when it’s okay to eat yellow snow {bringing the outdoors in}

Earlier this week when I posted our adventures in the snow, Susie left a comment with the idea of bringing the snow in. Thanks Susie! We tried it out. Biggest Brother wasn’t much of a fan, but the other 2 sure were. It kept the 20 month old busy for nearly an hour! That is no small feat. He kept smiling at me, “Snow. Snow. Snow.” Of course, the Star Wars Lego men found their way into the tub.
1.10tub-

When they started getting bored I introduced water bottles with colored water (food coloring). That bought me another 20 minutes!1.10tub--21.10tub--3

Yes, you can eat the yellow snow.1.10tub--4

I don’t know what the food coloring would do to grout, so be aware of that. There are tons of other things you could add to it…maybe bury treasures to find. The clean up was easy and it didn’t involve layers of clothes. Not as fun as outside for my oldest boy (and myself), but for the younger ones it was great. Typically they are so loaded down in layers they don’t really get to play in the snow, this was perfect for them….and nice for me!

Christian @ Modobject at Home - Perfect! And, I love the colors. Your boys will remember the snowy, special event.

christina larsen - For the Lego guys it is an instant Ice Planet Hoth. How Fun. I may have to think about that. My son would have a blast. :)

the inadvertent farmer - Oh that is so cool…no pun intended..really! Too bad all we have here is rain. The kids are itching to get out in it but mama wants to stay in by the fire! Great post, Kim

Georgia Davis - What a great idea! My kiddos got to enjoy some Oklahoma snow at Nana’s house too. Gracie loved it and Lyla cried. You can’t win them all. Oh, thought of you yesterday…we went to IKEA!

ashlee - amazing idea!! i am so doing this…next time it snows…most of mine is melted

cassie - As soon as my husband came home for lunch I told him about this post and asked if he would help me lug all of the snow upstairs to the bathroom. My kids loved it and I have just spent the entire nap time sending photos to grandmas and grandpas and posting a blog about it myself. Thanks for the idea. It nudged me from lurker to commenter so I’ll tell you I love everything about your blog!

lea helmerich - what a darling blog. love it!!!!

DIY {‘glitter’ RockBand mic….Carrie Underwood style}

Now I admit this DIY tutorial is more of a joke than for serious purposes, but HEY I figured there are others of you out there that would like to rock it with a bit of glam. We recently became the owners of RockBand and I like to pretend I can sing – which I totally can’t. AND singing is more fun when the mic has a bit of sparkle. The boys think it is funny and “gross”. The bigger deal they make out of it only encourages me more – one day they’ll figure that out. So here’s to you Carrie!

My inspiration:

carrieunderwood_acm2008

Step 1: Cut your fabric to size. I didn’t use actual measurements…

Step 2: Sew the long edges together

Step 3: Put it on your arm and rock it 80s style

12.09mic-02

Step 4: Sew down one of the shorter edges. Probably better to use matching thread, but I didn’t have any on hand.

Step 5: Measure how long it needs to be to overlap with velcro

Step 6: Sew down the other edge (don’t judge my master sewing skills)

12.09mic-05

Step 7: Take a break and laugh at your son trying to teach his baby sister how to sing in the mic. There is about a foot clearance between her crib and the sewing machine.

12.09mic-08

Step 8: Sew down a strip of velcro on the under side

Step 9: Sew down the opposite velcro on the top side. This piece will be sewn on a bit diagonally if the mic is wider at the top and narrow at bottom

Step 10: Make sure it all fits together

12.09mic-1012.09mic-12

You can tell by the coloring of the pictures that this tutorial didn’t just happen in 5 mintues (though it should have). I got about 1 step done at a time over 3 days…hence the daylight and night flash pictures. Oh the joys of creating with 4 kids in the mix! And there you go…a glam RockBand mic cover.

