DIY {picture frame tray}

I realized a lot of my DIY stuff so far as been kid related, so here is one not for kids! When I am working, I usually sit on the couch and pull up an end table to sit my computer on. The problem with this set up is there is no place for my tea and snacks. So to solve that problem I made a tray from an old picture frame. I have customized store bought trays before by adding pictures with Modge Podge….but I like to change things all the time, so that was a problem. With this tray I can change the inside out with fabric, pictures, notes, you name it! The frame is the kind that is glass on both sides, typically people put certificates in them. Once I picked the frame, I picked what I wanted inside - a vintage kitchen towel that was my grandma’s and one of her recipe cards. She passed away a couple of months ago, so it is a fun reminder of her and the times we spent in the kitchen together. I then bought two drawer handles, drilled holes in the frame, then attached the handles. Since I am using mine as a tray to sit on soft surfaces it didn’t matter if the under side was smooth….keep that in mind in you plan to use yours on a hard surface.

This Weekend {local events}

There’s a lot going on in the Greater Tulsa Area this weekend, so I thought I’d list a few of our favorites:

#1 Bluebell Taste of Summer

#2 Bixby Green Corn Festival

#3 Woolaroc KidsFest 2008

Taste of Summer is only on Saturday and it is a yearly tradition for our family….all you can eat BlueBell ice cream! Really, who can pass that up? The other two take place all weekend. Click on the links to find out more info on each of them.

Cairo {14 months}

It is crazy to me that Cairo is already one, it really doesn’t seem that long ago that we found out he was coming. We have been friends with his parents since high school and had our first babies 2 weeks apart. Their #3 is on the way, but this time they will be experiencing a baby girl…so our roads diverge a bit! Love them….

Happy Birthday Chris {& day 1 vacation}

My incredible husband is celebrating his birthday today. I am so grateful for the years I have been blessed to walk beside him in this life. As a mom I pray, hope, and dream that my boys will grow up to be men like their father. He is the perfect combination of strength and tenderness…he is my best friend. Happy Birthday Babe! (If you know him…or even if you don’t…leave him a birthday comment!)

Well there are bagillion (is that really a word?) pictures to share from our mini vacation, so today I’ll start with day 1. Chris and I both took a couple of days off work to enjoy our family. We stayed home and tried to do all the things we usually don’t make time to do around here. Day one started with a family trip to the splash park, then a picnic, naps, bowling, dinner at Chilis, snowcones at home….

My boys never lack in expressions

“I am two and I have pouting down. I wanted to carry that ball.”

I love both of these. I know they are very similar, but I couldn’t decide which one to post. I like pictures that tell a story and help me remember things. Here it is that Hudson was too small to fit in any of the shoes, so he had to wear his tiny flip flops.

Everett was with us all weekend…you can see him in the background of some of the other pictures. Here he is at Chili’s. Like I said, my boys are great at expressions!

The Urbans {family session}

I have been looking forward to this session since we booked it a while back. Check out how cute (& handsome) these kids are! This was my first family session with so many kids and they were incredibly polite, well behaved and full of life. It was fun to listen to what they enjoyed and great to see them interact as a family. Just all around a great family…

I love these next two…they are such a picture of tender parenting to me…

As the oldest, I gotta admit I am drawn a bit to the oldest kid in a family. Right from the start of the session I could tell this young man was a great big brother

Studio News: If any of you that saved dates for fall family pictures would like to do it in the next couple of months instead of the fall, please email me. I can work some dates for that. For current baby clients I will open up calendar dates for your baby, there has been some confusion on that since I posted I am not taking new clients. With that said, I do have a few openings for new client baby sessions (that means birth-6months indoor session during mid-day). Email me if you are interested. First to email, gets the space.

