SnapShop {Sept. 09 class}

Over the weekend I held the first fall SnapShop. I usually take more pictures of the attendees, but I didn’t get many this round. This was also the first SnapShop that I was not pregnant and as a result we had the cutest baby model for the indoor practice shoot…

For our outdoor practice shoot we had a group of 4 best friends…and a really handsome boy.

Here are some of mine from the day. It is always so hard for me to get shots because I am running around trying to help everyone, but I got a few I like and hopefully the girls’ moms will like! I have been asked a lot about post processing. Formerly (as in when I was doing lots of sessions) I didn’t have the time to play with processing very much. Now that my schedule is a bit more free I have started playing around with Photoshop more. All of the pictures below were processed using actions…either my own, Totally Rad, or Kubota action sets. Most of the pictures have several actions on them. One of these days I’ll do a post of ‘before’ and ‘after’ shots in regards to processing…onto the pictures.

I would like to say I totally understand the concept of arranged marriages…I LOVE ALL THESE GIRLS!

Biggest Brother posed with the girls on several shots, hopefully some of the attendees got some cute ones of that. I will post some of their pictures next week…

SnapShop Girls: If you noticed I tried to keep my aperture setting at f/2.8 the entire time so you could look at these and tell the difference that distance from your subject makes when dealing with aperture. Also, remember I did some processing on these so my colors may not look like yours…and every camera and lens is going to respond to lighting conditions differently.

Susan - Great pics- LOVED the class! Thanks for everything!

chrissy - So cute! I so would love to go to a class of yours… any chance of having one in New Hampshire? ;)

the inadvertent farmer - Sitting here with the biggest smile on my face…there is something magical about children and you perfectly captured it! Completely digging the one of the feet in action, Kim

bopha - those are great pics and the girls are so cute. I can’t wait to see how the ones of baby breese turned out.

Casey - You always take such gorgeous photos! I wish I lived close to you so I could participate in your class

Lindsey P - You are such a gifted photographer! I found your site by accident and now I’m hooked! Have you been to thepioneerwoman.com? She has a lot of free action sets for Photoshop.

curse of the unloved tripod

When I took an Intro to Photography course my professor said one thing every photographer needs and will use ALL THE TIME is a tripod. I am a bad student. Once a year I drag my tripod out to get a family picture…the kind where I am running back and forth from behind the camera to my family and we wait for the flashing countdown. Captures what we look like, but that is about it. Chris and I have never had professional portraits (a couple of friends shot our wedding – and did an awesome job) and I wanted to capture our family before we added another girl. (Remember, back then I was having major issues with another girl coming into my family :) ). So last March/April we had family portraits scheduled with my friend Shannon.  It was the day of and I was on my way to get my hair fixed and was trying to be positive despite it was raining so hard I could barely see to drive. Needless to say Shannon and I talked and canceled…and I even got my hair appt. rescheduled. Well round two comes along…RAIN AGAIN. We rescheduled. Round three…RAIN AGAIN. After that I was so fully pregnant I wasn’t up for doing it until after the baby arrived. So round four is scheduled for this Thursday…can you believe this????
weather

Seriously…SERIOUSLY!!!!!

I call it The Curse of the Unloved Tripod.

On a side note, I’ve gotten a lot of emails about my kitchen remodel. I have a few things to finish before I want to post pictures. One big question has been the new wall color…oddly enough it is called “Stillness”. I don’t remember the brand, I found it at Lowe’s in the section of tinted whites, but I had it mixed somewhere else. I’ll post more pictures of it all later. It really is an oxymoron that my kitchen is painted a color by that name :)

Shannon Phillips - REALLY this is getting just silly! I am going to have a little talk with God and tell him we need to make some sort of deal about the next day we pick so that it doesn’t rain. I love you girl! It will happen sometime I promise!

Lacey McKay - Ha! That is crazy! But I believe it! I haven’t been very busy this fall, but I figure it’s a blessing in disguise because I would probably have to cancel a lot due to weather anyway.