An Okie Blizzard {short fun}

Green Country (the area of the state I live in) was under a blizzard warning on Christmas Eve…the 3rd blizzard warning in recorded state history. All that wind and snow meant we’d have to dig out winter garb to go outside. I used to like the snow, but now trying to get so many little kids bundled up only to have them last a few minutes outside – well, it just doesn’t seem worth it. I might like it again when they can dress themselves. We’ll see. Nonetheless, we had our snow and our fun 10 minutes (then the tears started from snow in the face). Now it can melt and not come back until next winter. I miss you summer.
12.09snow-02

Once dressed he couldn’t move and just fell backwards….all the padding kept him from hurting himself.12.09snow-04

See…he kind of thought it was funny.12.09snow-03

I know it looks like the greatest day…a white Christmas. However, the fun was so short lived and we had chicken tacos at home instead of turkey at Nana’s. Are you tired of me complaining? I’ll stop now. They do look pretty cute in that beautiful snow.12.09snow-05b12.09snow-06

I understand. I understand. Let’s go in. You can have some hot chocolate and I’ll have a caramel latte.12.09snow-08

Oh, so you like it now that you realize you can eat it? I love you.12.09snow-09

Here’s some marshmallows…and a side of hot chocolate.12.09snow-10

Then a few days later it warmed up a bit and I admit to having nearly 30 minutes of fun outside with only one little boy crying due to snow in his face. I won major “coolest mom” ever points with the older boys when I single handedly built a rather large snow fort. My body will be paying me back in the days to come.

12.09xmas2-0412.09xmas2-02I was ready to get the house back to normal and the pretty much dead Christmas tree out the door. I would have just thrown it on the side of the house, but Chris and the boys had other plans.

Alba - my kids would love to have tones of snow around the house. We just had a really wet xmas. But I do understand you, laundy staff is boring and tyring (since I follow your blog I always have wondered how many washing machines are you doing (i don’t know the exact word for it) every single day? we are only four, and it really annoys me).

Shannon Phillips - So fun. When the snow started falling I thought to myself “Oooo, I can’t wait to see Ashley Ann’s photos of her kids playing in the snow.” Thanks for always giving us blog readers something beautiful to look forward to. ;) We don’t mind the complaining.

Carissa - This is cracking me up because I just posted something similar on my blog about the incredible amount of time it took to bundle my kids up in their millions of layers of clothes to take them sledding. I said the same thing….I AM READY FOR SUMMER. Swimsuits are so much easier!

Trina - tee hee … try living in Canada

christina larsen - I enjoyed my white Christmas, but am seriously ready for all of it to be gone; and wait, did you hear? More snow today!!! Ugh! :)

susie whyte - break out some large mixing bowls or rubbermaids, pile the snow in and dump it in your bath tub. we use to do that when we were little. great photo fun.

Anna Marie - Seriously…I strongly dislike having this much snow. We live in Missouri and haven’t had this much snow before Christmas in a long, long time. My husband and I agree that if we ever move it will be south. Even 45 minutes north of us gets a ton more snow and ice.

Lisa Johnson - I love the snow in the bathtub idea! I wish I had thought of that when I had a houseful of little ones. I totally feel your pain. I always felt guilty for my inner groaning, but snow can be a serious pain when you have lots of little ones. All that effort for such a tiny amount of joy.
I love the bathing suit picture. I had one year when my kids were 5 and under when no one wore anything except bathing suits for the entire summer. It was great because I could fit 5 kids worth of clothes in one drawer and almost no laundry. I love to read your blog! It brings back sweet memories. I just wish I could go back in time and do it with as much style as you do!

Lesley - This post makes me think of the country song, “Some Beach.” And, I love the snowman!!!

Shanalea - I must admit I am a Cali girl now and love the snow when I can go and visit it. If it is in the 50s I am freezing and pull out the heavy coat. Yes, I am a wimp when it comes to being cold.

chantelle - love your blog…..we are from snowy Canada (prairies, snow from november till march or april! ug!) and I can top your getting 3 toddlers ready with many tales of 20-30 kindergartens to get dressed 4 times a day! ahhh-even though I am on mat leave right your stories ring close to home! It gets better when they can get themselves ready, you are right!
…..I like to use the “Santa only visits those who can do up their own coats…in moments of desperation!
Your stories are great and ideas the most creative I have come across in along time! I must add you tomy lis tof favs right now!!!!!!!
Sassy

Ashley C - I love that Christmas tree in the snowy yard…my mom would put ours on the porch until it just couldn’t go any longer…she was cool like that too!

Amanda Mc - I love the pic of littlest brother falling over from all the clothes! Hahahaha!! It reminded me of the little brother on the movie “The Christmas Story”.

bopha - looks like hudson passed the old lightning mcqueen boots down to rett, can’t get rid of them, can you :)

the inadvertent farmer - Hubby and I spent last night…after our first snowfall of the year…on the internet looking for places to live in Hawaii when we retire, I kids you not.