Summer Salad Recipes

I love to eat and I love to cook. Unfortunately with the summer heat I find it hard to want cook anything in the kitchen because it heats up the house. As an alternative to cooking indoors, we really enjoy grilling but sometimes we just don’t have the time and need something quick. That’s where dinner salads come in, they’re quick, the options are endless and you can eat as much as you want because it’s good for you! And this time of year is perfect for salads because you can find some great, fresh produce at your local farmers market. So I’ve decided to share one of my favorite dinner salad recipes as well as one of my favorite side salad recipes.

Making of a Salad 2 - 12/365

Quick Summer Salad

Grocery List:

  • 4 chicken breasts
  • mexican seasoning
  • salad dressing, I recommend Asiago cheese dressing
  • 1 head green leaf lettuce, leaves halved down the middle then sliced
  • 4 hard boiled eggs, sliced
  • 1/3 purple onion, diced
  • 1/2 red bell pepper, diced
  • 2 carrots, grated
  • 1/2 cup edamame (soy beans)
  • 1 cup corn kernels

First, season the chicken fairly well with a dry rub and let it sit for about 5 minutes. This gives the chicken time to soak in the flavor as well as reach room temp so it will cook evenly throughout. Start the George Forman grill as well the water for the eggs. While the eggs are boiling, rinse and chop all the ingredients and set them aside. After the grill has thoroughly heated, place each breast side-by-side to cook, turning once. Meanwhile, layer all the other ingredients in a large salad bowl. After the chicken is cooked throughout, remove it from the grill and let it sit for about 10 minutes. Then slice each breast and place the the strips on top of the salad and toss!

Cleanup is a cinch, the kitchen stayed cool and healthy meal was made in no time giving you time to enjoy summer!

Extra Steps for Extra Flavor:

  • grill the chicken on a charcoal grill
  • get the veggies at your local Farmer’s Market (not only is it good for your local community, but they taste better, are fresher and have no added chemicals!)
  • make each person’s plate by arranging the sliced chicken next to a generous helping of salad
  • create your own seasoning rub for the chicken

Making of a Salad - 6/365

Side Strawberry-Feta Salad

Here’s a recipe for a quick side salad that’s great with a grilled steak dinner:

Grocery List:

  • 1 head green leaf lettuce, leaves halved and sliced
  • poppy seed vinaigrette dressing
  • 1/2 lb. strawberries, sliced
  • 1 bunch green onions, halved lengthwise then sliced
  • 1 sm package feta cheese,
  • 1 avocado, halved and sliced

Just put the lettuce in a large salad bowl and sprinkle the rest of the ingredients on top. Serve with salad dressing.

Free Ice Cream!

Well, Ashley Ann is on vacation and asked me to guest blog for her. I decided I’d start the first post with something everyone can scream about: Free Ice Cream! For those of you who have read my blog, you know I’m all about free stuff so when I got this card in the mail I was excited to share the news. The Braum’s located at 1415 S. Lewis is having a Grand Opening celebration. Tomorrow from 1pm-6pm they will be giving away free cones for kids (ages 15 and under). So get out of the house and treat your kids to a free treat.

On Vacation {friday - monday}

Just a note to say I will be on vacation with my family Friday - Monday. All emails will be returned on Tuesday. If you have an order to pick up we can arrange a Tuesday pick up. I asked my sis Lesley to guest blog for me tomorrow (Friday) and Monday, so check back in to see what she comes up with….and leave her some blog luvin’!

Gianna {6 months}

Well she wins for traveling the greatest distance to have her picture taken….all the way from Costa Rica meet little Gianna. I love those cheeks and fauxhawk! She’s in town visiting family and squeezed in a little photo session. I will always remember processing her pictures…as I worked Everett was sitting next to me squealing and squirming. In between saving images I started to distract him by singing The Ants Go Marching Two by Two (I know totally random song, not sure where I came up with that - maybe all the rain). When I got to the chorus he started laughing! Yeah! All you parents know how incredible that first laugh is. Chris got Corbett and Hudson to laugh for the first time, so this was my turn. I can’t stop smiling. I LOVE BEING A MOM!!!