Liz - Every other day this week is supposed to be beautiful! That is the kind of luck that I usually have! You never know because the weatherman aren’t always right so hopefully they will be wrong!

Lacey - Tremendous photos, I spent far too long looking at them!,

Our vacation

Now wasn’t that a great picture to start your Monday off with? I think things are finally back up and running correctly with my hosting company…so I will share some vacation pictures. I debated posting all these…I kept thinking of other blogs that would post this many and other blogs that would never post personal vacation pictures…and so on and so on. Don’t you hate getting caught in the comparison game? Maybe no one else ever struggle with it, but it is easy for me to get distracted by watching other people.  Wow…none of that relates to my vacation! Here’s some of my favorite pics anyways!

Baby sister in the wrap…this is the view I had 75% of our vacation.

Our vacation was in a little cabin on at a campground by the lake. During the summer the cabins and grounds are filled with kids and teenagers there for summer camp. Part of the summer camp experience is a ropes course. For my boys it was an Indiana Jones wonderland.

Yeah, it’s pretty nice to have boys…even when they have tree mold down the front of their shirts.

On the campgrounds they have an old plane held up in the air by metal stands. You can climb up inside and it kind of looks like you are flying. For you Lost fans…all I could think while I was inside was “I feel like Charlie. If I find any ceramic Mary statues I will know I am in trouble.” Chris told me that was morbid – espcially since Baby Sister was tied to me in the baby wrap.

Recently his sister was crying in the car. He leaned forward and said, “Please STOP. I don’t want to hear your whining anymore!”

He surely didn’t say that because he hears it several times a day…my kids never whine or pout.

So I attempted a picture of all 4…not happening so much.

Would be much better if their sister could at least sit verses lay in a blanket on the dock.

Welcome to the Gun Show.

Shirts are way overrated.

This is his ‘9 months pregnant and my back is killing me’ pose. He learned that one from me.

We drove around the lake just to see what was there. We saw a sandy beach and I asked the boys if they wanted to get out…we had one towel (already dirty), no swimsuits, no change of clothes. Evidently I wasn’t thinking…sand + my boys = sand fights. It’s kind of like 2+2=4.

The girls stayed out of the fight. (I can say ‘girls’ how funny is that!)

It’s all fun and games until someone gets sand in their eyes.

The babies were cleaned, the big brothers had to use great self control to fight the urge to get Mommy and Littlest Brother sandy again.

Our vacation. It was a boy outdoor wonderland…dirty, rainy, muddy, rustic, messy. No cell phone coverage, no internet, no computers. I’d say it was a peaceful stay at a cabin by the lake, but I have 4 small children…it was a stay at a cabin by the lake :) And we loved it.

Shannon Phillips - Ashley, I am so glad that you posted ALL of these! I get stuck in the comparing game all of the time. Why do we do that?

amanda torres - I’m so glad you went with the ‘you’ blog and posted your vacation pictures. Loved them all. I have to say I’m a little sucker for Littlest Bro’s tummy! I LOVE IT! Preggo pic cute. Also loved the pic of the boys standing up on the doc and baby sis laying there. Your boys faces say it all. Glad you had a great time.

Rachel - Great pics as usual!!! Question for you and your faithful blog followers out there…do you know of any good places to take engagement pictures in Oklahoma City?

christina larsen - I love the ‘9mo pregnant pose’ that cracked me up. All great photos. Thanks for sharing. BTW, I don’t think you shared too many.

Aunt Sandy - I have to say my fav is the pic of all 4 and Breese’s tongue is out. Great pics and what a great family you have.

Meagan - Those are great pictures! I love the one of the boys on the tires! It looks like each one of them is in his own little world! Breese is just precious! Is your wrap a loveydud off of etsy?

AshleyAnn - Rachel…I am not familiar with OKC, but I would bet the Paseo district and just about anywhere downtown would be great spots for a session.

Meagan…yep, it is a Loveydud. I had it for my youngest son and replaced the fabric on the front for my daughter. You won’t see that fabric in her store.

bopha - those are great pictures. love the one of “pregnant” rett!