I am soooooooooooo with you on loving summer! Kim

Darcy - Fantastic photos and good fun with your boys – as usual, even when you don’t like snow. You’re such an inspiration. Someday I wanna travel down to OK and take one of your classes. I just did my first senior photo shoot – for free of course! :) I’ve been learning more from the settings you label your photos with. If you have time, please stop by and tell me what you think. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and adorable family!

becky - I thought I didn’t miss the snow until we just got to play in it for the first time in the 8 years I’ve been living in California. Just drove back home – snowing in Oklahoma to 68 in Cali. I actually miss the snow!

Christmas 2009

Well we sure had our white Christmas. The snow and ice were fun for about 5 minutes.  The large amounts of time together as a family made up for the craziness outside. If you are wondering about all the mattresses in the living room…well every Christmas Eve Eve we all sleep under the Christmas tree (got that idea from our friend Mary). The boys basically wrestle all night. I am pretty sure Christmas Eve Eve living room wrestling matches will be a big part of their childhood Christmas memories.

Here’s a few peeks at our Christmas (no crazy ice will keep my dad from grilling the Christmas ham):

12.09xmas

I do want to point out one of Baby Sister’s Christmas presents. 3 of her cousins (girls 9, 11, 11) worked together to make her this hat. So thoughtful of them and I am pretty impressed by it. Thanks girls!

12.09xmas-17

On Christmas Eve blizzard conditions hit our state. I left my parent’s and headed home with the kids. Chris headed to the church for our Christmas Eve service. After the service ended he called to say he was headed home. At this point it was dark out, windy and snowing hard. About 5 minutes later he called to say he slid off the road, was stuck and the tow company said due to the weather it would be at least 8 hours before they could help him. (Both of our cars decided to stop working last week, he was in my grandparent’s SUV and I was left without a way to get to him). Did I mention this was Christmas Eve? He hung up in order to save his phone battery and I gathered the boys. We prayed and asked God for someone to be kind enough to stop and help daddy get home. Fifteen minutes later the phone rang again. “Jim” saw Chris stranded, pulled his truck over, unwrapped a brand new tow cable and helped Chris get back on the road. I told the boys what happened and Biggest Brother exclaimed, “God answered our prayer! He sent an angel named Jim!” So to Jim and his family – thank you for getting out in a blizzard to help my guy get home. Thanks for being a little late to celebrate the evening with your family, so that my family could be together. Thank you Jim.

Shannon Phillips - I am so glad that you were able to be together on Christmas eve. What an amazing God we have. I love your sweet 16 Christmas photos. I did the same exact thing for tomorrows post with the circles! Tell your Dad that I would love some of that ham. :)

Brooke - Just wanted to say thank you for the comment on my blog, and your children are precious! I love little sister’s hat! What a wonderful gift. So glad to know you were all safe and able to be together Christmas Eve!

christina larsen - What a wonderful story. We slid all the way home on Christmas eve, too. Was wanting a white Christmas, not an icy Christmas.

Emily - So glad to hear how God took care of Chris & got him home safely! I love your Christmas collage, and Baby Sister’s hat is just precious!! Her cousins did such a great job!

Kate - Yeah, Jim!

amanda torres - Love the mattress idea, and your Christmas Eve miracle!

Steph - Very sweet! Last year Utah was hit with a huge storm on Christmas Day. As nice as it is to have a white Christmas it sure makes traveling anywhere a complete nightmare!
I’m so glad your hubby made it home quickly & safely!
It looks like you & your family had a wonderful Christmas.

Georgia - I just want to tell you how much I enjoy your blog. I check it every few days if not daily, and it is a little treat for my day. You have a craft project which I love seeing or a great story and/or pictures about your precious children. Thanks for taking the time to share your life.

Georgia - PS We had a Christmas Eve miracle, too. We left that morning to drive to my parents’ house in West Texas. Four hours later we were back home after a round trip to Oklahoma City. (the first miracle, we were so thankful to make it home safely) We weren’t going to be able to pick up our dog until Saturday because the vet had closed at noon, 1 hour before we got back. But since we drive right by there, I decided to try. It was dark, no one visible but I knocked on the door anyway. Josie’s sweet vet, Dr. Hooley poked his head out of the other door, and let me in to get our mutt. He had come up that moment to check the doors before leaving for the day. I know it seems dumb to want your dog at home, but it meant so much to us and just a little “hug” from the heavenly Father.

