I love shopping for school supplies. I love the list and checking things off. I love the colors. I love the creative plethora of goodness. I was excited to share my love for school supply shopping with Big & Biggest Brother this year….they were not so fond of my love. I made it up to them with a date at Braums on the way home.

This just makes me happy. I could have shelves upon shelves in my house with this goodness.

As much fun as I had shopping, now I am a bit sad over the reason for all those supplies….
(I did not write this poem, the author is unknown and I modified it to “he” instead of “she”)
He started school this morning,
And he seemed so very small.
As I walked there beside him
In the Kindergarten hall.
And as he took his place beside
the others in the class,
I realized how all too soon
Those first few years can pass.
Remembering, I saw him as
He first learned how to walk.
The words that we alone made out
When he began to talk.
This little boy so much absorbed
In learning how to write.
It seems as though he must have grown
To boyhood overnight.
My eyes were blurred but hastily
I brushed the tears away
Lest by some word or sign of mine
I mar his first big day.
Oh how I longed to stay with him
And keep him by the hand
To lead him through the places
That he couldn’t understand.
And something closely kin to fear
Was mingled with my pride.
I knew he would no longer be
A baby by my side.
But he must have his chance to live,
To work his problems out,
The privilege to grow and learn
What life is all about.
And I must share my little boy
With friends and work and play;
He’s not a baby anymore –
He’s in Kindergarten today.
Biggest Brother a few months old….

amanda torres - Ohhhh…I am already sad for the day mine start Kindergarten. Exciting for them. All the new experiences. New friends. But a part of me gone for a large portion of the day brings some tears.
Jeannette Swan - You have me crying here!! I have sent 2 to kindergarten so far and it is hard for Mommy, but a great experience for the kids. My biggest baby starts 4th grade tomorrow, I’ve already been thinking…only 2 more years of elementary, how time flies. On a lighter note, I have to say that shopping for school supplies is one of my least favorite things to do, I love the stuff, but not the process of finding it all. The last few years I have just ordered a kit for my older children, no excitement there, but no stress either.
Happy first day of Kindergarden, C.
lesley - Oh man, I knew I should have waited to check your blog today till after work – or at least not put on eye makeup this morning! That was so sad. Congrats to my oldest nephew on such a big day!!!
Carol - I know exactly how you feel. I felt the same way the day you started school. It is happy and sad emotions at the same time.
Stephanie May* - I was doing so good this morning until I read this! My oldest son Gavin started 1st grade today. It felt so strange to leave him in that classroom and know that I won’t see him again until 3:15.
But, I have my two daughters here to keep me busy….
Lisa - Oh! I don’t know how I’m going to send my little girl off to school! This is such a beautiful post!
bopha - wow, it chokes me up just thinking about it, kindergarten, marraige…hope that you make it through. did you change your mind on the home school?
stephanie - that poem is beautiful…it truly captures all the emotions that we go through….I’m already dreading that day in a way, because i want to keep my baby a baby for a long time….She’s only 8 months old but i’m thinking WAAAY ahead!
Julia Leinen - Don’t forget to donate any extra school supplies to Safe Harbor! You can drop them off at the Pointe on Sunday. This past Tuesday, we served 155 people and gave out ALL of the school supplies that have been donated so far. You should have seen their sweet faces- they were so grateful and the kids were delighted! It was A.M.A.Z.I.N.G.!! And 2 young Mom’s who just came in for school supplies ended up giving their lives to Christ. Cannot beat that! God is Good!
Ayesha Riaz - i still have to live this yet i mean she starts school next summer and im slightly scared ohhhhh shes getting big not fun at all
melanie - You really are the only person I know who would set out all the school supplies, make them look festive simply be how they’re displayed, and take a picture of it! Love you! AND I can’t believe he’s in kindergarten already!!
Denise - My first Kindergartener started HIGH SCHOOL today!!! Time goes by so fast I just hug and kiss as much as I can no matter how old they are—in 4 years my first will be off to college and I will just have to muwaaahh over the phone. Gotta go I’m crying!!
becky - I will have a 1st and 3rd grader this year but I still feel the same emotions when my oldest started kindergarten. So exciting but it goes by so fast!
Jessica McCart - So inspired right now.