Meagan - So, I guess you love it?! I’ve been looking at them since March and still haven’t bought one! I really want one, although techinically I don’t need one since I already have a sling and an AngelPack (which is also awesome!)! It just looks so comfy!

Sarah - My Monday is complete! My favorite picture is the one with all the kids and she’s sticking out her tongue. Too cute!

Mandy B - Tell Chris – one person’s “morbid” is another person’s “creative”…great pictures Ash!! I love seeing pretty blankets in with all the dirt!

Lisa - ok, these pictures are beyond fabulous!!! i love them!

heather - you live in oklahoma? you make it look so magical and enchanted!! help!! l just moved to norman from nyc and am dying, but thru your eyes this places looks transformed……….

Emily Beaty - How fun! I love the pregnant image… so funny! I love how you narrated the vacation, too. :)

Guess who really likes her mommy? We are out of the phase where I have to make tons of faces and noises to get one little smile…we are now in the phase where she can just lock eyes with me and that is enough for a smile. I love it. I LOVE IT.

There are still server/hosting issues I am dealing with…is anyone still getting error messages when emailing me?

Amy - She is so gorgeous!!!

Lori Danelle - I adored that age! All you had to do was walk in the room and you’d get the biggest smile and laugh—like you were the most important person to her ever and she had been waiting her whole day for you to walk through that door—even if you’d only been gone 5 minutes!!!

She’s absolutely stunning. :)

Shannon Phillips - She is a gem! She looks oh so snugly in these.

amanda torres - precious!

Casey - how sweet :)

christina larsen - Love baby smiles.

Mandy B - How is it that she keeps changing so much? She looks a lot like Corbett in that middle picture. She is so sweet!!

rachel denbow - What a beauty!

all spotted and dirty {camera sensor photo tip}

909sensor-02909sensor-03909sensor-04Well I am STILL having server issues….emails still with error codes and still unable to upload. My free Photobucket account is getting full, so I am waiting to post vacation pictures until my hosting company gets my account back up. So until that wonderful day, I’ll just wait for big photo posts…

I shoot fully manual 99.9% of the time. I also tend to shoot wide open (small f-stop #, open aperture). Shooting at a small f-stop number means that dirt on my sensor doesn’t always show up. Well during our vacation the boys were playing in full sun and my light meter was acting funny so I switched to full automatic. When I got my pics on my computer and looked through them I realized just how nasty dirty my sensor is. How did I know this? Well if you look at the pictures below you will see spots in the same location on every photo…see below:

909sensor-01

Every time you change your lens on a dslr camera you let dust into the camera, which can settle on the sensor. Some people avoid this by never changing lenses. I change my lenses all the time. I try to be fast and point my camera down when changing lenses, but dust inevitably will still get in. I clean my sensor myself because it gets expensive at a camera store…though I am trying to get into the habit of taking my camera in for a professional cleaning once a year. You can find info for cleaning your sensor by doing a Google search. Many of the new dslr cameras come with built-in automatic sensor cleaning. Here’s some steps for checking how dirty your sensor is:

1. Set the aperture to f/16 or larger

2. Take a picture of something plain white (ceiling, wall, posterboard). You might need your flash on for this.

3. Look for grey spots…that is probably dust on your sensor

Just curious…are posts like this helpful?

Ryan - Of course they are! :)

Serena Lowe - I love post like this. I was just wondering how often I shound take my camera in to be cleaned. I try to change my lens fast and carefully, but I know those little particles can creap in there! Thanks for the tip….!

meg duerksen - i assumed the spots would from my lens…interesting.
yes. helpful.
thanks.

Nikki - I am a “lurker” on your blog, but I have seen the issues you have been having with your server. I am a website designer and I use godaddy.com to host every site. In 8 years we have never had an issue. Another thought – use flickr.com. When you upload photos you can send them directly to your blog pre-formatted. It is so easy, and a great place to store your photos. E-mail me if you need any assistance, always happy to help out. My husband, Mickel, says he was your intern in youth group. He is friends with John. I stumbled on your blog through a blog when you posted your “slat” daybed. Anyway, let me know if I can help. It is crazy that they have left you hanging so long!

jo - very helpful, thank you so much!