Lisa - Wow, I have goosebumps. Thank heaven for Jim!!! What a scary 15 minutes you must have had, but everything turned out ok :-)

ashlee - Isn’t God so good!!!

Charla Lane - I was @ the Christmas Gathering and have been following your blog. You take the most extraordinary pictures. I was especially excited to see your pirate patches, then noticed the Christmas pic with the pirate hat and patch, I have two boys they are both into pirates, one is having a pirate b-day and I wanted to know where you got the hat it is EXTRA cute.

the homies 2009

So I was checking out Meg’s blog and saw she was nominated for a “homies” award on Apartment Therapy.  I headed over to Apartment Therapy to cast a vote for her. While I was looking over the other blogs listed in the Kids at Home category…what to my wandering eyes should appear? My blog listed as a nominee! I actually doubled clicked on it just to see if it was in fact my blog and not another Ashley Ann Photography (there are others out there). My blog has never been nominated for anything, so THANK YOU to those of you that listed me as one of your favorites. As the site says, it isn’t so much a competition as it is a celebration of great blogs. I don’t really know how the favorite voting and top nominee voting works, but I’m really just so excited that some of you thought of me. Thanks…it was a really fun surprise on a cold, stuck in the house day!

homies

There are some really great blogs listed in every category. I didn’t get very far down the lists, but maybe I can visit more later.

I’ll be back Monday with some Christmas pictures.

Jennifer B. - I added you as my favorite, and will vote for you on Wednesday. Love your blog!

Merry Christmas {our cards}

A highlight of my day during December is checking the mailbox for Christmas cards. I love that so many people are doing cards with photographs on them. It is always so fun to see how families grow and change. We put all the cards on our living room chalkboard. Yes, there are only 3 stockings (mine & Chris’ are on the fireplace). Every time I found one for Baby Sister (online), it would end up being sold out.  Inspired by these stockings on MADE, I think I am going to make one out of a sweater and tatting. That won’t happen before Christmas…she won’t know the difference.

12.09cards-02

The chalkboard is full of cards from this year and old pictures from winter’s past…and 4 large SUMMER pictures of my kids. I keep thinking I should replace those shirtless outside pics for something more winterish. However, I am not a fan of winter and those pictures remind me for every dreary, cold winter there is a hot and splashing fun summer.
12.09cards-0312.09cards-05

Chris got a card from Dave Ramsey this year. I added it to our chalkboard it makes me laugh each time I pass it because you know we are so tight with the Ramseys. Oh no! I forgot to send them ours! I am sure they are checking their mailbox daily in anticipation for it to arrive.

12.09random-16

And here’s our card:

12.09cards-01

I thought I was being clever with the globes and strung lights for “Light of the World” (another name for Jesus)…however, several friends didn’t get it and said, “Oh, that’s fun you took pictures with your globes.” I’m not as clever as I think at times!12.09card12.09card2

As I am writing this I noticed “Indiana Jones” is spelled as “Indian Jones”. YIKES! Just checked a real card and it was right there…I must have messed it up when saving it for the web.

Before you pack away or throw away this year’s Christmas cards I thought I’d share a few ways to re-purpose them…

*For photo cards, turn them into a Kid’s Prayer Journal

*Make a Circle Garland from CraftStylish

*Cut apart the cards to use as tags for gifts next year

*Make clothespin magnets or scrap paper magnets to give away next year

I hope you have a wonderful Christmas…see you next week!

Susan - Love the “Light of the World!” Merry Christmas!

Melissa - Merry Christmas Ashley Ann – may your day be filled with laughter and love.
Thanks for the really fun card ideas – I adore your chalkboard, what a great idea to use it for your cards.

Charity - I love the back of your card. Such a fun and creative way to tell about each of your kids. The recipients will love them!

Casey - love the chalkboard over your couch and the way you’ve displayed everything! Also, I really love how you have little snippets about your kids on the card

Rachel - I love your giant chalkboard and how you’ve displayed all of your holiday cards. Have a wonderful Christmas!!

georgia davis - No worries, my card said Happy Holidays 2010! I think it was snapfish error. But, it still made my upset.

Shanalea - I love the light of the world idea…I might just steal it :) We used our cards last year as a prayer journal and the kids really got into it. We will be doing it again.

Luisina - Hi! Mery Christmas too! I love your blog :)

Teresa - I see you got a card from the McKay Family. I have Abigail McKay in my class at Rejoice Christian School in Owasso. Sweet family and mom and dad always take great pictures.

