boy time…messing with a mad mom

Originally posted 09.17.09

We have lots of crawdads in our yard. They are usually near creeks, but we are pretty confident there are some underground streams in our yard. I have never seen a live one at our house, only their shells. Chris and the boys catch them all the time. I came home the other night and Chris got out the camera to show me a few pictures he had taken. Here’s the first one. He asked me why the crawdad was so angry.

Could it be the two boys messing with her?

Maybe it was the boys. Or maybe it was the boys messing with her while she was so ‘pregnant’, he said. What!? I asked….

A closer look…

Yep, that grossed me out too. I think I might have screamed actually. No wonder she was up in arms. Who wants to be carrying that many babies and picked on by two boys! She should have got them with those claws, I would have understood.

For my friend who read the blog and learned that Sunflower seeds come from Sunflowers…this can be another science lesson. Crawdads come from Crawdads.:)

christina larsen - I posted a comment on the original, and can’t remember verbatim what I wrote, but I think it had something to do with; GROSS, I didn’t know that’s where a crawdad carries their babies.

Amber - I’m pretty sure that last picture will give me nightmares tonight. It’s like one of those really bad sci-fi movies. “Attack of the Pregnant Crawdad”…yep, definitely nightmares.

Kara - I agree with Amber…nightmares tonight!

Aunt Sandy - I love these pics. David would give anything to have these in our back yard. He’s talked about doing a small pond in the back to grow them, so, if you ever need to get rid of a FEW, let him know. The pic of the boys in the background is “so boys”.

Lauren Roberts - Oh, brings back childhood memories of my brothers and I.

Dulcy White - What wonderful photos of the “mad mom”. I grew up in South Louisiana eating crawfish at every possible chance and have never seen a mother crawfish carrying her babies like this.

Your blog was recommended to me by Tracey Blyth Briggs. My daughters and I enjoy each post. Don’t worry, we will be patient and wait on your host company!

Blessings to you and your beautiful family!

bopha - pretty sure my original comment was “eeewwwww” and it all came back when i looked at again.

Shanalea - I have to say that this is pretty disgusting.

Lesley - oh wow, that’s really gross, but really cool shot!

Georgia Davis - try not to think about her getting into your house and then having all of those babies…oh my

meg duerksen - i think i said “what?! huh? what is going on in that shot?” how are baby crawdads produced? how are they born? are those born and she is holding them or is there some clear sack or something holding them in? i mean seriously what is going on?!!!