Rachel - Definitely helpful….It’s also really helpful when you show us what settings you took your pics on.

Trinity - Posts like this are SO VERY HELPFUL! I love getting tips from you.

Angie - Very helpful! I love your tips!

Stacey Zahn - SO HELPFUL!!! Thanks so much!

Our vacation pt.1 {Avoiding ’say cheese’…and faces}

909vac1-01

The photo above is my favorite one out all of all the 100s I took on our vacation. It sums up Littlest Brother and our vacation to me.  His sole objective in life right now is to play with his brothers and do what they do.  If it is playing ping pong he doesn’t let a little thing like being shorter than the table stop him.

As I thought about this picture and how much I love it, I also thought how often we miss pictures like this because we get so focused on faces. So, I thought I’d do a post about our vacation from that perspective. I have other pics with faces I’ll share later.

A sans-face version of the story of our vacation:

=909vac1-02

She basically lives in this wrap, so why not hike in the cold rain in it too?

909vac1-03909vac1-04909vac1-05

That is an entire Indiana Jones story board…no he hasn’t seen the movie, only the LEGO wii version.

909vac1-06909vac1-07909vac1-08909vac1-09909vac1-10

If I only look at this picture I can dream we were back living in Hawaii…instead of a sandy Oklahoma lake beach…

909vac1-11

I wonder at what age my boy’s feet will stop being so cute to me? Probably when they get hairy toes.

909vac1-12

That is a real caterpillar crawling on the LEGO man, not a LEGO size coon-skin hat.

909vac1-13

Do you think my daughter will have an obsession with all things creepy and crawly too? I hope not, I need someone on my team.

909vac1-14

Look closely and you will see Indiana Jones running through the Temple of Doom

Jeannette Swan - What a great story these pictures tell! Love it!

keely steger - Great pictures! I always get flack from my family when I take “artsy” photos and cut off my boys’ heads or focus on something else- so I’ll send them your way and you can explain the reasoning! ;)

bopha - those are my favorite kind of pics, your pictures are awesome as always!

Becca - What an adorable/great post and idea! I love everything about it!

Amy - I love your wrap!!! Is it a woven? (I loved my moby but once E hit about 15 pounds, it was just too stretchy and we were delegated to the mei tai only.) Where did you get it? I must know for whenever I get pregnant again! :)

Rachel - I love that ping pong picture. Looks like a great vacation….creepy crawlies, legos, temple of doom…..a little (and big) boy paradise. Let me know when little sister is ready to go to the spa….I’m totally in on that vacation! :)

grace - hi ashley!

i’m trying to contact you about featuring your before & after project in a book i’m working on. could you drop me a line when you get a chance? i tried your email but it bounced back…

elisa - I mean really….how do you come up with such a creative way to take pictures? Love your blog. Have a great day.

DIY {Anthropolgie Inspired Pendant Light}

Poor Chris…he has watched me for the last week as I’ve dealt with the server/hosting issues. Tonight he came home and I was still unable to upload photos and had not heard a thing from the company (I am choosing to take the high road right now and not name them…that is not what this blog is about). Anyway, Chris suggested I look into free image hosting for the time being until my account is back to normal. So I signed up for a PhotoBucket account – which was super easy. So thank you PhotoBucket – I can post again!

I’m still working on details for the kitchen. I wanted a new light fixture and saw these online at Anthropologie. I loved the wire look, but hated the pricetag and they were too small. So I decided I’d make my own.

909anthrolight

I headed to Lowes and bought a spool of wire and tried forming one…it wasn’t working so well for me. In the midst of trying to decide how to get the wire to work I found myself rocking my daughter in her room. As we rocked I looked down and noticed the BLACK WIRE BASKET holding her toys (see it in the bottom right corner of the pic below). Bingo! Along with the basket I bought some spray paint, a metal outlet cover (to connect to the pendant) and a pendant light.
909light-1

Step 1: Cut off basket handles and bottom middle wire (to center pendant)

Step 2: Spray paint basket and outlet cover. My basket had a bit of red on it.