Holly - What a great card! I love all your pictures on the chalkboard. I’m trying to figure out exactly I’m going to do on our wall in our living room, and that’s a great idea! And I’m super impressed that you got an actual card from Dave Ramsey. We got the same one, only it was an e-card. Not quite the same!

Janica - I LOVED the Christmas card photo! Such a fun idea. I was just wondering what you printed them on and where you got them printed. Is that a weird question? Sorry. Love your website; it’s so inspirational and the pics are INCREDIBLE:) Thanks. Merry Christmas

AshleyAnn - I designed the cards…customizing a template I had. I printed them at White House Custom Color and added the ribbon ties myself.

Trina - LOVE the stockings!! Where are they from??

AshleyAnn - Trina – the cards are from Pottery Barn Kids…over the course of 3 years.

Emily - I LOVE your card – what a great idea!! I also love your ideas of what to do with Christmas cards!

Katie - Where did you get that chalkboard, or did you make it and if you made it how?

AshleyAnn - Katie: We made the chalkboard. I cut a piece of hardboard to size (it runs about $7.00 a board and is near the pegboard at most lumber stores. It is lightweight and thin). Then we cut a groove in some 1×3 boards. I painted the hardboard with chalkboard paint then slid it in the grooves. We nailed and glued it in place. I banged up the wood frame using chains, nails, etc. to make it look old then wiped on a bit of wood stain.

Heather - Hi, I am a new reader, found your blog through ohdeeoh and wanted to know where you got your daughter’s headband in the Christmas card? It is darling! Love your blog.

AshleyAnn - Heather – it is from Lou and Lee on etsy. If you do a search on this blog you can find some links to their site.

Lacey McKay - yay! I see my card up there! How fun! That board is so cute! You are so creative! Can you tell I’m getting caught up on your blog? I keep forgetting that I can’t get it through Google Reader and I figure you just haven’t updated lately! I loved your card too. I didn’t see the light bulbs, but I did get the gist of it!

Sandy - PLEASE tell me where you got that adorable chalkboard. I am so in love with it and the whole idea! You are an inspiration!

Margie - I LOVE this chalkboard! I saw it on Ohdeedoh, which brought me to your blog and I am loving your crafts and photo taking tips! I am inspired to be more crafty and master my new dslr camera, not to mention talking my husband into helping me make the chalkboard!

our happenings

I am gearing up to enjoy a wonderful week with family and I hope you are too. Last year I posted a few tips for present opening pictures (you can read it here).  Part of that post focused on really being IN THE MOMENT with your friends and family. It is so easy for me to spend an entire evening behind the camera capturing it instead of living in it. I’m trying hard to set my camera down this week.

Here are a few glimpses of some of what has been going on around here (no hospitals stays included!):

Christmas Performances

He focused on me the whole time – made my heart smile.12.09random-6

He even looked at me while he picked his nose. That didn’t make my heart smile.12.09random-5

I bought supplies to make gingerbread houses (out of graham crackers). I envisioned 3 cute little houses. The boys were all working on their own and I stepped out of the room. I came back to find that the Teddy Graham Bears looked all crazy. I asked what happened and got this response from the older 2 boys, ” There was a war. Some bears lost their legs. These bears fell on the roof and landed on their heads. This guy stepped on a bomb and lost his arm.” So much for the cute little houses I dreamed of. After all, “there was a war.”12.09random-7

Another Christmas Performance. He was the Angel Gabriel and had a little solo. This is just before he started to sing…he was a little giddy. I realized about 30 minutes before we left the house that he didn’t have any type of “Christmas-y” outfit or clothes. I was WAY BEHIND on laundry and the only non t-shirt he had was the white oxford he wore to school that day. So I figured that was fine…until he ate a green Skittle off his gingerbread house. That tiny little Skittle left a long drool mark all down his white oxford. So, what is a mom to do with a performance starting soon and 4 kids to get ready by herself? Throw a t-shirt over the Skittle covered white oxford – that’s what she does. And when her sister leans over during the performance and says, “Nice Christmas outfit Ashley”. She smiles and says, “I think he looks pretty cute.”12.09random-8

My favorite decoration – Baby Jesus asleep in the hay. Made by Biggest Brother when he was 2.

12.09random-17

He is crazy about her.

