC cards I saw on Martha Stewart.1009leaves-6

Biggest Brother loves to read and write, so this was perfect for him.1009leaves-7

His dad won with the best design…a cricket. Biggest Brother took his paper to school the next day to show his teacher. He thought it was super fun…this is a great indoor activity to pass time in the horrible frigid below 60 weather….I still plan on making that wreath.1009leaves-8

Kari - What a neat idea!!

Jeannette Swan - Wonderful stuff!! I love the wreath, I had my boys collect acorns so I could use them in vases for decoration, but the wreath would be amazing. The leaf stuff is great too. Last year, Camden had to create something like that for school with leaves, ours was a turkey…it turned out good, but was a lot of work. And, as for the grass stains, I understand that too, when it got cool, I realized Camden only had one pair of school pants that fit and yesterday they came home covered in grass stains. We are going shopping tonight for more, I can’t keep washing them every night!!

the inadvertent farmer - We’re in the middle of doing a leaf alphabet also…gotta love Martha! The acorn wreath is wonderful. But I must say it is the pictures of your kiddos that made me smile. Enjoy this season with your little ones! Kim

Lisa - so fun! I can’t tell you how much I miss having little ones. You are doing such a great job soaking up the moments with your children. They grow up too fast! Thankfully, my teenagers still enjoy jumping into leaf piles =)

PamperingBeki - Those wreaths are so cute!
I saw one the other day made of candy corn and loved it too.

Ashley, will you email me? I have a question (not photography related) and the contact link at the top isn’t working for me.

Thanks! :)

Holly - Just beware that often (maybe always?) acorns have little worms in them. We learned that the hard way after gathering them at the park and bringing them home last fall. It was gross.

dana - VERY cool (and fun) idea. I may have to try this!
btw, your blog is one my new favorites. I subscribe to a lot of “photography blogs” but yours falls in a category beyond that. Not only are you photos amazing and beautiful to look at…but you also showcase cool craft ideas, funny humor, and you blog about your every day life (instead of only posting photo sessions with clients, etc).
I really love it when a post from your blog pops up on my Google Reader! Thanks for sharing!

Tobia - Okay, I just stumbled here from across the wide web and found a few great ideas and a great blog. Keep up the good work. Love the Leaf alphabet idea. May have to try some soon with my little critters at home :) Thanks and cheers to fun at home and great photos to document it! Tobia

My son…The Goat Whisperer

I’m a spring and summer girl, but each fall I begin to think I like the fall. Well, I do actually like the fall – at least when the low is above 60. I like how cute my boys look in jeans and clothes…as opposed to going shirtless in swimtrunks all summer long. They look cute dressed. But the pile of laundry from all those fall clothes is not so cute.

We ventured over to grandpa’s ‘farm’….1009goats-1

Biggest Brother protected me from the goats with Grandma’s stick.

If it had been summer I would have let him strip down to his undies and fully enjoy all that great mud. Another downfall of cold weather – can’t hose them off.

Always climbing on something.1009goats-2

The real reason we were tromping around was to find the baby goats. If this ’smile and say cheese’ picture was the only one I had of Big Brother with the goats I would have missed pretty much the whole story of his time there.1009goats-3

I would have missed his tender, tender heart towards this baby goat.1009goats-4

I would have missed the joy of when Grandpa placed the goat in his arms and the contentment he had just cuddling it.1009goats-5

I didn’t know baby goats were so cute.1009goats-6

I also would have missed the way his little heart broke when that baby goat was crying “MAAAA, MAAAA” for its mommy.

(Yes, I am making that goat noise aloud as I type :) )1009goats-7

And I would have missed him singing, “It’s okay baby goat, I have you. It’s okay.” And the goat calming down in the arms of my son, The Goat Whisperer.1009goats-8

He cried the first time I told him he couldn’t bring the baby goat home. I asked him where it would sleep. He said, “In my bed cuddled with me.” The other times he has gone to visit the babies they have been asleep in the hay. He climbs up and lays down with them…and would stay there for hours if I let him. I asked him if the baby goat was cuter than his baby sister. He said “Yes, the baby goat is cuter because it is smaller.” Gonna have to work on that.

Photo Tip: Don’t get so caught up in trying to get your kids to look and smile at the camera….you might just miss the best pictures.

bopha - how sweet, i think he needs a goat at home.

lesley - Love the photos! Looks like you guys had a good time and looks like Hud needs a goat. Goat whisperer, love it.

Trinity - Ashley, in the first picture, what did you do post-processing to get that effect? Just curious. Great pictures. You have a lot of patience to wait for the right moment to click. Your a great teacher….I love the tips!

rachel denbow - Such a precious set of images and I’m sure even better memories for your son! Does everyone want a baby goat now? I’m thinking I do.

the inadvertent farmer - Absolutely priceless…brought tears to my eyes. Then again I’m a sucker for kids with animals! Thanks for sharing, Kim

Sophie - Oh my goodness. Your son and that goat are the best thing since Batman and Robin.

So adorable!

(Batman and Robin weren’t adorable but you catch my drift…)

meg duerksen - annie’s preschool usually has someone bring in a baby goat every year and it kills me not to bring home with me. i have this crazy urge to go buy a goat afterwards. they really are adorable. i think it’s the little wobbly legs. :)

Jill J - Boy, isn’t your last statement the truth! Every time we go somewhere with my mom, she is always stopping the fun to have us turn around and smile… so contrived!

On a lighter note, :) the baby goat photos were so precious! And I actually said “MAAA MAAA” out loud too. No, not really, but I could see myself doing it if I were writing it. He he!

Meagan - Oh, so precious!!!

Meagan - Thanks for the link to that craft blog, BTW! Love it!

Rebekah Jean - That is so sweet…and you are so right! There is so much more meaning behind photos when you go past the ’say cheese’ part. What a great post this is! It should go in the best Ashley Ann posts hall of fame. :)

Shannon Phillips - Oh man! Your boys are just so stinkin CUTE!!! I really needed some cheering up today. Thanks for making me smile!