Step 3: Adhere outlet cover to bottom inside of basket. I used Liquid Nails, but any strong glue would work. Since the outlet cover is on the inside of the basket the glue will not be used for strength just keeping the cover and basket in place.

909light-2

Step 4: Turn basket over for glue to dry

Step 5: Add weight on top of outlet cover while glue drys

Step 6: Spray paint it all

909light-3

Step 7: Connect it to the pendant light (which is already hanging…I don’t have instructions for that. You can follow the ones that come with the light)

Ta Da….my ‘Big Lots budget’ Anthropologie light :)

I can now no longer upload photos…what is a blog without photos?! Someday I’ll look back at this ordeal and laugh. No, actually I won’t, but it sounds good to say :) I have an ‘Anthropolgie – Inspired’ DIY project ready to post. So, if things get cleared up today I will post it later today.

Also, it seems like everyone is getting an error message when emailing me. I do seem to be getting the emails despite the error code you get. If it is urgent, leave me a comment in the field below and I will contact you with an alternative email……

boy time…messing with a mad mom

Originally posted 09.17.09

We have lots of crawdads in our yard. They are usually near creeks, but we are pretty confident there are some underground streams in our yard. I have never seen a live one at our house, only their shells. Chris and the boys catch them all the time. I came home the other night and Chris got out the camera to show me a few pictures he had taken. Here’s the first one. He asked me why the crawdad was so angry.

Could it be the two boys messing with her?

Maybe it was the boys. Or maybe it was the boys messing with her while she was so ‘pregnant’, he said. What!? I asked….

A closer look…

Yep, that grossed me out too. I think I might have screamed actually. No wonder she was up in arms. Who wants to be carrying that many babies and picked on by two boys! She should have got them with those claws, I would have understood.

For my friend who read the blog and learned that Sunflower seeds come from Sunflowers…this can be another science lesson. Crawdads come from Crawdads. :)

christina larsen - I posted a comment on the original, and can’t remember verbatim what I wrote, but I think it had something to do with; GROSS, I didn’t know that’s where a crawdad carries their babies.

Amber - I’m pretty sure that last picture will give me nightmares tonight. It’s like one of those really bad sci-fi movies. “Attack of the Pregnant Crawdad”…yep, definitely nightmares.

Kara - I agree with Amber…nightmares tonight!

Aunt Sandy - I love these pics. David would give anything to have these in our back yard. He’s talked about doing a small pond in the back to grow them, so, if you ever need to get rid of a FEW, let him know. The pic of the boys in the background is “so boys”.

Lauren Roberts - Oh, brings back childhood memories of my brothers and I.

Dulcy White - What wonderful photos of the “mad mom”. I grew up in South Louisiana eating crawfish at every possible chance and have never seen a mother crawfish carrying her babies like this.

Your blog was recommended to me by Tracey Blyth Briggs. My daughters and I enjoy each post. Don’t worry, we will be patient and wait on your host company!

Blessings to you and your beautiful family!

bopha - pretty sure my original comment was “eeewwwww” and it all came back when i looked at again.

Shanalea - I have to say that this is pretty disgusting.

Lesley - oh wow, that’s really gross, but really cool shot!

Georgia Davis - try not to think about her getting into your house and then having all of those babies…oh my

meg duerksen - i think i said “what?! huh? what is going on in that shot?” how are baby crawdads produced? how are they born? are those born and she is holding them or is there some clear sack or something holding them in? i mean seriously what is going on?!!!
:)

tummy time {a down hill progression}

Originally posted 09.16.09

For those of you that read this blog and do not have kids…”tummy time” is a period during the day that you encourage a babies to spend time on their tummies to help with muscle development and so on. Some babies love tummy time. Some hate it. Some love it and then hate it – like my daughter for instance. We were in her room and I got out the boppy (a C-shaped) pillow for a little “tummy time”….