12.09random-18

She got some new shoes. You’ll be seeing more of these soon…I am working on some pictures for Gracious May. They are the cutest little things ever.

ashlee - i love gracious may’s shoes…but i cannot settle on a pair:) too many beautiful choices! i am going to try and actually take pictures this year. Im always too in the moment to think about it until its too late. Im the other extreme:) gonna work on that this week!

Christy - Awh love the B&W pix of littlest guy w/baby girl!! Adorable.
Love her gracious may shoes!! Too cute

Erin - Adorable post!! I love the “picking the nose” picture! Great for showing to his girlfriend someday (not any day soon though) ;)

Rachel - I love all of the pics and the story of the gingerbread house. It’s funny how we dream up these beautiful houses and then end up with something not quite as beautiful as we dreamed it would be, but nonetheless, still so special because our kids put so much thought and imagination into it…have a wonderful Christmas!

anne c - ashley! I love keeping up with your family and learning from all of your tips/experiences! thanks for sharing. If the timing is right when you start the new snapshot sessions, I am going to fly from SC to learn as much as possible from you..seriously. I just got a new dslr camera for the sole purpose of capturing my daughters life..knowing that she is going to be an adult before I know it. Now that I have the camera,I need major help and am so excited to learn. Thanks again..and have a VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS!!

Jeannette Swan - Merry Christmas!!! Corban made a “baby Jesus” this year like the one you have – I love it – he insisted that “baby Jesus” stays under the tree, so I got a pic of him placing it there! Love all you notes and pictures.

Cath - Merry Christmas! I rarely comment here but let me tell you I visit your blog everyday, it makes me smile :) I wish someday when I’ve kids to do all the cool stuff you do with them (and I’m only 18 xD). Your photos make my heart melt everytime.

Kara - “being in the moment”…I’m still working on that! Sometimes I remedy by NOT taking my camera. Well, truthfully, I sneak my point & shoot in my purse, just in case there is a moment I must capture!

Lesley - Super cute post and I love the gingerbread house war! And…he looked awesome in his Okie Grown shirt – I expected nothing less. Merry Christmas :)

robyn - great post! and so true… im often running around trying to capture the moment that i miss it.
what settings did you use to get that shot of the boys doing crafts with the tree lights looking so great in the background?

Kathy Rabago - Love all of these pictures. If you ever have time, I’d love to hear how you capture such clear pictures inside. I have a canon 5d, and all of my indoor pics are orangish, no matter what white balance setting I use. Then I have to crank up the iso and get horribly grainy pics. Anyway–love your pics, so thanks for the peek into your life!

Dianne Avery - I LOVE the “tone” of your pictures. So warm and welcoming, lovely!!

Anna - What a fabulous (and gorgeous!) series of photos. Lovely.

All I want for Christmas…is to be out of the hospital!

Photos taken with an iPhone and P&S camera:

We started off our Christmas Break with a little hospital stay…Littlest Brother had to have a minor surgery. Waking up from general anesthesia he was IRRATE. Throwing stuffed animals and screaming – not fun. Can I just say I love doctors and nurses, but I hate hospitals. I hated seeing him in that little gown and hooked up to stuff. Hated it. It’s over. I’m grateful for a strong, healthy boy.

12.09hospital-10Our room in the Children’s Hospital was big and sunny and nice. But I still hate hospitals. Little guy here hated his IV and oxygen monitor. He kept trying to rip it out and would cry “All done. All done.” I love nurses and doctors. I hate hospitals.

The big boys stayed with Nana. Baby sister stayed in a hospital drawer. I’m not kidding.

12.09hospital-02

I can add this to the list of random places my children have slept. During the course of our stay a sweet family came to visit all the kids at the hospital…bearing Christmas gifts. They were so kind and engaging to Littlest Brother. I was embarrassed when they looked over and saw my daughter sleeping in a drawer. Oh well, you do what you gotta do to get kids to sleep – at least Chris and I do.

12.09hospital-03

Our gloomy, grumpy, sad little boy transformed when his big brothers came to visit. He was sitting on the couch eating ice when they walked through the door. He climbed down, ran to Biggest Brother, threw his arms around him in a big hug and wouldn’t let go. Eventually he let go and started running around the room and trying to wrestle with them. Here he is trying to do a somersault with Biggest Brother. It was an incredible moment to see the change in him that his big brothers caused. Nothing like it. 12.09hospital-04

Thank you to all our friends and family who prayed for us and checked in on us during our short stay at the hospital. We are so grateful.

Alba - Dear Ashley, I’m really sorry to hear about it, and I’m glad you are back home. Hospitals only have a good good place, maternity.
A drawer? Well, it’s an option ;-) I totally agree about do anything for make them to sleep.
Take care. Petonets, Alba

Kari Sanchez - Bless your hearts! I’m glad everyone is doing well! Merry Christmas Ashley! Thanks for all you, for all the blog posts- they are so encouraging, so inspirational! God has blessed you with many, many talents!

Ryan - I’m so glad he’s doing well and the surgery went smoothly. That had to be pretty stressful for you and Chris.

Don’t feel bad about putting her in a drawer – it was open afterall. When we were about your boys’ ages, my brother and I would sleep standing up behind the front seat in my Mom’s El Camino. There was like a 8″ opening between the seat and the wall. Imagine explaining that if she had gotten pulled over.

alamama - I am so glad he is doing better now! My heart goes out to you!

ashlee - glad all is well with him now. i think sleeping in the drawer is pretty ingenius and resourceful!

Christina - Glad he is ok. My daughter had her tonsils out when she was 7 over Christmas break, so I can relate to the “sick” kid over the holidays. Hope he is bouncing and back to normal by the big day.

Erin - Glad that Littlest Bro is doing better, he’s too cute to be down. And think of the drawer as more of a “trundle bed” of sorts..

Lauren Roberts - Glad your back home! I think little girl’s bed was totally appropriate. She didn’t seem to mind:) We will continue to pray for littlest brother to have a speedy recovery.

meg duerksen - you will love having photos of this someday….memories captured forever. so glad he’s okay.

Jaimie - So sorry to hear about the surgery and the hospital. yuck. But, I can’t stop laughing about the drawer- she can’t get out yet, it’s okay!

Stephanie May* - Haha – LOVE the drawer bed! Reminds me of a Seinfeld episode :)

lorae - Yuck on the hospital visit! Awesome on the drawer! Had to use a large suitcase once, unzipped of course. Best wishes for a speedy recovery and enjoy your holidays with your sweet family!

Jeannette Swan - I’m so glad he is feeling better and you didn’t have to stay the night. Praying for a super quick recovery and blessed Christmas for all!!

Lisa - LOVE that you put your daughter in the drawer! :) Hope that Littlest Brother feels better soon!

Liz Pray - So glad to know he is home! I remember Cairo waking up from his anisthesia irrate…it was aweful and we had to do it 3 more times! He also had horrific gas (HEE, HEE)!

Lisa - Glad to hear he is doing well! Hospitals are a stressful and scary place. Sending big hugs your way!

Kara - I’ve heard the drawer idea before! My mom said she used to do that with me and my brother.

Cheree - My cousin slept in a drawer the first few months of his life…

PamperingBeki - Awww, sweet baby.

Home will feel better than ever before!

Kate - Praying for a speedy recovery for you guys! Merry Christmas.

maegan - I know exactly how you feel. So glad y’all are back home. And the drawer is totally appropriate.

rachel denbow - oh, I do hope he has a quick recovery. That shot of Breese’s foot sticking out of the drawer is the best!

Sophie - I’m so glad you littlest man is all better and back home now.
And even if it is slightly unusual, the baby sister does look ADORABLE, even in a drawer.

I hope you all have a very merry Christmas
Sophie
xx

Liz - I am so glad he is doing better. We spent two weeks at that hospital including Thanksgiving day when my daughter Allison was sick. It really is a wonderful place and they have the best nurses! We have to go back in Janurary for her to have surgery and I know that they will take good care of our family!

Ny nother-in-law is one of 12 kids and they all slept in dresser drawers when they were babies because they could not afford cribs. Once she was babysitting the girls when they were little and when we came to get them she had them tied to barstools with dish towels because she didn’t have high chairs. No that was one I hadn’t seen before. We bought her a highchair to keep at her house after that! Now they are 5 and 7 but I always think about that and laugh!

Harper {just over a week}

Remember about a week ago when I posted that I just got done capturing a little one enter the world? Well here she is! Meet little Harper. She is about 5 1/2 lbs small…TINY little bean. Cute as all get out – just like her big sister. It was my special treat to myself to get out of my wild and crazy house and go visit her. I love her.  Big Brother (my 3 year old) has been asking daily to see Baby Harper. He recently told me, “Baby Harper doesn’t have hands.” After a few questions I realized he had never seen her out of her swaddle blanket and in fact believed she didn’t have hands! Kids are so fun.
